Create or edit your own POI's

Hi All,

This may be old news for many, but as a newbie to creating POI files, this site allows me to create or edit my own POI files.
http://www.poieditor.com/

I was looking for a cousins address in Florida, on my Nuvi 670. Long story short, the street name was a bust, every time I tried to enter it.

I found http://www.poieditor.com/ and with a few clicks was able to locate the street I was looking for and then was able to name it and load it into my Nuvi.

It's a very simple interface and allows you to create your own POI's or add to a POI to an existing POI on your GPS.

If you haven't heard about this site, check it out...

Regards,

tailspin

pain in the &##^

Isn't there a stand alone utiltiy to create POI's from a way point?

Garmin has gdb files that contain the waypoints that I would like to make into POI's

Don't tell me that you have to manually put in dozens of POIs by hand and risk making mistakes?

Thanks in advance

Joe

entering data into POI editor ????

Another issue that I am having trouble with is:

No matter how I enter long and lat either in the upper box or the lower box's at http://www.poieditor.com/

they are converted into incorrect long lat in either the upper or lower box's

I am trying to enter
N32 42.958 W114 43.848

Without the N and W of course using the check boxes to signify this info.

TIA

Joe

.

First of all, Garmin considers Custom POIs to be basically a third-party item. They provide the software to load them and the firmware that accepts them, but the creation of the Custom POIs isn't something they get into directly.

That's how we all ended up here!! smile

Having said that, if you have MapSource, you can save your waypoints file as a gpx and then load it to your GPSr as Custom POIs.

If you don't have MapSource, you can use any number of third-party software programs to make gpx files. (EasyGPS works well.)

So if you have a gdb file, simply open it, make whatever changes you need, save it as a gpx, and there you go!!

poieditor

Happy to report that poieditor.com will now work with decimal coords such as Tittiger's N32 42.958 W114 43.848 (enter these into the bottom boxes, deg and mins only, leave seconds blank)

The site is still work in progress, I'm still adding more features when I find time.

Thanks

Hi everyone - great site! I

Hi everyone - great site!

I was wondering if there's an off-line POI creator/editor, or if the poieditor.com is all that's available?

Or can you make them through excel or is that just to view them, really?

Thanks for the info and the great site that puts all of this stuff together!

.

Take a look at the "faqs & help" page. There is a link at the top of each page.

http://www.poi-factory.com/faq

You don't need special software to create POI files. They can be created in Excel or in Notepad.

The best way to find out the correct format is to download a file and take a look at it in both Notepad and in Excel.

The basic format is

longitude1,latitude1,name1,description1 (optional)
longitude2,latitude2,name2,description2 (optional)
etc.

Be sure to save as a CSV.

Also check My Locations

Also check My Locations on this site, listed under your name.

Great, thanks for the replies.

I thought they might be editable in Excel after I opened a few, but for some reason that just seemed too easy!

Good to know, thanks again for the quick replies.

I actually thought of one

I actually thought of one more question for any of you about creation of POI's:

Do you need the lat/long or is there a way to import POIs based on their physical address? Also can you add the phone number somehow so that you can dial through the Bluetooth connection?

Thanks a lot. Sorry if this is answered in the FAQ, I haven't been able to check it yet but I plan on it when I get home from work and have some time to read it.

POI Files need coordinates

And you can get those by geocoding addresses. Just put "geocoding" in the search box up at the top of the page here (without the quotes...) and you'll find probably more than you want to know. smile

And if you want to make phone numbers work, the search term would be "dialable"...

Lat/Long is required

You can obtain that information from several sources, i.e. google earth, gpsvisualizer, etc. Do a search on this site after you review the FAQs and Getting Started. Yes, you can add phone numbers, particularly if you create a .gpx file. Search for user "Hornbyp" to see posts on how to do it.

Hey thanks a lot for the info guys.

This is obviously a great resource for everything POI and I'm glad I found the place.

I'd be more than happy to contribute $5/10 but I'm not sure where to do that? The FAQ mentions posting regularly to become active, which I plan on anyway, but it doesn't specify where to PayPal donations or anything under the "How do I become an active member?" question.

Am I missing a link somewhere or something? As an added suggestion, a "Make a Donation" link at the top by "Getting Started" and the other links might be helpful.

if you go to the red light

if you go to the red light camera page you can get to paypal from there;) Thanks for pointing out the flaw in our system, we will have a meeting on that today and find a solution to make it easier to find the checkout feature.

However not all Garmin

However not all Garmin Navigation devices accept GPX files. I have a Kenwood DNX9960 unit. The Navigation is all Garmin software & Data. It allows for custom POI's using Garmin's POI uploader (To an SD card) which requires .CSV files.

Is their a way to convert GPX files to CSV?

TGC

You can download Extra Poi

You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and load the csv file to it and save as a gpx file.

Also http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input will convert a file.
