Chicago Speed Cameras

"Gov. Pat Quinn to OK speeding cameras near city schools, parks" as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Great. There will be speed cameras every couple of blocks in Chicago! Quinn says for the safety of the children. BS!!! If that was the case then speed cameras would of been here years ago!! It's all about the money to bail out bankrupt Illinois. That extra money from speed cameras will still be mishandled!

Channel 5 news in Chicago, Pat Quinn has signed the bill.

If it is anything like red light cameras....

The amount of red light cameras in Chicago is HIGH...
I can just imagine what this will be like....

Once we find one.... Will there be a special place to post info on it? or just in the Red Light post areas, and you'll parse them to the correct location?

I usually take my Garmin with me when I drive in Chicago.... for Red-Light warnings... Now it will be more of a need......

Chicago Speed Cameras

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-02-06/news/ct-met-ch...

Some highlights from that article,

"The governor spent months reviewing the proposal before signing the legislation in private Monday, the last day for him to act before the measure would have become law on its own. During that time, Quinn's office was contacted more than 200 times by people opposed to the speed cameras measure. The governor received just 19 letters, calls and emails in support."

Interesting how so many are opposed to the cameras, but are basically ignored.

"Such Big Brother-type concerns forced Emanuel to support compromise legislation that limits the hours the cameras can operate. They will run from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays in school zones when class is in session. The cameras near parks would start rolling one hour before opening to the public and stop one hour after closing."

Whatever happened to "When School Children are Present?" A lot of people are going to learn the hard way that the speed limit is 20 mph, even when schools are closed at 6:30 pm. Ridiculous.

"A separate Tribune analysis of a federal database of pedestrian fatalities in crashes showed that Emanuel's proposal would have a limited impact on fatalities. Of the 251 pedestrian deaths in the city between 2005 and 2009, fewer than half occurred in the "safety zones" where cameras would be located, and fewer than one-quarter of those involved speeding."

Not only are the citizens ignored, but cold hard information is as well. Great.

"Even as Emanuel moved quickly to lay the groundwork for the speed camera initiative, the mayor's office was resisting requests for internal documents about the plans. Emanuel has denied access to hundreds of emails on the topic while his lawyers worked to redact information they consider exempt from open records laws."

Gee, I wonder why he's being so secretive?

I don't want to downplay safety issues when it comes to children going to or coming from school. It is a tragedy when a child gets hit by a car. Any measure that truly increases safety is fine by me. I don't believe these cameras will do anything other than issue tickets for non-safety violations.

Do we know for sure?

...

I am used to signage around schools that have attached yellow flashing lights alerting drivers that a 20 MPH (or sometimes 15 MPH) is in effect up ahead when children are literally outside the school building (arrival, recess, end-of day). Otherwise, the yellow light is not flashing and the speed limit stays at the posted speed of that roadway (say 35 or 40 MPH).

With such flashing lights, drivers are told "when children are present" as opposed to having to quess (at times when they can see no children)

When I read the article, I did not see anything that said what would trigger a violation in a school zone.

The sign displayed with the article read:
SCHOOL
SPEED
LIMIT
20
on school days
when children
are present.

The hours of operation cover all of the school day and then some.

Since the article said
"Under the law, speed cameras can be installed within one-eighth of a mile of schools and parks. A Tribune analysis found about 47 percent of the city would fall into the safety zones",
it would seem that M-F a large part of the city would have normal speed limits falling to 20 MPH.

There was a sentence that said "Speeders going 6 to 10 mph over the limit would face $50 fines. Those going 11 mph and over would face the full $100 ticket" which indicated that there was built in tolerance - which is good.

But - 20 MPH around all schools for the hours cited seems ridiculous, so I hope that someone from the Chicago area could comment on whether all of the "safety zones" have the sign listed above as opposed to some alternative like the flashing yellow illuminated ONLY when children are present.

From the Chicago schools I'm familiar with, just those signs are posted. No flashing yellow lights. There could be some flashing yellow lights, but it's not the norm.

This is why I'm really skeptical of these speed cameras. If they want to run them while the children are in danger, fine. If they want to run them just because it's Tuesday, 5:39 pm, and a school zone with no children present, NOT FINE!

Sun-Times says law will go

Sun-Times says law will go into effect July 1, 2012. Some red light cameras will be fitted with speed cameras also. I bet speed cameras will be operational even during summer break.

This site http://www.photoenforced.com/ reports that there are already speed cameras in chicagoland. Can anyone verify?

