Just got my android phone and am wondering if I can get red light and speed cameras installed on it. Free ones would be nice, but any recommendations out there.

Phone is samsung galaxy

apps for rlc etc.

Try google play store (formerly Android Market). Type "red light camera" in "search" There may be some apps you might consider.

Just use your Garmin

and let the phone keep some of its battery charge.

Camera data for Android

There are several Android GPS apps, and rumors of more on the way. I believe that some of these do have Red Light and Speed camera capability, but I have not done any real research on all the options available.

TomTom recently announced that they are working on an Android app that will be released "soon". It seems logical that this will have camera info, since their PND versions do. In addition, I believe that the CoPilot Live USA Android app has camera info - possibly as an option. (I'm not certain of this, but I know that Traffic is an optional extra for CoPilot, and suspect that camera data may also be an optional extra.)

GPS

Seems like my phone's GPS program is not as accurate as my Garmin, especially if it has to recalculate.

Waze!! Not sure how accurate

Waze!!

Not sure how accurate it is, but seems pretty good in major metro areas.

reason

I think the whole reason behind the android (notice there's no mention of iPhone, and by the time the iPhone 5 is out, there will be no more plans with minutes and number of texts, all unlimited and more $$$) is to avoid having to buy a gps. But the price is so low now, imho there is starting to be bang for buck with the nuvis of the world, esp. with LMT models. I wish I had grabbed another 2350LMT for $114 on amazon.com new. Of course it was too good to be true, they sold them all....

Just came back from trip

Just came back from trip with both garmin and android. Seems to me each has advantages. We wanted to stop for lunch. Searches with the garmin take so long and there's no way to review the ratings of restaurants. The android can search for places with ratings and reviews so we could decide where to go.

Like someone else said, we kept garmin on to save battery on android.

It's an interesting situation to watch over time.

I found an android app

I found an android app called camsam and it seems to know about the cameras in my area.

Garmin maps haven't been updated with some newer roads in my area whereas the android maps are more up to date.

Get a USB cable and a CLA charger

FWIW, it is possible to use your phone continuously if you get a charger that goes into your cigarette lighter and has a USB outlet.

Get the best of both worlds.

After reading posts here and

After reading posts here and elsewhere about this subject, I'm gonna check out both Waze and Radardroid. And test how accurate the up to date info is for both speedtraps and RLC info.

The #waze thingy seems like a pretty cool idea for up to date info on the mobile cameras. I'm curious to see how well it works in the Phoenix metro area?

Radardroid seems to work in conjunction w/ Google maps which I currently use quite a bit.

Will post a trip report ITT about the apps after i get to use them for a few hundred miles or so.
