WebUpdater can not find device

Recently, I started having problems with my Garmin WebUpdater finding my device. The WebUpdater shows my F drive where I am plug into but does not find my Garmin unit number. I deleted the software and reinstalled it again. Same problem.

Windows Vista is my operating system. Any thoughts?

You didn't say what GPS

You didn't say what GPS unit,or what software version of the unit you have. There are some known issues depending on what you have.

In general, restart Windows Vista - not a soft reset, turn it off, then back on. At the same time, make sure your GPS is on as if you were ready to navigate, not turned off. After Windows starts up again, and is COMPLETELY started, plug in the turned on GPS unit.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the information.

My unit is a Garmin 780 and it the software version is 4.80.

I tried your instructions and it did not work.

.

On the nuvi, check the file GarminDevice.xml in the x:/Garmin folder:

Connect the nuvi to the PC and browse to the x:/Garmin folder. In that folder will be a file named GarminDevice.xml. This file is used by WebUpdater, myDashboard, the map update verification process and the online registration process. The file contains various info on the unit software version, voice versions, text versions etc that are contained within the nuvi's non-user accessible memory area.

Right-click on GarminDevice.xml and select "open with" and open it using Internet Explorer or Firefox (or whatever browser you use). Scroll down to the end of the file and check for errors (there will be an obvious error message). If there are errors, the file is corrupted and should be deleted from the nuvi. On the next power-cycle, it will be regenerated from scratch.

Delete the file from the nuvi using Windows Explorer. Then safely disconnect the nuvi from the PC by ejecting it using the task bar icon.

Remove the SD card from the nuvi if you have one installed.

Power-cycle the nuvi and let it boot fully to the Where To? screen. With the nuvi *on*, connect it to your PC via USB and again, check GarminDevice.xml for errors (there should be none).

Now run WebUpdater which should see the nuvi.

In the future, remove the SD card, then power up the nuvi first and let it boot to the Where To? screen *before* connecting it to the USB port on the PC. Some units are corrupting GarminDevice.xml if you plug it into the PC with the nuvi powered off and/or if an SD Card is installed in the nuvi.

webupdater program cannot find GPS

I've always had problems with the updater programs not being able to see the GPS. I know I've got a good connection as the gps drive shows up on my desktop and the BaseCamp program can communicate with the unit. It's the updater programs that screw things up. I'd say 1 out 4 times I cannot get the programs to recognize the unit but deleting the XML file worked. thanks
