Beanbag mounting kit

I have a Garmin c340. Does the beanbag mounting gizmo by Garmin really work? I read somewhere that it won't work until you buy another gizmo. Anybody has experience with it? I don't want to waste >$30.oo for some useless thing. Can someone point me to a cheaper source?

I don't think we can use

I don't think we can use bean bag with c340. We have the option of a friction mount which I have along with the suction mount under the accessories category. The c5xx series can use the bean bag mounts.

Garmin bean bag mount

I've heard both pro's and con's about the bean bag mount, but I can tell you I've been using it for my Mio for over a year and love it. As long as your dashboard is clean and dust-free, it works great. I've modified it for my Mio, and yes, the bean bag isn't enough, you need a bracket to connect your GPS to the bean bag itself.

See my posting here along with instructions. Not sure why you couldn't find a mount similar for your model.

My post explains in detail how I modified it (one screw), what parts I used, where I got them and how much they cost me. Hope this helps.

Beanbag mount is great

We have the 680 which we just got a month ago. We got the beanbag mount and I can tell you it works great. We were in Louisiana for 16 days driving on all their roads and the only time it shifted a little bit was when we were stuck on a 14 mile stretch of gravel road after leaving a state park and exiting the other direction than the one we entered. Other than than the 680 never moved. It makes it simple to move from one vehicle to the next.

Just picked it up

I just got the Garmin bean bag mount today, $50. CDN sad , 1 panic stop up to now and it did not move, so it looks good except the price...

Bean Bag Mount

I've used a beanbag mount for years with my GPSMAP 196 and then 296. Have started using it with my Nuvi 680. As mentioned above, as long as your dash is clean it works great and is the easiest mount there is for moving from car to car.

Really like the beanbag

I really like the bean bag mount.

It has good weight and a sticky bottom to prevent it from moving around too much (although it can on hard turns).

I don't regret buying it at all.

Just bought the bean bag mount

I just bought the bean bag mount. It seems to be working. To improve the the stickiness, I set the mount on top of a sticky pad used for cell phone so it won't move during hard/sudden turns. I'll try it out and report to you.

Beanbag is great

I've been using the bean bag mount for a year, and think it is a great solution - have had no issues with it at all. Have never had it move any during driving.

I am sure that the beanbag works great for some, just sorta scared that my window will be open while I am going around a curve at 110mph...lol (and I usually travel alone, so there is noone to catch it before it hits the pavement).

rhamona is rhight :)

rhamona is right, our C340's aren't able to use the bean bag. The friction mount is available at Wal-Mart and Amazon for about $32. Seems when we buy these units they ought to be able to be stay on a windshield, considering the main point of the product is to show (and sometimes tell) you directions.

Mine C340 will stick and hold just fine to my passenger door window, but eventually falls off my windshield. Go figure.

The beanbag mount works

The beanbag mount works pretty well with my iQue 3600, but with the universal pda mount it the center of gravity was too far forward so it doesn't work well with it.

A great addition to the beanbag mount

I have been using a beanbag mount for 4 years with my StreetPilot and now a Nuvi 650. I had rare slides with the mount until I got one of those little 6x4 inch dashboard mats from RadioShack. They are meant to keep cellphones and sunglasses on the dash but I have found they keep the beanbag mount from ever sliding. I have seen them for about US$5 at RadioShack and Walmart. I kept the case it came with and take it with me when moving the GPS to other cars. It is especially helpful for dashes that have heavily treated with ArmorAll.

I am also using the beanbag mount. I had the beanbag fly off the dashboard under heavy acceleration so the dashboard mat sounds like a good idea. I checked the Radio Shack webpage and was unable to find the mat. By any chance does anyone have the Radio Shck catalog number? Or is it only available in the store.

The mat I got is available at: http://www.handstands.com/retail/automotive-accessories/stic...

A Google search for "handstands sticky pad" will also show other places it is available.

Try the Friction Mount

I love the friction mount for my c330: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1232

Much better for windshield visibility. You'll find your best prices on Ebay. I love mine. Very stable.

Garmin Portable Friction Mount

I got mine from TigerGPS.com and I love it. I can put it anywhere on my dash and it does not move. I also have put it on the console and it works great there too.

Beanbag is great!

Well, at least for my Streetpilot 2820 which seems to be designed with the beanbag in mind (short, fat, low center of gravity).

Moving the unit between cars is a breeze. I have made panic stops and the unit stays in place.

The beanbag was one of the factors in my decision to buy that model.

This is what I bought

I bought the friction mount. The beanbag thingie doesn't work for my c340.

Beanbag Mount

The beanbag was working for me over the past few months without sliding around. The problem that just came up is the cradle connection (female) is no longer holding to the male connection of the mount. It seems a couple little pieces of plastic broke off of the half spherical connection. I have e-mailed Garmin to see if I can get a replacement under warranty. For those beanbag users of over a year, do you pop it in and out when you take it out of the car?

Thanks,

Yes

Yes, I pop mine off and on quite a bit since I use in my truck and motorcycle so every time I change rides I pop it off plus when I stop at a store or something I pop if off and stick in my saddlebag and then pop it back on when I come out............seems to work fine after all them pops..........so far anyhow.........Dave

bean bag GOOD PRICE!

I just purchased one from ERWINCOMP.com under 30. 00 with free shipping for my c530. They are GREAT people to do business with.I also love the bean bag, I have tried all the mounts and this bag works the best for me.
Thanks, Joe.

I actually adapted my Garmin

I actually adapted my Garmin Beanbag to hold my Magellan 4040 by ordering a couple of ram-mount parts to go with it. Works great!

Beanbag and Zumo

Maybe this is a dumb question, or has been answered already. Can someone tell me if the beanbag works with the Zumo? I am wondering, because if the Zumo is not in the OEM cradle how does the sound get emitted? The OEM cradle has a built-in speaker.

