275T question on future restore of deleted text and help files

smile

Hi, so as you probably figured I deleted in past some unneeded files like Vehicles, Voices, Text and Help files.

However it occurred to me that if I ever wanted to restore it to full factory state (with just updated firmware and maps) then I won't have the Text and Help files that I deleted smile

I see that WebUpdater allows to re-download Vehicle and Voice files, but not the Text & Help language files.

can anybody link a backup file of those on the web?

Thanks smile

BTW: is it possible to sell Garmin device and transfer the ownership to another Garmin user? or I'm stuck with it until the end? wink

backup, backup, backup

I don't know how many times that has been preached, proclaimed and stressed. Before deleting any files you should always back them up first.

As to being able to transfer ownership, you can remove the registration info from Garmin, either through the web or by calling them and providing verification information. The new owner can then register the unit under their name - and no, lifetime maps do not transfer to the new owner.

Transfer Ownership

I'm not certain about the help files but I would think they are in the firmware. reinstalling the firmware may bring them back, make sure you battery is fully charged before doing so.

Hopefully someone else can chime in on that and offer better advice.

As for transferring ownership, it's quite simple.
If the Nuvi is registered in your name, you just need to sign on your account, click on "view your registered products", select "details" for the 275T, then choose "delete registration".

Without it being registered now, a new owner can register the unit in his\her name.

The lifetime maps cannot be transferred to a new owner. The traffic is not a problem since the subscriptions are in the receiver, not the Nuvi, so it will continue to work.

P.S. Sorry for some of the duplicate information, as I was typing Box Car already replied.

Help files have their own

Help files have their own directory. Each language appears in a subdirectory in that directory. The same thing goes for the EULA.

On a side note I've actually dug into the help directory and deleted sections that were not relevant to my device. Each section has its own file so it was easy to do. However I don't recommend it without backing up first.

gotcha

yeah, I know I should have backed the files ... well I was careless hehe, happens sometimes, I assumed those files are pretty easy to restore, was surprised when I didn't find them in Garmin WebUpdater though smile

I will see after next firmware update if they come back (Help files).

do you know if the Text language files are restored when corresponding Voice language file gets restored via WebUpdater? or that would be a firmware content too? or neither of them?

next time, I will make a copy of files about to erase to on my PC and problem will be no more.

Thanks guys on info with transferring the ownership. it clears things up, thanks again! smile

can any 275 user provide backup of Text & Help files?

just in case, the firmware reload doesn't restore all my files for me ... could any 275 user provide me with a backup of their Text and Help folders?

or if anybody could confirm that reloading current firmware actually restores those files in mentioned folders, I would be grateful.

Thanks.

The web updater wil get all that junk back for you

Frank, MA.

no it does not

no, it does not restore Text and Help language files.

on the list of things I see only Vehicle and Voice files.
restoring a specific language Voice file downloads just that, not the corresponding language Text and Help file.

However I am actually about to reload the firmware to see if it helps soon. Just need to move the second (EU) map from device to PC to make space for full firmware and need to remove POI files.

I think I will move the second (EU) map to SD card and restore device to "normal" condition with US map only and all the Text, Help, Vehicle and Voice files just for kicks.

Try Garmin Dashboard. You

Try Garmin Dashboard. You will find it in your My Garmin page.'

Charlie. Nuvi 265 WT and Nuvi 2597 LMT. MapFactor Navigator - Offline Maps & GPS.

nothing like that in there either

I've been to there already. there is no downloads of anything like that anywhere. Dashboard says the software is up to date and I see no option to re-download any language specific files...

It must have changed then.

It must have changed then. Has been a while since I used it. Had deleted help files, voices and etc on my GPS. Ran it and everything was reinstalled. That is why I don't use it any more because it doesn't give option of what to install.

.

yeah, they must have changed it since then.

I will try reloading the firmware and go from there.

reloading firmware

Reloading the firmware probably won't restore them either as what you are reloading is the internal software. You really need to find someone with the same series unit (hint: check the quick start booklet to see which models it's written for) to send you the files. I doubt my 885 files would work properly on the 275 as the units use different operating systems.

got a few options to try

dang. not a good news then. I haven't started the re-flash yet, as it is taking ages to move the EU map (2.2GB) out of there first...

will try the reflash anyways, can't hurt, right? smile

I think the software files are same for 265 & 275 models (maybe whole 2x5 series is same), but I will double check.

