Is it worth fixing/refurb. my 465T

Hello, I have a garmin 465LMT (465T) with lifetime maps and traffic receiver. It died on me two months past the two year extended warranty. I called garmin, they will exchange it for a refurb. unit for $110.00. I'm just wondering if it's worth it or if someone here knows where new ones can be purchased for a little bit more?

it depends

I believe you stated you are an OTR driver. If the 465 met your needs and you were satisfied with it then it may be worthwhile. I believe the 465 is no longer offered and the replacements are the DEZL models. As these are specialized units, they will cost more than the repair cost.

There are some drivers on the forums here using automotive units with several custom poi installed that give some of the functionality of the OTR units but not all.

LMT???

Depends on Garmin... will they transfer LMT to the $110.00 unit?
If no then you should consider another unit.
Remember... you don't exactly need a truck unit to do what has to be done in the trucking industry.
Just about every POI on the 465 and other truck units can be placed on most regular and new units.

465

I am a driver (CDL holder) most people when they say OTR they mean long haul. I'm not. I usually stay closer to home base. I have a Rand McNally TND720 that should be in my mail box any minute. I just can't decide whether the 465 becomes a paper weight or gets refurbed OR I take the money that it would cost to refurb. and put towards a new unit. btw the 465's are still available new.

If It Were Me

As member Microchip indicated, if they're willing to transfer the Lifetime Maps, and you were satisifed with your old 465, I would go ahead and purchase the refurbed 465. However, I would also ask them if the refurbed unit comes with any kind of warranty.

From what I've read, the refurbed units that Garmin ships out as replecements look no different than a new one. I also believe they are thorougly checked for functionality so as not to get returned again.

Be advised, it's my understnading they will not refurbish your unit and return it to you, you will get a completely different unit so they can speed up turn around time.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.
