Help! Having trouble loading update Garmin 2012.3

I started the map update on my 765T with my lifetime map update. It had a problem using the Garmin lifetime map updater and it stopped loading and gave an error near the end of the loading. I resorted to the manual option on the Garmin site for updating maps. I am getting an error saying there is not enough room on the 765 to install US and Canada maps. I tried several things. One of them was temporarily moving the file gmapsupp.img off the gps to get enough room for the install. I then installed a smaller part of the US maps then copied the gmapsupp.img back to the gps. Doing this did not help in getting US and Canada loaded. I have 350 meg left on the gps now and about 2.5 gig left on the SD card. I need US and Canada maps to be on the gps since I have an upcoming trip to Alaska.
Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I have never been able to get the Garmin Lifetime Map Updater to do a successful update even before this happened.

Forget to add to the post

I meant to also say that I have already deleted all the voice and help files that I would not be using to free up space.

I know on my 680 I had to

I know on my 680 I had to remove absolutely everything and deselect part of the maps. I just have a single TTS voice installed, no basemap at all and I had to deselect several parts of the map, maybe even part of Canada (can't remember).

If nothing else works you can try doing the trick of putting 2 maps on the SD card. you can rename the second one gmapprom.img and some units support the name gmapsupp2.img

Never had an issue with my 765t

I also removed all extra voices and icons I will never use and have never had an issue downloading the map updates. All my poi's are on a sd card and I do manual updates

just..

just back up your old maps and reload maps thru garmin.com. I actually use mapsource to load my maps.

I think I have figured it out

On the Garmin site, I found there are two different types of Garmin image files. One if them is the one created by the Lifetime updater (when Lifetime updater failed to finish due to an error) and one is the one that was created by using the manual method of updating maps. I had both and it appears only one is used. I took the gmapsupp.img off the gps. It was almost 1.5 gig. I reloaded the North American maps and it appears all is ok now. I have an upcoming 2000 mile trip in about a week so I hope this has fixed the Garmin.
