unpaved roads

was takeing a trip. I entered a Destination I had my streetpilot c340 set for avoidence of unpaved roads & also set for shortest route. It kept trying to send me on unpaved roads. Has anyone else had this trouble

was there a better alternative?

I think the "avoid" settings are prioritization changes, not absolute restrictions. For example, I generally leave the avoid U-turn setting turned on, but still do see some recommended U-turns.

In your circumstance do you think there was a reasonable alternative not using the unpaved roads?

Thats what I love about my 660, compared to the Nav system in my 2011 Ford Escape...
In the 660 I can select Avoid Un-Paved roads....
There is no such setting in the Escape...

And One time, in Arkansas, I followed the Escape's Nav instead of the 660...... And ended up on a gravel road for 10 miles....

Sure, and in a Ford Escape, a compact SUV which comes in either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, Ford probably figured getting you on dirt roads was a feature not a bug. wink I'm kidding. I agree with you; I try to avoid them as well. Take a rental car on a dirt road, and congratulations, you've just voided your rental agreement and opened yourself up via your signed contract to all kinds of charges.

2 possibilities

shortround62 wrote:

I can think of two possibilities for being sent down an unpaved road even with Unpaved Roads set as an avoidance:

- when there is no way to avoid a particular unpaved road

- when your current map incorrectly thinks the street is paved. What version of City Navigator North America is on your GPS?

Both of the above would absolutely direct you onto unpaved roads when it's the shortest route. Please note that most folks choose "Fastest Route" not "Shortest Route." What happens when you choose Fastest?

- (OK, a third possibility): It's possible that your old Streetpilot needs a firmware update. Have you run WebUpdater with your GPS?

-(#4) It may be that others with your model Streetpilot will confirm that this happens with them as well and it's a bug with that GPS

PS--Congratulations: You've been a Factory member for 5 years and 1 day. I bet there aren't many other 5+ year members here.

AFAIK

As far as I know the Nuvi will not route you down an unpaved road if you have that avoidance set UNLESS there is no logical alternative route that it can determine. On the other hand, it can also happen when the map data doesn't have a particular road designated as unpaved. In that case it thinks it is handling the avoidance correctly but you can easily see that it hasn't.

I use the c340 as well, and have seen the above issue from time to time. I'd suggest it is mainly due to road classification not being labeled as an unpaved road.

shortround62 --- If you'd like, let me know a good start and end point and I can confirm if I have the same result on my unit. I have been updated to the latest and greatest firmware and maps.

What version is your map that you currently have loaded?

it gives me 3 route types to choose from on my GM unit

One of the features I really like with my built in GM nav system over my Garmin units is when I enter a destination it gives me 3 route types to choose from. It allows me to look at a simple chart showing each route broken down by road types that route would use and how many miles of each of those road types. It also shows the different total times for each route and then you can decide if the distance and time savings would make it worth taking a route that had some unpaved sections or even toll roads or ferries.

Most

Most all of the newer Nuvi models do pretty much the same thing as GM Nav. On a 37xx for example you can set it up to show you these 3 different routes, faster time, shorter distance, and less fuel. All 3 take into account your avoids and will display distance and time to your destination.

You need to set up the Nuvi to do this one time only by going to:

Tools - Setting - Navigation - Automotive - nuRoute - Calculation Mode, select Prompted and save this setting.

avoid

yea dont know if it can avoid unpaved roads

I knew you could set a default preference for the type of route

I knew you could set a default preference on most nuvis for the type of route to use every time when you enter a destination but wasn't aware of any nuvi that would present you with the three different type route options for you to compare and choose from every time you enter a destination.

This is a quick shot of the 3 route choices info screen showing the time, total miles and how many miles of each road type. You then just touch either the Quick, Normal or Short button and it enters that route and starts the navigation prompts, it also shows the three different options on the map screen in different colors and you can just select the routes color without viewing the info screen:

unpaved roads

was in nova scotia 2 years ago, and forgot to set my GPS to avoid unpaved roads. Seems there are quite a few there, and I ended up taking the rental car down a very nice gravel road, when later turned into less of one, and eventually to two tracks with grass in the middle. Started to get worried what was next, but the GPS insisted my turn was coming up shortly, and all was well. She was right - still, I turned on "avoid unpaved roads" at the next stop, lol.

I had a similar situation in New Brunswick. We followed the directions down a nice gravel road. As we continued, there became less gravel, and a few ruts in the road which were replaced by deeper ruts, and eventually rather large rocks. We had to back up to a point where we could turn around and try a different route.

happens in remote areas

One of my customer locations, a power plant, that I visit fairly regularly is a bit off the beaten path - not unusual for power plants. My nuvis try to take me on a path that is possibly more direct but results in the need to drive the last few miles on mud. There is a paved road that takes you right to the entrance, possibly it is less direct. I just think the routing of the nuvis is not so great when you are in these more remote areas. If you can get some advice from a local about what roads to take, it is worthwhile.

Avoidance for unpaved roads is turned on in my nuvis.

To me it is not different from the nuvi routing in general. I sometimes turn it on around down even though I know where I am going. It helps me avoid missing a turn. But sometimes the routing is not the best. It will get you there but the honestly may be a better way.

Unpaved

My 2595lmt has routed me to an Unpaved road once already.

I Wish...

Nuvi 750 can't be made to prompt the user for routing options like the older Garmin Quest does. Sure miss that feature. I don't use the Quest for routing anymore, but I customized its data fields to my liking and use it in tandem with the Nuvi on the dash of a VW Vanagon camper.

I haven't ever had a problem with being taken down gravel roads, but do take issue with the 750 Nuvi's penchant for selecting inappropriate short cuts when I've got it set to take the shortest route.

And Santa tells me that I may possess a Nuvi 2595 in the future- if I behave.

This is what the Nuvi does. Using the arrow keys on the left side of the screen you can see each route individually with the time and distance displayed for that selection shown along the bottom of the screen.

My 1490

Somewhere in Iowa, I was driving on county road when I clicked GoTo. At each and every gravel road intersection it wanted me to turn, sending me over to a parallel state highway. I rebooted, and then it did avoid the gravel roads.
Weird.
