nuvi 265 WT help please

I read on several web sites that the nuvi 265 is compatible with TourGuide POIs. When I use the TourGuide in the name of a csv nuvi does nothing when I approach nothing when I approach a POI. I downloaded the Tim Horton's POI csv from here and can see the POIs when I touch Where To - Extras.
I changed the name of pg_Redlight.csv to pg_TourGuide.csv and the warning when I approach 'pg' doesn't beep anymore.
Does the 265 WT support TourGuide and wav or mp3s?

Yes, it does support TourGuide

First off, welcome to the site.

There are several FAQs and tutorials here on the site for loading files, TourGuide or others. Have you looked at those?

Were your POI alerting before? How did you load them using POI Loader? Did you set an alert distance using Manual Mode or let it default to the 400 meter distance?

Your 265 uses wav files, this requires SOX.exe be located in the same folder/directory where the POILoader.exe file is on your computer. Do you have SOX and is it the correct version? You also need to have alerts enabled within your Nuvi settings. Have you done this?

Here's a couple of links to get you started.

What version of sox will that download? Note that POI Loader requires an older sox.exe. I strongly suggest getting the file (and a handy instruction page) from here at The Factory:

You might want to change your nick to "SOX". I'm not sure how many 100's of times you have told people in here including Me, when poi loader doesn't work it's because the sox file is missing. You are definitely the SOX man. laugh out loud

Thank you

That's what we want. If he can't find his way out it's better for all of us. He might get really lost and then wouldn't find his way back here. Lets just keep him in the Laundry Room. razz

PS: Can we get JM to arbitrarily change his nick to Sox Car? laugh out loud

Sox Version

Reply to CraigW: For sure it's a working version from my computer running XP with latest version of POI Loader. Because I uploaded directly from my Garmin POI Loader folder. I don't really know the version number.

Right-click

Right-click on SOX.EXE and select Properties. In one of the tabs you should find the version number.

Did this work for you?

Strephon_Alkhalikoi wrote:

When I do this (on my Win XP machine), I did not get any info.

SOX doesn't have version info

I didn't check it myself until you asked. SOX.EXE doesn't have version information embedded in the file, which means you have to rely on the file creation date (1/29/08) to make sure you get the right one. However, if a file does have the information, e.g. DIVX PLUS PLAYER.EXE, right-clicking on the file, selecting properties, then selecting the details tab should give you the information you need.

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome, I am a senior member of a poker forum and always welcome new members so I do appreciate the welcome here.
I have owned my nuvi for almost 3 years now and only last week started looking into what else I can do with it because I didn't want to pay for map updates. I used OSM and started reading about custom POIs and the things we can do with them.
My POIS...
I downloaded a csv off this site for Tim Hortons (a coffee chain in Canada because I am addicted to coffee). I used POI Loader and set it to Manual and set my proximity accordingly. The Redlight alerts work properly (no wav file attached), the TourGuide did not. However, sox.exe was not used (or copied to the POI Loader directory. As soon as I get home I will try with sox.exe
As a newbie to tinkering with my nuvi, I am all ears to the rest of you for favorite ideas.
Thanks guys (and thabks mr. sox)

Welcome. In order to use

Welcome. In order to use TourGuide you must have a sound file. We determined that on another post. Your nuvi uses wav files and not mp3.

Your file setup should be like this:

Tim Hortons TourGuide.csv
Tim Hortons TourGuide.wav
Tim Hortons TourGuide.bmp

TourGuide can be anywhere in the name EXCEPT it must be spelled exactly the way I have show. You can leave the icon (bmp) out if you wish.

Happy!

The sox.exe worked. I now hear a cup of hot coffee pouring when I approach a Tims. Thank you gentlemen!

Well done!

That was a quick fix.

As you probably know, down in the States there's a bit of a connection between donuts and US Law Enforcement folks. One morning while visiting Whitehorse YT, I stopped in a Tim Horton's for a donut and coffee--and found myself in line behind about five RCMP constables. So I guess it's a North American tradition if we can confirm that Mexican police do the same.

As Craigw said.

Well done!!

Go Old School ... DOS

Edit: In reference to sox.exe version questions above.

Create a txt file called sox_ver.bat. Edit the file and add the following 2 lines.

sox --version
pause

save the file to the same directory/folder as your POILoader.exe and sox.exe files. Then click/run the sox_ver.bat file and it will give you the version number.

It should be v14.0.1.

Great tip, my version did show 14.0.1 in a Dos screen.

Does this work on other .exe files that don't display the version?
Of course substituting the programs name for "sox".

Would look like this
programX --version
pause

Save as: "programx_version.bat"

Nope

This only works for SOX.EXE because the --version switch after the command is programmed into the SOX program itself. Other programs may have similiar command line switches but you don't know until you experiment with them.

In the old days it was kind of custom to type a command followed by /? switch to see if it had any built in command line switch help.

EDIT?: run the bat file above without the --version , it will sow you all of its help for its command line switches.

Interesting information. Having not used DOS in so long it's still a tool that can be used with current technology.

*Tongue firmly in cheek*

The computer illiterate would have fun with DOS.

"Format C: /y. Ok now where is Windows?"

Don't get me wrong. DOS is an extremely powerful tool and even in this age of graphical user interfaces is still tremendously useful. I still use it myself. But there are people on this site and that visit this site that barely know how to turn on their computer. This advice, as good as it is, may spur them on to learn more about their computers, but could just as easily cause these people to totally wipe their hard drives. wink

On a serious note, I'm ashamed at myself for not thinking of using DOS. Good advice bear.

He needed about 300 file's extensions renamed. He was sitting there with his mouse right clicking and changing them one by one for about 30 minutes. I opened a DOS windows and did it with one command in 10 seconds. Command line rocks!

Hehe

Hehe.

ren *.dbf *.db

The true power of DOS is in its batch files, though the single commands are pretty powerful in and of themselves. grin
