1490LMT Proximity Points

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Garmin 1490LMT and this is my first time using custom POIs, proximity alerts, etc. I am an advanced computer user. However, I am stumped here. I've been researching on/off for days, but am finally giving in to ask for help.

I downloaded the Esso (Canada) POI file (.csv) and renamed it Esso_Redlight.csv. I uploaded it to the GPS via POI Loader in "Express" mode. I can see all the Esso POIs in Extras-Custom POIs. However, when I drive by the 2 closest stations (which are listed correctly in terms of location in the POI file), I get no alert (audible or visual). I don't get an alert when I simulate a route either.

The alerts are turned on in Tools-Settings-Proximity Alerts (Custom POIs is checked).

Can you help? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Run poiloader in the manual

Run poiloader in the manual mode and set a distance you want the alert for in ft. The word red light will default at 1/4 mile when using express mode. Did you drive by within 50 to 75 ft of the coordinate location?Put coordinates in Google Maps and verify the location.

To get voice alert see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

I assume that you have read the Help file for POILoader and are thinking that the following rule will apply.
"If the file name contains "redlight", POI Loader assumes all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles."

Since loading the "Redlight-Cameras.csv" from poi-factory in "Express" mode results in my getting alerts at 1/4 mile, I do not understand why your alerts for Esso are not working. Maybe someone else has an idea.

Welcome to the site. I maintain the Esso file and I will state it is as received from the Exxon website with a few changes. The coordinates in the file are those provided by Exxon and are not verified by me for accuracy. Now, another caution about the alerts, yes the keyword redlight does give a 400 m alert, but the coordinates have to be within about 20 meters of your route of travel. So, if the coordinates are on the building and it's set back from the roadway more than 20 meters the only time the GPS will alert is when you pull in.

One other thing you can try - and I recommend that you only try it is to add an additional key word - TourGuide so the name is TourGuide_Esso_Redlight.csv This changes the alert from an "along the route" to a radius so any time you are within 400 meters of a station itwill alert. TourGuide has to be spelled exactly as shown -upper case T and G or it doesn't work.

Thanks everyone. I am now making some progress. Indeed, the issue is that the POI coordinates are over ~20 metres from the roadway. They were not being triggered when I drove past. I edited the coordinates for the closest station, simulated the route, and got the alert(s).

I tried adding the TourGuide option, but when added my proximity alerts disappeared altogether (no more Tools-Settings-Proximity Alerts icon). Should TourGuide work on the 1490? I wonder if this is a MP3/WAV (SOX.exe usage) issue. Thoughts?

Thanks again!

Yes TourGuide will work.

Yes TourGuide will work. When using TourGuide in the file name it will not show. That is normal. Alert along the road alert will show the proximity alert before you hit go. TourGuide in the file name will not but you will get the alert. If you decide to put a voice alert with it. You will to need to name the wav file the same as the csv file with TourGuide in the file name. Plus you will need the sox.exe in the folder where the poloader file is locate on your computer. The link I provided before has the instructions. Keep in mind TourGuide will give you a radius alert and by using poiloader in the manual mode you can increase the range. You also need the voice (wav) file for TourGuide to work. Your unit does not play mp3 files

TourGuide Esso.csv
TourGuide Esso.wav

Using TourGuide

WalmartTourGuide.bmp
WalmartTourGuide.wav
WalmartTourGuide.gpx

I load the file in Extra POI Editor.
Using the edit function>Replace Field>Proximity
I enter a value of 700 feet. (For me)
Save as a gpx file.
Run POI Loader in express mode.

Edit: Charlie types faster than I.

Got it

Bingo! I did not realize that I needed the voice file for TourGuide to work. I was expecting a visual alert without the voice file.

Looks like I've got some tinkering to do, but that I am all set. (I found a .wav file to try, copied the sox.exe file, and it's working now.)

Thanks again to you all--wonderful group of fellow users.

Glad you are off and running

Glad you are off and running now. The wav files add that extra touch to your custom pois.
