Nuvi 3590 Route Calcuations have slowed down to a crawl

I have a Nuvi 3590LMT and recently, when having it calculate a route (and recalculations), the unit has slowed down to a crawl. What used to take 10-15 seconds to calculate a route, now takes about 3 mins. and recalculations are worthless because I have to wait so long for them that I'd have to pull over and stop to let it catch up. If this happened right after a software update or map update, it would be a no-brainer. And though I did recently update my map, the problem persisted. Anyone having a problem with this and even better, any solutions?

A few thoughts

Your owners manual:

One thought is to disable trafficTrends (p66 of manual) and see if that improves things.

Another is to delete you trip log (p26,68) and see what happens. Ditto for Travel History (p68); myTrends (p23); etc.

Finally, if none of the above help, try a hard reset:

Good luck and let us know what worked for you.

Mine is OK

My 3590 has not been having any problems calculating/recalculating trips. I would try CraigW's recommendations......he is a reliable source of information. I keep my unit pretty clean of old trip data.

3590 slow calculations

Have you added a micro-sd card lately?

I have experienced slower everything on occasion on my units if I install a card.

The newer the model, the slower the speed and the more complaints on AMZN.

.

As CraigW mentioned, a hard reset should be in order if other settings he mentions do not work. The hard reset is know to cure many oddities and is always my first step after a firmware or map update. True, you have to re-enter your units preferences, but after you've done it a few times, redoing the settings become second nature and can be done in a minute or two.

Possably a memory problem?

I haven't run into any speed problems while it was running but I did run into something which may be related.
When I tried to install the maps, it was having trouble downloading it from the server. After 3 1/2 hours I gave up and quit. When I tried to do it again a couple of days later the download went fast (less than 20 minutes) but when it tried to install the maps it said there was not enough room in the onboard memory and it asked if I wanted to install it on the SD card. Since I knew this was unlikely with the amount of memory it has I quit again and looked at it with my computer. I still had about 2.5gb free. I tried again and it worked fine that time. I wonder if the memory fills up with buffers or something and it needed to clear it which may have happened when I accessed the memory from the computer.

I have the same GPS and even

I have the same GPS and even calculating a 700+ mile route only takes seconds on mine. Maybe it's time to contact Garmin.

Clear Travel History

On my 3590 calculation time on one of my routes went from 35 seconds to 3 seconds after clearing travel history.

Guess when you have a lot of travel history it has to go through it all and that causes the extra calculation time.

From the 26xx users--

26xx series folks also suffered through this -- one of the culprits was EcoRoute, which seemed to snarl things up. Yes, deleting history helps as well.

Turn off all the fancy features and see how things run -- enable them one at a time until you find the culprit.

And then let us know about it, to help others avoid the same traps and pain!

same issues as the OP on two devices

I'll be following this thread closely. I've had the same issues as the OP with two 3590LMT's. This was the same exact issue that I sent my original device back for. And the same issue I'm slowly starting to re-experience now with the replacement 3590LMT.

Both devices were brand new, NOT refurbs.
Both devices were updated with the latest Firmware and Maps.
Both devices had an empty SD card installed

Im going to try Traffic Trends first - then proceed down CraigW's list - One by one, in an attempt to find the underlying culprit.
(I should be able to post the first trip report Thur. or Fri. after a full 24Hr shift that starts on Wed. night?

Also, my unit is on for long periods of time with sustained heavy duty commercial use.
Whatever is the underlying cause also seems to effect my Voice Command negatively?
In my personal experience, turning the device off completely, then restarting cold, seems to help a little?

Hard Reset does solve the problem until the underlying setting / cache / issue arises again.

There is so much more i would like to post. But, I am dead tired and require sleep.

Disable the Traffic Trend

Disable the Traffic Trend will cure the problem.

Mine Nuvi 3490 have the same problem whenever I turn on the Traffic Trend.

Disabling trafficTrends did not work

trafficTrends didn't seem to be the culprit on my 3590LMT.

Going with step #2: And disabling Travel History for shift 2 of this experiment?
If Travel History does not work? Step 3 will be removal of the empty SD card?

Do a hard reset

I had this happen twice in the last year on my 3790. A hard rest fixed this problem each time.

I had the same problem with S-L-O-W route calculations. It went away when I unchecked Traffic Trends and Avoid Traffic. You can still elect to avoid traffic manually when you need to.

Disabling Travel History seemed to work for me.

After a few shifts of heavy duty use.
Kinks have been worked out since disabling Travel History. The device has been working to expectations.

Soon enough I'll do a hard reset on the 3590. After, I'll post the the results.

Just did a Hard Reset

For my ongoing experiment on my 3590LMT.

Just did a Hard Reset. Didn't want to do this, as I'm going to lose a lot of the data that I paid the BigBucks for this unit to save for me.
Unfortunately the unit had slowed down so much as to be unusable for commercial use.

I only disabled Travel History (p68) after the Hard Reset.

Hopefully I can keep the data, and the other options while using the unit going forward.

Before you did the "master reset", you should have made a backup. Then you could have just moved the data (like Favorites) back to the unit.

Just wondering what you lost and why.

Nuvi 3590LMT fixed slow response

I had a great deal of trouble with speed and other issues. Deleting my travel history and cleaning up no longer needed favorites along with transfers that I made from basecamp and google maps really helped.

Resetting Travel History Worked for Me

When my unit gets slow recalcing I reset the Travel History. So far has worked every time.

m thinking of buying a 3590.

m thinking of buying a 3590. Is this issue specific to the 3590, or all nuvi's? (Have never had a unit, this will be my first)

Trends

The issue seems to be with the Trends features. They try to predict better routes based on your driving habits and time of day. The more you drive, the more data has to get analyzed.

There was a firmware update a while back that was supposed to help with the speed and I must say that I haven't noticed any appreciable slow down in calculation speed since that update, but I will admit that I am not a heavy GPS user.

For people that choose to turn off the trending, the slow down issue never happened.
