2 weeks New Garmin 1490 LMT.

Hi Everyone, Good day Admin and other Associates.
gpsdog: I just bought myself another Garmin, Gps 1490LMT.
My first StreetPilot C330 has the best realistic voice and sound ever, apart from my Navigon with soft spoken words and hardly ever hear with my windows down. I just upGraded with the new 2013.10 Maps on both Units. Since I purchased a set of 2013.10 North America, I was unable to upload to my New unit because of no setup files, and or lack of Knowledge. So i guess I lost my money to Ebay sales $89.25. However my New garmin 1490lmt came with pre-loaded 2012.30 full Usa maps plus Canada, but allowed me to choose options for other or smaller regions which went very smoothly.Lifetime Updater was able to find new 2013.10 maps and updated software. Why did I have to purchase the same new maps on Garmin website and then update.LMT is lifetime map and traffic.
I have a few issues in my next coming forum talk.
??
Welcome to The Factory!
I'm not clear on what you're describing and whether there were questions in there that you'd like to be answered.
Please know that this site has a lot of great advice and helpful members, so keep asking and we'll see what we can do.
With a small amount of effort, your new Garmin should be able to install all of North America when updating maps. However, with the limited built-in storage on a 1490LMT:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375
you will have some hoops to jump through for best results.
Please make a backup of your nuvi's files before starting to tinker:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394
You also may want to download and save your owners manual:
http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/nuvi_1100_1200_1300_1400_O...
I don't know what size Junction View file is offered with the 1490, but if it's not the large one, you may want to manually download and install the large photorealistic jcv file to your nuvi. If you like Junction Views but don't have the large file now, it's well worth the extra effort to manually install the large file.
In the meantime, the eight Beginners Exercises from jgermann are a great way to learn about your new nuvi:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6654
If you haven't done so yet, install Garmin's WebUpdater and update your nuvi:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
Ditto for Garmin's POI Loader software. It appears that you've already registered your new nuvi with myGarmin, so that's a great start.
Finally, regarding Garmin Map Updates: most folks here will suggest your choose Option 2 rather than the Garmin-recommended Option 1 (Lifetime Updater).

Here is one more link you might want to check out in addition to the excellent ones provided by CraigW: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=c6483e8a197b8356&sc=documents....
This link takes you to some tutorials written by forum member Lilla specifically for the 1490T. These are step-by-step illustrated documents on backup, updating, deleting unnecessary files and installing maps on your nuvi.

Thanks.......have many questions ans issues
Thanks craigw for you quick help and directions.i need help with issues cuz im not so great in software applications.
cannot find an software to install my ebay 2013.10 maps which came without instructions.....thrashcan.
My Nuvi 1490lmt came with the smaller jcv file 48mb and starts with a micro second split-screen and them auto to larger screen with 2 seconds image. Can we increase time interval.
Solution....remove internal jcv file and folder.Split-screen will go away and larger view will be primary view, and transfer to Micro sd card.
Garmin/jcv/48mb
Supplimental files are placed in a seperate folder called "map" next to garmin folder.Only gmapsupp.img are placed in map folder. Gmapprom.img are not transferable which i do have.
even if you changed name of gmapsupp it still shows as independant names in nuvi map info.can it be named 1 name.Gmapprom is a basic start off map and cannot be moved.
Does 48mb means fewer jcv. Does larger file mean more jcv viws.
You can only add files with mapinstall onto a Sd card or to the internal memory if its not full.
you cannot remove maps, you can only change regions with map updater.
help me!
??
Really not sure what your asking but one thing I think I understand is that your saying that gmapprom.img is a basic start up map. If that's what you are saying then that is not correct as gmapprom.img is the MAIN map file on your Nuvi. To the best of my knowledge, it can not be successfully moved to any location on the Nuvi or SD card. The basic map you are referring to would be the World Basemap and be named gmapbmap.img
The 48MB JCV file contain considerably less views than the larger downloadable file. Definitively, on the 1xxx models, a larger JCV file means more Junction Views.

Thats what im saying
thank you T9 for your expert clarification, although what you are saying is a better translation than mine.
can i remove the smaller jcv and replace on my Sd card the larger jcv vile specific to my 2013.10 map.
How can i upload to my gps a purchased micro/sd card of the 2013.10 maps which arrived with no instructions nor do i have the expertise to desceminate its file, before it becomes a lost $90.00 cause to the thrashbin. there is no set up file nor an installer of the gmapsupp.img maps to the gps unit.
Cgpsmapper and gmaptool and other only uploads to the sd card and not the hard drive.i am sure copy and paste may not have indexing and other filing attributes, unless proven wrong.
Well
Well, if it's a purchased, legal, Garmin Map SD card you can't move the files from the card to the device. You can place the card in the Nuvi and use the maps, but that is the only option you have.
If the SD card is not a Garmin Map SD card but simply a normal SD card that someone has copied the map files to, then your probably out of luck as it will probably never work on your unit and we can't discuss illegal map software on this site.
You can move the smaller JCV file to an SD card and move the bigger one to the Nuvi but I really don't see why you'd want to do that. Why not just move the small file to your computer for backup purposes or delete it altogether as you have the larger file which makes the smaller one obsolete and you can't have both of the files selected at one time anyway.