Are there speed cameras at I-Pass lanes in Automatic and that one in manual lane in Chicagoland? I always speed thru those.

I would not be surprised if they did start using the speed cameras while the kids are on summer vacation.

As far as speed cameras, the only ones I've ever heard about are the vans they move around from location to location to catch people speeding in construction zones.

I don't think there are speed cameras for I-Pass lanes yet. Once the tollway realizes they've lost a lot of money due to rate increases, they'll come up with that plan.

Ticketing will start July 1st 2012

I think speed cameras in Chicago will start TICKETING on July 1st, 2012.

This is all I found so far.

"The bill, S.B. 965, will go into effect July 1. It allows the city to use speed enforcement cameras with 1/8 of a mile, or one city block, around schools between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. each weekday." -CBS Chicago

"As of 2011, there are about 190 red light cameras in chicago." -cityofchicago.org

"Right now, the city has red light cameras in 79 locations within a 1/8 of a mile of a school or park" -CBS chicago

6-10 MPH over: $50
11+ MPH over: $100

Chicago's new school zone camera law

I live in the Chicago area. The school zone law here has long been, and the signs specify a speed limit, as twix says, "20 mph on school days when children are present." Just that phrase is vague. What does that mean? When one or more kids is walking within the marked school zone? When children are in the building but no kids are outdoors? It's very vague. I prefer the way they do it in Massachusetts with the signs that say 20 mph when lights are flashing, and those lights are on timers set for just before and after school. Of course, they go off on days when school is not in session, but at least there is no dispute about whether the speed limit is reduced.

Having the cameras work 14 or however many hours of all days that have nothing to do with the school calendar when no one is around is going to cause a huge outcry when this takes effect in Chicago next summer and people start getting tickets in the mail for going 25 mph when and where it's always been legal. I understand Rahm has severe budget problems, but I think this is going to hurt him politically. It was not thought through very well and is not a good decision.

The article you posted is way shorter than this one.

"The mayor's administration made other tweaks to the camera plan Wednesday, hoping the full council passes the plan next week."

Next week, your announcement will be correct.

If the red light cameras don't get you, the speed cameras will. I didn't know school was in session until 7 pm. I didn't know that 20 mph would be enforced while school children are not present. Why don't they just make the entire city 20 mph, and no rights on red. That would make everyone safe!

I've spent so many sleepless nights, tossing and turning or waking up in a cold sweat, yelling "SLOW DOWN, DON'T SPEED AND RUN OVER THE CHILDREN." Thanks to Rahm, I won't have to worry any more. [/sarcasm]
As far as electing different pols here, there are no different ones. If you don't agree to toe the party line you don't make it on the ballot. Every 4 years the line toeing party insiders all gather at Rep/Dem get togethers in a big room with a bunch of chairs with various political offices on them. The music starts, they all circle the chairs, and when it stops whatever chair they sit in is the office they run for.

Stop giving them ideas!

Don't give them any more idea$ to work with!

Some things never change such as the unholy marriage of Illinois politicians to money. Mike Royko wrote a column years ago about a citizen named Henry whose favorite hobby was writing nasty letters to politicians accusing them of pandering to special interests. The guy would put a one dollar bill in the envelope because he was sure the pols could smell the cash and would therefore open the letter to get the money and might just read it instead of feeding it unopened to the shredder. The pols would write back to complain about cash and attempted bribery. If they sent the bill back, Henry would send them another nasty letter with two one-dollar bills inside saying he could keep doing this until he found the pol's price and therefore start getting favors granted like all the special interests the pol had already sold out to.

Chicago Speed Cameras

I think Drew275 is being a bit over-reactive in his summation. Keep in mind that the speeding cameras being placed around the schools and parks will cover only about 47% of Chicago, keep in mind that's less than half the city. And sure it will bring in Hundreds of Millions of Dollars (http://www.inquisitr.com/898902/chicago-speed-cameras/) for the city, but we all know that it is for (wink, wink) the safety (wink, wink) of the children that are being forced to cross new gang territory the way Emmanuel has closed schools.
Make sure your Chicago speed cameras are updated on a daily basis... no winks there!!!

As i always say

They just continue to find ways to make money anymore. Funds are going down and instead of finding ways to cut back, the government is finding ways to spend more for no good reason. Take new police cars for instance, the old ones still worked just fine but lets spend 60,000 each plus on new cars.

Big thanks on the update, Angela!
