Nüvi 760 stops after 10 sec.....

My Nüvi 760 died (probably) yesterday! Right after start, the Nüvi logo shows up, the maps are loaded, "Accept" shows up, AND the thing dies!

The next day, I installed a new battery, the battery is filled 100% up after a charge, reloaded a back-up that usually works OK, downloaded an update from Garmin, everything seems fine, until the download is finished. I waited 10 sec, pulled out the USB cable and got the message (something like that):

"Writing to the file ....DP(1)0-0+4 was not terminated/finished. Probably something wrong with your unit hardware/connection to the internet or a wrong cable"

Back to business: 10 seconds after starting the GPS, it dies.

OK guys: Any brilliant advise?

Cable pulled too quickly?

I don't see a "Safely eject" step mentioned so it appears the USB cable was pulled while files were still being written to the nuvi. I suggest trying the update again, doing a Safe Eject, and removing the nuvi from the computer and USB cable when you're told it's safe to do so.

Remember that the nuvi 7xx series uses USB 1.1 which is very slow when doing data transfers in both directions.

Older nuvi - USB 1.1: 12 Mbits/s
Newer nuvi - USB 2.0: 480 Mbits/s

If you've ever done map updates and thought your 760 took so much longer to transfer the large new map files from computer to nuvi than your 1390T, you were correct.

Another cable

Use a different USB cable.

Same result..

Made a safe eject, downloaded the map again, made a safe eject again, new cable etc: same result, the GPS die short after start.

storage?

Any chance your nuvi is out of space? How much free space is shown on the Garmin drive when connected to the computer?

my 760 died, too!

Thurs night did an update to the software on myGarmin as well as updated maps. after installing, it would only stay alive for 10-15 secs, enough to enter password and get to a map view and then it would freeze. (it would freeze in 10-15 secs regardless of what screen it was on). Friday was hell...

long story short, found this forum with instructions. have a good read of it before you do anything just to get a good understanding. http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=116365

the "secret" is to keep you finger pressed while the Updater software is working. only release your finger when the GPS screen says it's loading the software.

not sure what when wrong but it seems to be working now.

on button

I was surprised, only 130 mb!

Sounds like worth a try, OK, where did you press your finger, when exactly did you start pressing, understand you released when updater says: Downloading soft ware (first left box of the three??

When you turn on your GPS

When you turn on your GPS you slide the power button to the left. This time slide power button to left and hold it all the way left for about 10 seconds then release it.

Tried it: Garmin logo pops up, shuts down before "Accept", no luck!

No I never tried oily's

No I never tried oily's procedure. Had similar problem on the update before this last one. Holding the on button fixed it for me. May have taken a few tries. Have you try to re-download the maps just to the GPS?

Garmin repaired it..

Went back to Garmin, got a fair deal, inclusive transferring the maps on an exchanged Nuvi.
