Conflict with custom POI and built in POI?

Will there be a conflict between a built in POI and a custom POI? What will i expect if this happen, a built in POI pointing to a recently downloaded custom POI here?
Just one of those NEWbie questions... thanks!!!

Should not be

You access "Custom POIs" from Where To? > [down arrow] > Extras > Custom POIs. Whatever you select from this path will be "custom"

If you use one of the selections from "Where To?" other than Extras, you will get a built in POI.

got it!

thanks for the info, still learning how to use my garmin...

As jgermann said

No conflict with the Garmin Built-in and Custom POIs unless YOU choose the same POI from both locations !

Actually, he's using a 3490LMT so it would be:

Where To? > Categories > Custom POIs.

The other way applies to some other models. I have both the 765T and 3490LMT and it took me a second when I first got the 3490LMT to find the Extra POI's.

What would happen if you have two alerts, one built in and one custom, with the same alert distance and coordinates?

Probably nothing bad? Maybe it would sound one after the other?

Unless the newer models have that feature you can not set alerts for built in pois.I have a few custom pois that contain a few of the same pois with alert and never noticed a problem. Now if the coordinates are different pretty sure you will get two alerts.

For example, the Red Light Camera data. My NUVI40 has a provided file of RLC's that alert. Two dings and a graphic. If I use the POI Factory RLC file that has an entry with the same coordinates and a alert, what would happen?

Why don't you try yourself

Why don't you try yourself and see? Do a simulation of going to the coordinates see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31482

I believe your Garmin

I believe your Garmin Redlight Camera is the Cyclops safety system. There ar no voice alerts with them.
I would think if the same camera is in both files both will activate. I don't know what distance Garmin uses for their alerts to activate, but you know the POI Factory POI's distance since you set it in POILoader.

If both set at same distance, unknown which would activate first. Since I don't have Cyclops I have no way to test. Follow charlsed45's suggestion and do a simulation mode and you'll have the answer.

Yep, it is a Cyclops "sample" file, which mysteriously disappeared after 3 months and Garmin professed no knowledge of. Good thing I had a backup of it.

That is the problem. I would have to play with it quite a bit to get them at the same alert distance.

Actually, I kinda did this awhile back when I had a wav file for home and the Garmin destination alert. Think the second one interrupted the first one.

In my case

In my case, I can set the alert distance of the factory POI on my TomTom units, and I can independently set the alert distance of the POI that I have installed myself. I have no idea what would happen if I were to set them to identical values, as I intentionally make sure that they are set to different values.

With best wishes,

Simulation done

Done with simulation, Red Light Camera alerts worked, but as to any conflicts with POI's - since its a short test, i have not encountered any.. I noticed that doing a simulation on garmin 3490 is quite slow, unlike on my old Tomtom Go 910.

conflict ?

i dont think built in poi's conflict with one's you add because you pick one or the other to go to i dont beleive you can load two poi's at the same time.
you ether load custom poi's or built in

beeps,icons, voice or system error

As I previously posted, my recent downloaded RedLight Camera alert worked, since its a custom POI specific for red light camera, but if I downloaded something like a POI for gas station or a shopping center, a custom POI pointing to same coordinate as the built in POI - what will happen? a couple of "beeps" a voice and an icon, or worst a system error...

A lot of possibilities do occur: one taking priority over the other, trying to play both with a stuttering audio result, or even a crash and reboot of the GPS. The only way to find out is to carefully monitor what's set and what results you find. It'd be great if you could share your results once you're confident that you understand what's going on.

I'm pretty sure that I had GPS crash&reboot issues a few times when I had a mp3 TourGuide School Zone alert trying to compete with 1-2 other audio outputs my nuvi wanted to tell me.

Both

You don't load built in poi's

They are part of the map set. You can't delete them either.

As long as you have a Nuvi that will accept 2 or more Viapoints/Waypoints at the same time then there is no reason why you couldn't have a POI and Custom POI for the same place, selected at the same time.

Use Where To - Points of Interest - select the POI and press GO

then

Use Where To - Extras - Custom POIs - select the POI and press GO and then select Add to Current Route.

I believe "Alerts" would be issue if there is one

As t923347 points out, it is possible - using a route - to select the same POI from built-in POI and from Custom POIs.

I am unaware of any possible "alert" available for built-in POIs. There is a custom safety cameras database from Garmin (and perhaps others) but it would not be built-in.

I just did a simulation on a route in which I had two via points - both pointing to a Walgreens (which has a 24 hour pharmacy). I have a TwentyfourhourpharmacyTourguide POI file from which I selected that Walgreens. I added a via point for the same built in Walgreen.

I found no conflict. The 765T seemed to recognize that it was the same point because I did not get duplicate "arriving at ..." messages and I did get my TourGuide alert as expected.

For my unit, everything seemed to work as expected.

I have not had a problem

I have not had a problem with a few custom pois with the same coordinates.

There was a post way back someone wanted a alert when crossing over from OK to ARK.User wanted alert to say leaving and entering.I used EPE to test it out with the coordinates fairly close.Manage to get the both alerts to sound.

Alerts for built-in POIs

jgermann wrote:

I'm talking about the alert you get when you get to a destination. The voice.

I have a custom POI for Home that plays a Wizard-of-Oz wav at 30 feet from home. Today, I selected Go Home as my destination. As I was coming home, my TTS voice told me that I was arriving at my destination, then the custom alert beeped with no wav sound.

I worked fine after I changed the custom POI to alert at a farther distance.
