while we wait for Peewee to tell us the model

Sometimes my wife doesn't respond to touch either, and remains unresponsive until the mall opens.

Refurbished 40

My refurbished 40 sometimes does not respond when I press the right most keys on the keypad.

I did the touch-set and hard reset.

Mine too

My Nuvi 660 died in the same fashion. It becomes intermittant at first but then just dies. There's a guys out there that says he fixes them but he's not taking any futher repairs. Ended up buying a factory refurb 1450 for the same money online and love the thing.

why

wish RLC and speed camera are unresponsive... just a wish...

Easy fix

Had the touch screen go out on my Nuvi 660 about a year or two ago and bought a Nuvi 855 for cheap. Shortly after buying the 855 I found touch screen digitizers for various models on ebay for $10 or $15. Ordered one (from China of course) put it in (not terribly difficult) and it worked great. That sucker still works today. Wish I had ordered a battery at the same time. Worst part is getting the 660 open without wrecking the stupid flip up antenna. You can find all the parts on Ebay and instructions on the web and youtube. It's a $10 crap shoot, but if you are handy with small tools (no soldering required) have at it, nothing to loose if the touch screen is dead anyways.

? Never heard of them! Cool.
Got a link or explaination??
smile

My 295W screen died just before the warranty went out. The battery was great but the replacement battery wouldn't hold a charge so I had to get one off of ebay, and I lost all of my contacts in the process as well. Would have rather fixed mine myself if I could have.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

The display on most GPS's with resistive touch screens usually consists of two parts. One is the LCD panel that displays the map. The other is a plastic or glass sheet (the actual touch sensitive part) sandwiched on top of the LCD screen. This touch panel (or digitizer) can be peeled off and replaced. Seems like the 295W digitizer is more expensive than my 660 was but it should be the same thing pretty much. Put "295w digitizer" into a google search and you should get all kinds of sellers and info. Instructions for a different model here:

They are all quite similar. Proceed carefully especially with the flimsy little connectors inside the unit when pulling stuff apart. Note how everything connects together (take pictures). Some electronics knowledge is helpful but not really a requirement.
Hope this helps.

and had to send the unit back to Garmin a while ago. I got a refurbished unit but never had the problem again.

Thanks for that. I never looked, but never realized these were this common. Makes sense I guess as more and more touch screen devices get popular.

Thanks again!

Yeah I was surprised to find one myself and I was even more surprised how cheap it was. I was ready to throw my 660 in the trash. Glad I did some research first. The internet can be a wonderful thing.
No problem. Good luck keeping your GPS alive and well in the future. I hope this post might nudge others who are a little on the adventurous side when it comes to repairing these things.
