Garmin Nuvi 350 Disable Auto Zoom Feature

Now that my replacement Garmin Nuvi 350 is here, I have been spending some time configuring it how I like it. I did notice this morning that the Auto Zoom is on and it looks like there is no longer a way to disable it from the unit currently.
I have read through http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/index.html and previous posts here. Am I correct in assuming that I have two ways to disable Auto Zoom? Either:
-Do a hard re-set and select a non-North American region, or
-Select different firmware for the 350?
Does either method work equally well? I do seem to recall that the speed limits under a European selection will display with circles rather than rectangles. Are there any other unintended features that I would get using that method? Would a US firmware choice be a better decision? I also seem tor recall reading that a European re-boot shows the road being traveled on rather than the upcoming street while navigating. What other changes might there be?

Not sure if it's an option,
Not sure if it's an option, but it's designed to make it easier by zooming in automatically as an exit/turn comes up rather than pressing the zoom in button while driving.

How did you get your prior 350 GPS replaced by Garmin?
How did you get your prior 350 GPS replaced by Garmin? As I recall that unit was discontinued over 4 years ago.

Garmin Nuvi 350 Disable Auto Zoom Feature
I bought it second hand earlier this year, but apparently the previous owner never registered the Nuvi 350. I did register the unit and I was able to upgrade the map to City Navigator NA 2013.1. More recently I noticed that the battery would only operate the unit for 20 minutes after being fully charged. I contacted Garmin and they told me that for just short of $50 they would give me a refurbished unit. Since I like the NMEA-0183 out feature, it was a fairly easy decision for me.
