MapSource Vs. BaseCamp

I am still a little bit confused about the whole MapSource Vs. BaseCamp situation. My newest computer has BaseCamp. Is it possible to still get MapSource on it? If so, will it get the newest maps if I use it to update my Garmin Nuvi 500 to 2013.3? Do I have to un-install BaseCamp first?

Mapsource

Mapsource isn't generally used to update the maps. Most users update the maps with MyDashboard on Garmin's website or with lifetime Updater.

There are no problems having Basecamp and Mapsource both on your computer. Many users still prefer using Mapsource. Just go here

to download and install it.

There's no need to uninstall Base Camp first, as Jim said you can have them both, and either can be installed first.

MapSource has no updates so if there are any vulnerabilities found with the old version (unlikely but still possible), they will not be fixed.

That link to Mapsource is only an update, you must have mapsource already installed.

Anyone know where to get a fresh copy? I had to replace my computer a week ago, I liked mapsource, but I think Garmin is now pushing basecamp.

Here are links to two techniques:

1) Install BaseCamp, then install Mapsource; or

2) Install Training Center, then Mapsource, then apply the Mapsource update.

If you have already the map installed on your PC I believe it lets install Mapsource from the update link but I may have already had Basecamp on first. I kind of remember that is the way I did it.

I lost most of my programs due to a computer failure, I was able to retrieve a lot of stuff from my old hard drive but unless I also had the set up program I lost the program, which is the case for mapsource.

new laptop

I have to take back my earlier statement. I have the Mapsopurce_6163.exe file in my download folder. The date on the file makes me now think I might have copied it off my desktop PC.

Sorry about that!

Mapsource Install

Here is a link that suggests you can install Mapsource after installing BaseCamp. If you have Basecamp installed from Garmin's Lifetime Updater you may want to do a re-install. For some reason the Lifetime Updater Basecamp install isn't the same as independently downloading and installing it.
