Moving filesn to SDHC

Planning to clean up extra files and move whatever I can to my SDHC card.

I pretty much know which files can be deleted thanks to all the posts and links such as: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=c6483e8a197b8356&sc=documents...

Except there is no mention of folders such as tutorials, tracker, LEX_PKG, audible and probably some more in hidden system files.

Does anyone know which folders can be moved to the SDHC and do not have to be on the Garmin itself. Also when you move the GPX, keyboard, voices etc folders do you delete the folders (not just the files) on the Garmin? I assume you create subfolders under the Garmin folder on the SDHC.......correct? Or do you create same level folders as Garmin on the SDHC? (My POI folder is under the Garmin SDHC folder now).

Thanks

Honestly

Honestly I think your going to a lot of unneeded work with more downside risk than upside good. Your 3590, if your Profile is correct, has plenty of room on it's internal storage to handle your GPS needs without deleting or moving ANY files. Personally, I'd just leave it alone.

If your interested in taking off files you don't need, the very first thing you need to do is to take a full backup of your unit, including the hidden system folder called .system, where all the map files reside.

One other word of caution - the .system folder is hidden for a reason. You can move or delete files from the Nuvi if you want but I'd highly recommend you leave the .system folder alone. Running the chance of bricking your GPS just to gain space on the Nuvi which you don't need doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

.

Do NOT move ANY of the system files (voices, text files, preloaded maps, etc) to the SD card.

And

And in addition, if you do decide you really want to delete files from the Nuvi you NEVER delete/move the folder as in most/all cases you'll need at least one file in all the folders in order for the Nuvi to operate properly. For example, you'll always need a GPX folder as there will be a current.gpx file created everytime you start up the Nuvi. You'll need a Voices folder as the voice file your using on the Nuvi to call out directions needs to be in that folder. In other words, leave the folder structure on your Nuvi alone.

Also, in your original post you say you have read the tutorials concerning making more space on your Nuvi. I would point out that those tutorials were written for the 1490T which has very limited internal storage space. Your 3590 does not suffer from these space limitations.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR YOU TO DO WITH YOUR NUVI IS TO MAKE A FULL BACKUP, NOT MOVING OR DELETING FILES.

Understood

I guess my plan was to clean up as much room on the main unit which probably comes from my old PC experiences of never having enough room and hoping to get more speed (not that I have seen any problems) through getting rid of the junk.

Rest assured I do backups everytime I change anything on my Garmin....even when I use POI loader to update POI files(just the POI folder in that case). That also comes from my experiences (painful at times) with PCs.

Thanks for the warnings and insights.

cleaning up a nuvi ...

I deleted all foreign-language text and voice files on my 2455 with no problems ... no need for them with me as I only speak English.

have enough room for the maps?

The primary reason people delete or move unneeded files is to make room for the new maps.

Deleting files won't make

Deleting files won't make your gps any faster. Garmin gps should have lots of room left fo map updates. There is no need to delete any file. Just put your additional maps for other countries on the sd card.
