Charging and able to see Map

I have Garmin nuvi 680. The MSN Direct Receiver with integrated vehicle power cable is broken at the tip, where its connected to the back of Nuvi.

I can charge the Nuvi with wall charger [5v .5 amp] at home.

But on the road, when I charge the nuvi with Universal/ regular Mini-Cigarette-Lighter-Charger-Adapter,
Nuvi goes to ‘computer interface mode’ thus I cannot see the map while driving and charging at the same time.

Is there any way I can get nuvi being charged, and I would be able to see the map as well. With MSN Receiver, I was able to charge as well as see the map.

I have a Universal USM to miniUSB car Cigarette-Lighter-charger.

This will work as you want

The difference between the above and your current universal charger has to do with the cable--I believe the Garmin one has a resistor somewhere telling the device to go into operational mode--without the resistor, the cable assumes you're connected to a computer and will try to go into data transfer mode.

I see them offered under $10 with S&H on eBay:

or at Amazon:

PS--Welcome to The Factory!

@CraigW: The resistor

@CraigW: The resistor bridges one of the data pins with the seldom-used fifth pin in the mini-USB plug.

@OP: If you were wondering, the reason CraigW did not post a link to the MSN traffic cable is simply to save you a bit of money and time since MSN traffic was deactivated 1/1/12 and the MSN cable is no longer available direct from Garmin. If you weren't wondering or already knew this, ignore my comments.

options

Thanks for the replies.
I have a 12v car cigarette-lighter-charger that has various options for different type/size/pin adapters. One such adapter fits on the back of the Nuvi, where MSN Direct hooks up.

If I hook that car charger with the compatible adapter on the back of Nuvi, is it going to cause some problem with Volts/amp/electrical issue??

I don’t have MSN services, but it was easy to charge the Nuvi with that charger while driving and seeing Garmin's maps.

I remember

I remember doing the following with the USB cable on my old 350 and throw it out just in case it will work in your situation as well:

- Once the GPS goes into USB mode, pull the cable out from the device and it should start to reboot. As soon as the Garmin logo appears on the screen, quickly plug the cable back into the GPS.

In the good old days, going through that procedure would result in the Nuvi booting up in regular GPS mode.

Hopefully it will be a work around for you.

new Nuvi

The option you have provided, does not work on Nuvi 680.

My Q is : I have a car charger that was used for Nokia cell phone. It does not have output/input/mA/volt etc mentioned on it. The other end of that car charger fits on my Nuvi where Wall-charger-end is hooked, next to the mini USB slot. Should I use that unbranded 12v car charger to charge my GPS.

I don't know normally, what output the car charger throws out? is it going to damage inside electronics, if i hook the Nuvi to that car charger? The car charger's pin is fitting on the slot, next to the mini USB slot, where the other end fits of the wall-charger/adapter.