How to adapt the beanbag

I would like to mount my magellan 4040 with the bean bag. What ram mount parts did you use?

What about the Garmin Friction Mount?

Hi,

Sorry to go a little bit off topic here. I'm curious to know if anyone is using the Garmin Friction Mount: Model 010-10908-00.

I'm interested in this one because it doesn't seem to require any installation or require sticking anything to your dashboard. I would like to have something that I could bring with me in case I need to use my GPS when I travel. But it seems a little bit bulky and heavy.

I'm not sure if this mount will move when I make turns and that is why I'm asking if anyone used this one before.

Garmin has another mount listed: Model 010-10306-00 which they say is the bean bag mount. Is this the one you guys are talking about? How would you mount your GPS to the beanbag? In my case, it's the Nuvi 350. Someone mentioned that you would need to stick it to your dashboard. But Garmin mentions that no installation is required here.

Could someone please clarify.
Thanks!

Adapting beanbag to Magellan 4040

Here are some pix

You need one 1.75 inch arm
RAM-B-201U-A
And 2 Round 2.5' dia Plate with 1' Ball
RAM-B-202U
You'll also need some screws and nuts from your local hardware store. I got my ram parts from gpscity.com

You can also order the heavy dash mount from a place called mountguys.com for the Maestro
Part # RAP-B-168-MAESTRO for $34.95 + shipping. This is basically the same idea as the beanbag mount and it is heavier.

They both work but I found the beanbag conforms to my oddly shaped dash a little better.

Either way costs about the same.

Friction Mount Issue

I considered the friction mount earlier this week when I decided to heed everyone's advice and keep the nuvi off my windshield.

I decided against the friction mount because it would interfere with the SRS airbag, and putting it on the passenger seat or center console requires too much of a look away from the windshield.

I decided to mount the disk down under my radio, in a cubbie and use the suction cup mount down there. It isn't as good as on the windshield, but can still be viewed with only a quick glance.

I've been driving with

I've been driving with beanbag mount for 3+ years and the bag has never moved, even in panic stopping condition. Highly recommend that.

Suction mount, however, have failed me numerous times. Sometime, the suction cup just become dried and fall off with out warning. Almost broke my gps screen.

Friction Mount nfor Nuvi 350

Hobby,

I have been using the 010-10908-00 friction "bean bag" mount with my Nuvi 350 for several months and I can tell you it works great! It's complete and needs no other parts to install. The nice feature is that it can be transferred from car to car. And it doesn't require gluing something permanently to the dash to hold it. There is no installation with it. You simply place it on the dash and it has a friction surface and the right to keeps it in place. I have never had it come off, but I'm sure in panic maneuver it might. But in normal sensible driving (not taking corners at high speeds which just wears down the tires to boot!) it's fine.

The Garmin "beanbag" is one

The Garmin "beanbag" is one of the best solutions. To help keep it on the dashboard, just buy of removable double-sided sticky tape (purchasable at all office supply stores or hobby shops) and put that under the beanbag. Doesn't damage the dash and holds very securely.

Beanbag/Friction Mount...

This is the greatest! I only wish I would have had one of these things from the beginning!

I did use the dental floss idea to get the other mount from it's deadly grip on my dash, it worked very well. You can use this on virtually any dash, and it really stays put!

Garmin Friction Mount: Model 010-10908-00 with Nuvi 660

I am using subject mount with Garmin 660 and have been totally pleased. You use the cradle that came with the windshield mount with the GPS unit. The friction beanbag mount then mates into the cradle with the same ball and socket mating system. It seems to be totally stable on my dash, but I am a very gentle driver. Can't comment on performance with high speed turns, rapid accelerations or hard breaking.

The feature that sold me is the ease in totally removing from view to deter theft, and to move to a second vehicle.

So far, this has been a great product. Good price and free shipping on Amazon, too.

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I went to Bestbuy to take a look at it over the weekend. It seemed kind of heavy enough so that it won't slide around on the dash board. Can you tell me if you can separate the ball mounting part from the base? I asked the sales rep at the store and he wasn't sure. All he could tell me is that you can turn the mounting part. It would be easier to pack and stuff in a suit case if the parts come apart when traveling.

I also got confused a little bit...is this considered a bean bag mount?

Mount

One thing to be cautious about: I just flew into Heathrow and this was near my Phone cords and other 'wires' and so they asked me to open my bag..So lesson learned just make sure it's not on top of or near the Bean Bag mount..

It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes nothing remains quite the same. With all of our running and all of our cunning, If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.

Take a look at these pictures

gpsmagazine.com currently has several pictures of the beanbag mount on their front page. The pictures will show you exactly how the unit comes apart.

Can You Separate the Parts

The "gooseneck" mount separates from the bean bag on the mount I use with my 680 (quick release lever).

I use a suction mount for my vehicles at home, but carry the beanbag to use in rental cars - works great.

Also, If you're traveling by air, I'd recommend packing the bean bag near the top of your bag if you're using a carry-on. I've had several instances where security wanted to check my bag after going through the X-ray machine. The beanbag isn't something some of the X-ray operators are used to seeing and evidently the density causes them some concern.

Great reference!!

Thanks! I didn't know about that site. The pictures answered all my questions!

beanbag mount

Yes it works great. I had an old mount from a Garmin 2720 and removed the 2720 attachment and replaced it with one of my wife's mirrors. I now attach the window mount of my Nuvi 680 to the mirror on the beanbag and it works great. I'm in Minnesota on a trip and they don't allow any suction cup on the windsheild. Thus the beanbag is the only way. I find it much better as you can just put the bag and the whole thing on the floor when you park without fussing with removing the suction cup from the windsheild. I alweays take the GPS with me.
