Use of SD card on Tom Tom

I have a Tom Tom Eclipse (in dash unit). It has an SD card slot. What can I store on this card besides alternate maps? When I put an SD card in the slot and connected it to my computer, the SD card appeared in the computers directory. Just to test what it can do I copied a pdf file to the card. My Tom Tom can read documents. I disconnected the Tom Tom from the computer and went to documents to read the file - nothing was found. I then connected the TT again to the PC and started TT Home 2. It asked if I want to write to the internal memory or the card - but I stopped there because Home 2 will not write Poi files from POI factory so there was no point in trying this.
With my Garmin I can put poi files on the internal memory and the SD card and can access both. How does the Tom Tom SD card work to do thie. Do I need to create folders on the card that match the folders on internal storage for poi files and itineraries? And then will the Tom Tom read from both internal storage and external storage as required.
There is nothing that I have found on the TT website about the SD card other than storing maps files. Internal memory is running close to capacity. It would be nice to add additional storage.
Any help appreciated.

POIs go in the map folder. These folders can be moved to a card: art, audiobooks, contacts, mp3, photos, sounds, voices etc.

Is it possible to just create a second map folder on the card, without moving the map, just for POIs? Will the Tom Tom access both?

I'm not sure that I understand what you are proposing. On my TomTom (which is a very different model), the system will look for POI files in the same folder as the map.
I have heard of TomTom models that will look for the map folder on either an SD card or in the main memory, but I have never heard of one that looks for folders with identical names, with the map in one place and the POI files in another. That does not mean that it cannot be done, just that I have never heard of it being done. (Although it does seem to me to be an extra complication that adds a feature that almost no one would need. Normally the map and the POI files would just go in the same folder.)

I don't want to move my map
I don't want to move my map file to the SD card. But I would like to use the SD card to add additional storage space to the Tom Tom.
I had an old Tom Tom One XL that had to have the whole internal memory transferred to the SD card and this was terrible as it slowed down the unit when using the GPS. That Tom Tom got dumped because of that and other problems. I was hoping that the newer Tom Toms would be able to use the SD card as additional memory - not replacement memory.
Apparently, this is one more thing that makes Garmin better than Tom Tom as I can put POIs and route itineraries both into internal memory and the SD card on my Garmin with no problem at all and access them all.
This Tom Tom was not my choice - it came built in with the vehicle. I have been trying to make the best and most of it - with a lot of frustration.

How about a test

I am not familiar with the model that you have, so I do not know what can or cannot be done with it - my knowledge is limited to the units I own. However, I can say that with my GO LIVE 1535 I have one map on the SD card and another map (of a different area) in the internal memory, and do not see any difference in the performance between them.
Since there was almost no cost difference between the Class 10 mSDHC card I installed and the slower cards that are available, I did make sure that I put in a relatively fast card, just as a precaution. I have no idea whether or not the Class 10 card is responsible for the good performance when using the map on the SD card.
Do you happen to have a fast card that you can use to experiment with your GPS? You are assuming that this new unit will behave exactly like your previous device, but my GPS does not do so, and your current GPS may or may not do so. A test should allow you to confirm which scenario is correct for your current GPS. IF the performance does turn out to be equivalent, I don't see a downside to moving the map to the SD card.

They do (at least mine does) but as tendriver said, not all items can be moved to the SD card, and POI files have to stay with the map.
If you need to free up internal storage space, you can

NO, this will not work. FWIW, I have a bunch of 3rd party POIs in my map folder & they add up to only 2.50MB total.

The SD card IS additional memory, not replacement memory, unless you put a navcore on it, then it becomes the default memory.
