Chicago Speed Cameras

"Gov. Pat Quinn to OK speeding cameras near city schools, parks" as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Great. There will be speed cameras every couple of blocks in Chicago! Quinn says for the safety of the children. BS!!! If that was the case then speed cameras would of been here years ago!! It's all about the money to bail out bankrupt Illinois. That extra money from speed cameras will still be mishandled!

Not sure, I did forward the list to Angela over the weekend though. Waiting to hear from her on when it should be included in the file.

Thanks to everyone who sent info. I do have a list of the locations and have checked that they are official and not just under consideration, so I will be adding all the locations listed.

Take it slow if you need to.

Angela, you can take your time implementing these because many of these are not in place. Supposedly slowly by the end of the year. First 30 days of installation only incurs warnings. Don't want to overburden you with the list. smile Thanks a bunch!

great, thank you

Thanks for handling this. As said above, it will be a while although I would not be surprised if they hurry the roll out and are ahead of schedule. I wish the city were as quick to fix potholes and trim trees as they are to put speed cameras up. Addressing constituents needs seems to be low on the list of priorities.

These locations have been added.

Our speed camera file is now current with the current list of speed cameras in Chicago. Since these are "zones" the exact location is approximate. If you live in the area and drive by any of these parks or schools and see the actual camera please send us the exact coordinates if possible. They are often located near crosswalks.

Thanks for your help!

actual gps coordinates (?)

I hope they are all added just to be on the safe side and better to slow down and not chance it with an early alert, than have no warning and pass by one that goes live without any formal news article.

I don't know how helpful or exactly accurate the listed locations are in reference to the actual speed camera's physical location.
That said, I would be happy to actually stop by some of the ones that are listed in my area and get the actual coordinates standing next to the camera or cameras should they have more than 1 - most likely to catch multiple directions.

Also, please be aware that these alerts by gps are even more significant for these speed cameras. The radar guns in these are mounted on a vertical axis as opposed to the typical horizontal access.
I'll skip the long and dry explanation, but the effect of these off axis waves means even your top of the line detectors will be blind until you're well within the range of a speed already clocked on you. Think of this as basically like giving the alert warning of an instant on or laser gun. I have a terrible radar and laser detector, and for example, when on the highway, I can get a measured and hit of a radar gun easily from over a couple miles. The signal indication will let's me know from what direction the threat is in relation to myself and a strength to easily know when I'm getting closer and he's right on top of me.
I'd say that's a pretty good buffer for knowing and making sure you're not speeding. Now, an off axis hit with the same detector will shrink your alert zone to maybe on if you're lucky around 1000 feet.

Point being have the geolocation is vital to avoiding the city turning out your pockets to line theirs.

Good news is the IL Supreme Court is going to hear the legitimacy of Chicago's program since they didn't implementated the program possibly illegally and was in violation of trying to supersede IL state uniform code.

With ALL the Corruption in this City and state is there REALLY anyone who trust that SAFETY crap???

Political corruption is the use of legislated powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain.

Is this view a bit cynical, and exaggerated? I mean wasn't it not too long ago that Rod Blagojevich was called the last of the Mohicans?

The only speed alert I need in Chicago.

The only speed alert I need in Chicago is a speed cam capturing me speeding out of the Chicago city limits.

Speed cameras in school

Speed cameras in school zones is a good idea. Yes that would be a lot within Chicago, but they will likely start small.

it is what it is...

It's already difficult dealing with the traffic, now the eye in the sky get a steroid injection...lovely.

Speed Cameras

Saw my first speed camera in Chicago yesterday. It was on Foster Avenue right next to a park. It was well marked if you were looking, but who is always looking for signs? Going to start limiting my trips into Chicago as much as possible. I don't need to add to their tax base. I normally don't bring my GPS when I know where I am going, but for now will use it every time I venture into the city until I know where the cameras are.

Mostly agree... except for Lou Mzlhati's deep dish pizza (http://www.loumalnatis.com/) - first time I had it I almost wept at my table it was sooooo goood... so worth it!

You can Lou Malnati's out in

You can Lou Malnati's out in the suburbs where speed cameras don't exist. As a Chicago resident on the far NW side of the city, I do my best to avoid the city. The only people that like Chicago are those that don't have to pay our property taxes here-visitors.

Looks and sounds great....until you get here

We have friends from out of town that visited and they always liked to go on their own w/o us driving them around the city. Once, we told them to be careful around certain areas. The next morning in their hotel, they picked up the daily newspaper with the front page stating something along the lines of 9 separate shootings overnight. They told us they thought we were joking, until they saw the paper. smile

I'm sure we all have friends that went to school at Northwestern, and U of Chicago. A tale of two cities.

Chicago looking to add new speed cameras

out of state cars

Does anyone know if they issue redlight / speeding camera tickets to out of state plate cars in Chicago?
Just curious.

Chicago has always been it's own state, at least in it's own mind.

If your registration is for example from Michigan where the front plate is not a requirement you will be fine.

Speed Camera Test Period Over

I believe the test period for the Chicago speed cameras is coming to an end and they are going prime time.

Cameras in nine so-called “safety zones” logged 233,886 speeding violations between Aug. 26 and Oct. 9.

Those nine alone would have generated nearly $14.0 million worth of citations in just 45 days.

The Chicago politicians are literally salivating at the prospect of the increased TAX revenues while still proclaiming that the cameras have nothing to do with money but are only about safety!

Except they aren't tax

Except they aren't tax revenues, and that's why the pols like them so much. They can disassociate themselves from the cameras, while the same can't be said of tax increases. Taxes are way too high here-I was shocked when I compared property tax rates in Indianapolis vs. Chicago. The cost of corruption and union labor becomes readily apparent when you see them paying less than half of what I pay here for property of the same value.

According to CBS news tonight, the Mayor's budget for 2014 includes income from the speed cameras of $101 Million.

Yikes!

They are counting on a total

They are counting on a total of $120 million, 60 million from red light cameras and 60 million from speed cameras. Even though it's all about keeping children safe, not money.

Chicaago Cameras

Dudlee, I think that is going to happen really soon. The Chicago Authorities are always looking for new ways to make more money. We have some places with 3 cameras in one block, just see Addison and Western, there is speed camera on Western, Speed Camera on Addison, and red light camera on the corner Western & Addison, As you said, this is Crook County.

It is all about the money. Everyone knows this.

The sad thing is, Chicago just needs to be its own state.

Reduction

Finally some of the cameras are coming down in Chicago as lawsuits were filed.
