Garmin 2360 Setting

Which is the best setting to use, Faster Time or Shorter Distance? Lately when using my unit it appears to shows unusual routes, on a trip that I take often, coming home it wanted me to take a route that I have never seen before, and it was not a good one. Do I need to set the unit back to the default setting? (I have installed the most updated maps)

I second.

Choose the fastest, unless you want a scenic and potentially unpredictable route (which can be fun if you have the time and spirit of adventure). I did this once before in the winter, got a bit nervous when Karen told me to make a left onto Ski Slope Rd... grin

Sometimes I find none of the chosen routes are the best.

On my 2460 I am disappoinetd with the routing on a trip I make several times a year. From Long Island NY to Jim Thorpe PA.

Whatever route I choose, fastest, shortest, or less fuel, all take me on the same route that I don't want to take. They put me on Interstae I78 west, I want to go on I80, the highways run parallel with I78 being to the south, and I80 to the North.

In order to go the I80 route I had to go into Trip Planner and create the route I wanted.

Nice feature of the 2360 & 2460 is that you can change the settings in the navigation screen to "Prompt". This enables you eassily make a choice of fastest, shortest, and less fuel before it calculates. Once you let it calculate, you can choose to let it display the route you've chosen.
This is how I discovered all three modes took me on I78.

GPS's are great devices but common sense is required.
I like the Toshiba commercial where the car goes off the cliff following GPS directions and the Allstate Insurance recalulating crash.
Although they all have flaws, I still apprecite the fact the technology is available.

I'm all for it!

Seriously though, as the previous poster said, it is necessary to use a bit of sense.

Curious, does Google Maps offer an I80 route option or does it have the same issue as the garmin?

Google Is The Same

Google offers two routes, both using I78.
One going through lower NYC streets and through Holland Tunnel to New Jersey, the other over Verrazano bridge to Staten Island then to New Jersey.
I hate both routes, I prefer to use the George Washington Bridge to I80.
I also have a friend right off I80 in New Jersey that I sometimes stop and see on the way to PA.

The George Washinton can be a nightmare but I plan my trips accordingly to avoid the heavy traffic.
The 2460 shows all three routes the same, doesn't show the Verrazano Bridge route.

Avoiding The Turnip Patch

Thanks and I agree with you on the technology in the GPS, it would be hard to revert back to the old paper maps.

Best Route Options

I didn't know the unit had this feature, I guess I should read the online manual. I think the prompt feature will help.
thanks

Best Route Options

My 3790lmt has the prompt and I use it all the time.

Faster time works for me. I

Faster time works for me. I tried shorter distance once, and I was directed a funky route going through alleys. So I switched back to faster time.

Best Route Options

Thanks for your input on this. I’m not really big on reading the owner manual when I can get the best information from this site.

Manual & Websites

I think the operators manual are only useful for a general understanding of the GPS's features. Most of the time they cover a entire series and don't provide enough details for a specific model.

I do feel everyone should download the operators manual though, you don't need to print it, just store it on your computer and reference it when necessary.

That's why it's best to join forums such as POI Factory to learn so many useful tips and tricks to have your unit work more efficiently and provide answers to any questions you may have. It's wise to do a search first, since many times the issue may have already been discussed.
