nuvi 7xx (GCD file) software version 5.40 released

Hopefully they got it right this time...

And don't let the "7xx" confuse you. Garmin should change this to "7x0" since "7xx" could mean either the nuvi 7x0 or 7x5 series. This firmware is ONLY for the 7x0 series.

I can't upgrade.

OK,

A little confused,

I have a Garmin Nuvi 760.

About 2 months ago I updates my lifetime maps to 2013.10. I also updated my firmware. It was updated to 5.30.

Since Updating I am experiencing the problem where after about 3 weeks my unit locks up. If I do a User data delete then everything is fine for another 2-3 weeks. Then Same thing User Data delete.

All along I have suspected that there was a problem with the trip flog filling up.

Now I find this post with info on a firmware 5.40.

And the first fix is:
Fixed an error that caused devices with lengthy trip logs to shut down.

I was right on the money.

The only problem?

Garmin does not acknowledge that there is a firmware 5.30 It shows the firmware going from 4.90. 5.40.

Also if I go to my Dashboard and try to update to 5.40 It tells me my system is up to date.

What gives here?

Plain as day my Garmin Nuvi 760 has firmware version 5.30 which was updated through dashboard.

Now they don't acknowledge that update on dashboard and it won't let me update to 5.40?

Can I try and goo back to 4.90? I am going to look into that right after I am done here.

Thank You.

Shutech

If you

If you use Garmin's Webupdater software, which is always better to use than myDashboard anyway, it will show that 5.40 is available on your 760.

5.30 was released and then pulled by Garmin because of errors that were found after it's released. You will probably never see it listed on the Garmin site again.

Thank You. Tried to go back

Thank You.

Tried to go back to 4.90 which did not work.

I had to leave the office for a while and just got back.

I knew about webupdater but did not have it on the machine I was using at the time and so I was in the middle of downloading it when I went to check if anyone had commented on my comment. So it is now downloaded on this machine and is acknowledging a 5.40 update which I am doing now....

It took on my unit and we will see in a few weeks if everything is back to OK.

So there you go, I can confirm in my case that being on Firmware 5.30 and trying to go to 5.40 Dashboard is not recognizing it and you need to use Webupdater.

To help others that might be experiencing this here is Garmin's Webupdater page. http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99...

Thanks

myDashboard is currently an issue when updating the nuvi 750. It recognizes the device but when you view "system updates" then view the "notes", a popup window displays the following:

Change History
Changes made from version 4.80 to 4.90:

That is all that's displayed. I have NOT followed through with the actual install so I can't comment on if the firmware update is actually installed to the unit. My nuvi 760 OTOH is detected and shows the update as normal...go figure.

It's always best to use WebUpdater. It's tried and proven and does what it's supposed to do without confusion. myDashboard is flaky and frankly, I don't understand why Garmin feels there needs to be two methods of updating critical firmware/system software, with one being error-prone.

I agree with this statement and wish Garmin would just drop myDashboard as a software update method (and get rid of Lifetime map updater while they are at it).

Unfortunately I am suspicious that over time Garmin will phase out Webupdater in favor of myDashboard. This is the strategy they have used in converting from Mapsource to Basecamp. I suppose there is a certain advantage to using a browser based update method (myDashboard) over a standalone app (Webupdater). It might lessen the cost of developing and maintaining multi-platform applications.

Related to this, I have always wondered why Garmin called the app WebUpdater, since it is an installed client based app and not browser based ... go figure rolleyes

..

It is nice to see that Garmin is still supporting the long retired 7x0 series. I wish they were a little more active with the 7x5 series too. Still a few crashes occurring with my 765T that I would love to see resolved. Plus GLG is still broken (though I do not use it).

Great (?)

Great news. Thanks for the notice.

For a change, I think I'll sit back a while before using WebUpdater to get this update given the past history with 5.1 and 5.3.

I certainly hope that folks that do this update will report back over the next month or so with a report on how it's behaving on their nuvi 7x0.

weird thing happened

Just updated and weird think happened. Updating process went OK, nuvi restarted and seem to be working fine. Than I shut id down and try to turn on again and... nothing happened. Dead like roadkill.

After a set of solid cursing I removed SD card which holds my US map. And it come to life again! Then I put SD card in again and it's still working. Note: SD card was installed in nuvi during all update process.

Not sure if it's just accidental problem or something with card after update but if you get this same problem try to remove SD card before calling Garmin. May help.

Hard reset?

grzesja, out of curiosity, did you do a hard reset on your 770 after the update?

It's good news that Garmin came out with the update so quickly, but I think I'll wait a while too.

No reset

I didn't do any resets. Just go with the flow of update. It goes like this:
1. Downloading and transferring update to Nuvi via WebUpdater
2. Nuvi after disconnecting from computer is doing restart on its own and installing update
3. After update is installed Nuvi reboots again and you get normal "working" screen.

Everything was working fine until this moment. But when I shut down Nuvi with power button and then turn it on again I get no reaction from Nuvi at all. Just black screen. It didn't turn on. But after I removed SD card and turn it on it was fine again. Then I put SD in again. Since then Nuvi is still working fine.

Nuvi 7x0 firmware release 5.4

I was wondering if anybody has tried the new 5.4 release??

Bad SD?

I had a similar problem awhile back that was due to a bad SD card. The connector on the card was physically damaged and the device wasn't working reliably. If you have problems again, try a another card.

@jale

Thanks but card is working fine. It was just one time problem. I think it happened because of update itself. Probably it is better to do all firmware updates with card removed and then after it's all done and working fine reinstall card.

Installed it on my nuvi 760 last week

So far, I've not had any problems. Been using my gps each day. It is worth noting that I didn't have any issues with 5.30, at least that I'm aware of.

I'm in

Thanks for the heads up, I just upgraded from a working 5.3 to the new 5.4. I'm impressed how long Garmin has continued to support this series, I wonder if most of Garmin's development team still uses them? smile

I think the user-base for the 7x0 series is more than we likely think. I believe the 7x0 series is the last before Garmin started over-saturating the market with so many different nuvi models.

nuvi 765

does anyone know when the 765 software will be updated.

7x5 software.

The current 4.40 version of the 7x5 software is pretty stable. The only significant problem I have heard about is that the Language Guide app is broken and this affects only a small handful of people who have the paid subscription version of the Language Guide. Since it has been over a year and Garmin has given us no indication that they intend to fix this, I do not look for any additional software updates on this series.

But then, Garmin has surprised us in the past by bringing out an update for a long discontinued model ... so who knows?

I have two of them, but can't spell the breed.

5.4 on 750 aok

Oh, and yes, I am using 5.4 on a 750 nuvi without any problems.

No More Resetting Every 800 Miles

Thanks for all of the discussion on this. I'm glad this update finally came out. I installed 5.30 by being careless. I thought I was updating Basecamp & I updated my 760 by not reading the messages that popped up. I've only driven about 15 miles so far, but I'm optimistic. And naive.

I've still had no trouble. (Still optimistic and naive.)

Still no problems on my nuvi 760

Have to say that maybe I'm the exception but the newest version is still working with no issues.