Yes No

1) Yes, you can delete or rename the built-in jcv file on your nuvi and use the larger jcv file on a SD card for more and better quality Junction Views. You do need to use the specific jcv file for your version of City Navigator and place it in the proper folder on the SD card. If this is correct, tell us what map version you have now on your 1490LMT so we can direct you to the proper link to obtain the correct larger jcv file. Note that with each map update, you'll need to find and install the updated version of the large JCV file.
2) Is this the 2013.10 map you bought on a SD card?
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=253&pID=1456
If so, it is meant to be used from the card itself. See Garmin's requirements:
microSD™/SD™ Card Requirements
Map downloads are non refundable. Check compatibility before purchasing.
To view and use the maps on this card, you must have a compatible device with a microSD/SD card slot. Maps on microSD/SD cards cannot be copied or viewed on a computer.
Reduced price map updates are not available for these cards. If you want to update the maps, you must purchase a new card that includes the latest map data.
The microSD/SD card package includes a microSD card and an SD card adapter.
If so, I assume you bought this map on SD for a GPS other than your 1490LMT since the 1490LMT will get free map updates roughly 4x/year for the life of the GPS. The map on a SD card bought from eBay isn't needed for this device. Was it bought for your Street Pilot c330? If so, just insert it into the c330 and it should be recognized.
And, as t92... says, if it's not a genuine original Garmin map card, it won't work and you'll need to pursue a refund from your Seller or eBay/PayPal.
Just one more thought. You're asking some questions that require longish answers at times. It may be easier for you and for us if you limit your posts to one issue even if it means you need to post two or more messages.
Missed that
Missed that one. Your right, why if you purchase a LMT device are you buying maps elsewhere. LMT means Lifetime Map and Traffic updates at no cost to you.

Sorry
Im sorry if you though I was asking about an illegal purchase as the maps came in a complete sealable casing.Had to take a knife to cut through it and had all the symtoms of a manufactured product.I have never in my life indulged in illegal stuff nor do i intend. I am as honest as the next man. Please do not profile me. I am 58 yrs old and do an honest days work and go home to family. All i ask is freindship and kindness to someone looking for help.
Not a problem

Ah, OK. Given the description and the price paid, I'll assume you have a genuine Garmin map card. It will work with your Street Pilot c330, but you need to keep the card inserted in the c330--it can't be installed to the GPS, but must be run from the SD card.
Once inserted, go to your Map Info Page (or whatever it's called on the older Street Pilots). Uncheck the older map (the one on the Street Pilot memory) and check the 2013.10 map, then your c330 will display and use the new 2013.10 map on your older GPS.
See--as I said earlier, we're a nice and helpful bunch of folks here at The Factory
Positive ID maps
Yes indeed these are the exact maps purchased on line after i put the cat before the horse. My new lmt had not arrived so i assumed and made a fool of myself.
there is a lot of attempted piracy

There is a lot of attempted piracy and we don't look to enable those that do trade in pirated items. Then, on the other side of the coin there are a lot of people that just rip unsuspecting users off with bogus products.
What raised suspicions was you weren't clear on what you purchased other than "a map from e-bay." That statement raised the fraud warning level about 14 points on a scale of 10. While there are reputable dealers and resellers on flea-bay, there are also a great many not good ones either. Just because an item is shrink wrapped doesn't make it legitimate, it's the seller that places their reputation on the line.
One of the first things you should do with your unit is to do a complete backup of all the files and then register it on Garmin.com. Once registered you will be directed to the needed pages where you can update your unit directly from Garmin's servers.
As Craig stated, keep your questions simple and try to explain what you are asking fully. As good as the technical people here are, they aren't mind readers so a clear statement of the problem/issue will get it resolved the quickest. The other piece of advice, slow down. You aren't going to learn it all in the next couple of days so take the solutions provided, try them out and experiment a little before coming back with more questions.
You will find a lot of your questions will be answered through your own playing with the unit. Next tip, if you haven't done so, download and read the User Manual - not that skimpy quick start guide, but the user manual from Garmin. While we could provide the link to the manual download pages, try finding it on your own. Begin with registering your unit and look at the links from there - or type your model number and the words user manual in the search box on Garmin's site.

Thanks a million Boxcar I
Thanks a million Boxcar I concur with every sentence and admit a little over zealous about my hobby. yes I have registered with garmin all my products and do purchase maps from their website.yes i had researched many tools and advice from different forums although I had not purchased the LMT. My StreetPilot gave me a lot of experience with almost zero winnings, because i was unable to know thet I could not intercept internal memory on that unit.I purchased so many tools on line with no progress then. So I moved on to the newer readable hard drive gps. Thank you again for putting up with me and I look forward to a better understanding and interaction with everyone. I do appologise to you and Admin for being over burden to you with questions. One question and answer at a time.
DVD vs Download
I don't have high speed internet. Has anyone else asked for a DVD vs downloading the lifetime map updates? I understand that Garmin was charge a nominal fee for the disk and postage.

Park your body at one of the places offering free internet and download the update there. if you are in a food service establishment the manager will appreciate it if you go on the off hours as you will be there for a couple of hours.

@ gdfaini
If you have a laptop you can go to your local library & see if you can download it there.
You can also go see a friend who has a high speed connection with minimum a six pack and it'll be downloaded and installed before you know it.
