Can you change the posted speed for a short distance on a major highway?

No

No, it's hard coded.

Speed limit updates

Not sure about that. Just got mine a couple of days ago. Been playing with it today. None of the roads in the county I live in have had speed limits before. Noticed the "+" sign on the drive to work and was able to set the speed limit for the road. I think that is a great feature. Not sure what it uses for distance though. I will try to remember to play with it on the way in to work tomorrow. (only if I can insure the safety of myself and fellow drivers). I did note that I could select an existing speed limit and change it. Just didn't check how long it would stay before it changed.

Posted speed

Thanks, some of the small towns keeps moving the slower speeds futher out of the main town.

Speed limit test

Last night I had the 2360 simulate the route from home to work and changed some of the speed limits (the ones that were already there and the ones I added for roads that did not have limits shown).

When I drove to work this morning the speed limits I entered were still there. The unit defaulted back to the posted speed limit when I drove by a speed limit sign so I can only assume that either the speed limit sign puts out a signal the nuvi picks up or there is a little camera in the nuvi that reads the sign (which is really impressive since it was sitting in a cup holder). Anyway.... Actually it was the second speed limit sign I drove by, but the first one is only about 6 months old.

I just wonder if the limits will get reset when a new map gets uploaded. That and how they fit the speed limit sign camera in that little case.

Posted Speed Limit

Hope to see them adjust the posted speed limit on the new maps. Does anyone know where garmin gets their information when the posted speed limit is changed?

I can edit and override the posted limits

I have not had a problem correcting the preloaded limits to account for local construction zones, but I will purposely test and report back.

Where Posted Speed Limit Information Comes From

I could not find a website which reveals the current posted speed limits for any particular location. However, I did find the Florida Department of Transportation's "Speed Zoning Manual". This manual reveals who sets speed limits and how speed limts are determined.
http://www.dot.state.fl.us/trafficoperations/pdf/Speed%20Zon...)

On page 43 of the manual, there is a sample of the form city, county, and state traffic engineers use to record speed limits on various streets, roads, and highways. Such a form would show the street, road, or highway name (number), speed limit, where a particular speed limit begins, where it ends, and numerous other details. Locations are denoted down to the thousandth of a mile (within 5.2 feet)!

I would not expect every jurisdiction to vouluntarily or promptly report each and every change in a posted speed limit immediately to Garmin, Magellan, TomTom, Navteq, etc. However, since these are public records, I would assume that Garmin can get these records from various jurisdictions by request.

After viewing the sample form for just one strech of road, it is clear that, even if the system is automated to a large extent, getting this information and putting it into useful form for our GPS units would be a difficult and time consuming task.

I can't tell if you're joking or actually being serious.

The speed limits are coded into the maps. The speed limit signs do not put out a signal and the nuvi does not have a little camera that reads the signs.

I have had no problem

I have had no problem changing speed limits on major highways. I added several for construction on our PA turnpike.

@ Those Who Are Changing Speed Limits

What GPS brands and models are you using? What is the process you are using to make the changes?

Not supported on zumo 660

I don't see that changing the speed limit is supported on the zumo 660 or nuvi 765T models. It did not work tapping the speed limit sign when I tried it a little while ago while I was out. Oh well.

Alerts or what shows on screen?

Am asking the question because some have interpreted your statement to mean that you are able to "edit" the Garmin file to alter the speed limits between point A and point B.

I had not heard of this feature before.

I did a bit of research/reading and according to Rich Owings at GpsTrackLog: “No, you can’t change the legal speed limit, but if your GPS has it wrong, you can now fix it. This is a new feature on the Garmin nuvi 2xxx series. Simply tap the speed limit icon...” and it will take you to a screen where you can adjust the limit up or down.

See http://gpstracklog.com/2011/01/nu-feature-speed-limit-adjust....

I learn something new every day I spend here! wink

Edit: Why is it not on the 37xx series?

Speed Limit Icon

Found this at another place. On the 37xx we might not be able to change the speed limit number but we can sure change the speed limit icon. Example: instead of a U.S. speed limit sign try one from the U.K.

By doing a hard reset selecting United Kingdom the speed icon change, I also noticed a blue banner on the top screen instead of the green. Oh yeah not to forget the option to enable or disable auto zoom. See what else is you can find lol.

Change posted speed

I changed the posted speed on my Garmin 2360 to the correct speed, when I went back down the Hwy the speed reverted back to old posted speed. I will try again over the next few days.