EDIT:
275T Quick Start was written for "205 series". however I don't know how different other 2x5 models were, I think the 265 is the closest one (single pre-loaded map unit while 275 was dual preloaded map).

Other option that comes to my mind is to contact Garmin and get the file location on their servers from them - they should have a full copy of it.

after all I just followed one of their official tutorials on getting more space on unit before map/firmware update. and now what? they have no tutorial on restoring missing files that were deleted, kinda dumb approach...

fw reload didn't touch the language files

just did the firmware reload and loaded ALL updates from WebUpdater. still missing the language files for Text (and Keyboard) and Help files ...

I guess I will contact Garmin, and in meantime I am searching for another 275T user smile

I am willing to give a shot to TEXT and HELP files coming from 265 unit too... what a Royal PITA!

Backup

It is recommended that EVERYONE do a backup as soon as possible after getting any unit.

Maybe someone else reading this post has not done so and will now be encouraged to do so.

Backup

Guess I need to learn how.

I hate when Garmin changes the rules of the game unnoticed

I was under impression (as mentioned above) that restoring my missing files is more like bound to happen if I want it or not when using Software Updater on myGarmin Pgae and could also be done manually when using WebUpdater ... it made even more sense this way when I noticed OFFICIAL Garmin tutorials on DELETING those unneeded files from many folders to get more working space on device ... hmmmm ...

lived to learn the lesson, now when I wanted it to actually happen, both options are gone ... LOL smile that's my kind of luck haha!

Garmin haven't replied to my support case yet... maybe I should give them a call...

from other news. I moved the EU map to SD card and it works as a supplemental map just fine (device loads it upon startup correctly), so now I have PLENTY of free space on the unit LOL ...

any Garmin 265 users willing to send me backup of their full TEXT and HELP folders?

--
Garmin nuvi 2595LMT; Android 5.0 (Samsung GS3)

honestly I need a copy of those files

is there any 265 or 275 owner reading this thread who is willing to send me a copy of mentioned files?

all it takes is to copy the untouched TEXT and HELP folders from the device to PC (over the USB cable) and zip them into an archive ...

please send me a PM if you can help, thanks.

if it doesn't fit the email I can provide an FTP site for upload (so I can take it from there) ...

It seems this is my last option here to get them back.

Garmin says there is NO WAY to get a copy of files from them

god, I'm so pissed... Just called Garmin tech Support and after waiting for half an hour I learned from a technician a simple and sad truth.
"if WebUpdater doesn't show the files for download (as missing TEXT or VOICE or any other files) then they are not available and there is NO WAY to restore the missing files ever."

so I asked 2 simple things:
a) why there is no notice in official Garmin tutorial that files once deleted are gone forever (if WebUpdater doesn't detect such downloads)?

There should be a huge notice in red saying "Watch out, what you delete you most likely will never be able to get back"!

The lady on the phone said only she would pass a suggestion to Knowledge Base writers to add such warning notice in there...

b) how does Garmin restore "faulty" devices with missing files under warranty?
Sounds like an eaqsy fix, just copy the missing "unimportant" files over and there you go.
I thought they must have a backup of every model's stock file system to get it back operational in their technical department.

The answer astonished me. She said they never repair anything, just replace the whole unit for a working one...

so much for getting the copy of my missing files from Garmin...

... so does ANYBODY with 265 or 275 unit have a backup of stock files in Text and Help folders?

@feniks - I sense your frustration, but I wonder whether or not it is justified.

You have not indicated that your 275T is giving you any problem at all, So, as long as you keep it, not having a backup of the deleted files should not be an issue. But, suppose you want to sell it. Would it not be likely that the person buying it would be happy with it "as is"? It seems like it would only become a problem if the person buying it were in another country and needed the deleted files.

How likely would it be that someone would even know any files were missing if the unit works for them?

potential buyer may need lang other than English

yup, that's my point, since the unit carries both North American & European maps, so I planned on selling it to anybody in those continents (e.g. on ebay platform) ... so I'd like to pre-load German, French, Italian, Spanish and other languages back in there. now it seems I cannot do it no matter what I do LOL!

and the lady in Garmin support kept saying that I don't need those files since I deleted them ... WTF ... who is she to tell me WHAT I NEED or WANT?

I'm aware that it's my fault as I could have copied the files before erasing them... but hell ... everybody was talking on many forums and threads that those "junk" files are easy to restore using WebUpdater ... well, not any longer.

it sucks actually. I'm really angry with Garmin ... and myself.
