Extra POI Editor Map vs Satellite

I recently created a custom POI using Extra POI Editor 5.32.

If I find a difference in apparent position of the marker when I switch from Map to Satellite. When create a POI, I generally switch to Satellite mode and zoom in as much as possible. I then drag the marker to the correct position on the road.

However, when I switch back to Map mode, the marker is a fairly decent distance off the road.

I've made POIs in the past using this technique and don't recall such a significant difference.

Is this a new problem? Which is more accurate? The Map or Satellite?

the difference

The difference could well be registration errors between the two. Without being able to reference one of the two to a known point (a benchmark) you don't know how much one differs from the other. One way to check which is closer would be to go to a fixed point such as the middle of an intersection with your GPS and take a reading. Use those coordinates in both the map and satellite view and see where the marker is. Remember your position is guaranteed to be accurate to within 30 meters or so, so you will probably find both are off.

I could not duplicate your problem. I called up several locations in the McDonalds & Walmart files using EPE. Toggling back and forth, the marker did not move more than ten feet or so.

A suggestion

Why not try using Google Earth to get the lat/long. GE works the same way as your technique, but the image is larger and easier to work with.
When I make a custom POI, I use Notepad to create a .csv line/file, then use EPE to convert it to GPX format. GE allows me to move the needle to exactly the position I want then copy/paste the longitude and latitude to the .csv line.

POI's don't have to be perfect

What matters to me when using other peoples POI files is that I'm able to see the target/business from the lat/long quoted, so if it's within 20-30 meters in some cases maybe further, it's not a worry, if you have marked a rest area, so long as I can see it at the coordinates I'm happy. We to need to navigate a bit.

Satellite View Matches Google Earth

I followed your advice and loaded the coordinates from the Satellite positioning in EPE and it was dead on with the position in GE.

I'll trust the satellite view.
