POIs are a nice addition to my Garmin. Additionally I've benefited from helps and hacks when my old GPS was acting up or to change a battery.

8 Years and 51 weeks here too

I am almost at the nine years mark too.

I look upon my first Garmin, a Nuvi 360, as one of the two most life changing purchases I have made. The other purchase was our first TiVo.

Before Garmin we would have driving directions on paper from MapQuest. I think you could also use AAA. And of course you would use big paper maps. The person in the passenger seat in those days had a more active role in the navigation process. Missing a turn would cause major problems trying to get back on track.

With the Garmin you know you will get to your destinations even if you miss a turn or two. When planning a trip you can create a GPX file with the places you will be visiting.

Now on our third Garmin, a Nuvi 2699. The second was a Nuvi 1390.

The TiVo totally changed the way we watch TV. We can watch programs on our own schedule. Also being able to pause and rewind live TV is something you really miss when you don't have it.

Yup, both GPS and TiVo changed out lives! My wife took to TiVo the day I walked in the house with the box and we have had a DVR ever since. GPS was a different matter as she was always in charge of driving directions. However, on a trip to visit a relative in the wilds of WV we got lost and she could not figure out where we were. I pulled out the Delorme yellow box and placed it on the roof of the car and in about 5 mins. we had our location on the laptop screen. She accepted that it was of some use but has resented it ever since!

Seems like yesterday that I found this fantastic site. Back in the day, I would use the old trip-tik that AAA provided along with regular paper maps. My better half was never any good at reading maps, (she always had a problem with which way was north), so I would try to drive and navigate using the maps at hand. I would look a map over and then navigate from memory. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Then I got my first GPS; a StreetPilot c330. Then a Nuvi 350. Then a 3590 and a 3597. Life hasn't been the same since. My wife kind of tolerated Jill, but when Jack came along she fell in love all over again. Not with me, but with Jack. I haven't had the heart to separate them since that day. Oh well!

Back in The Day

In the late 60's and early 70's I would spend my vacation in Maine. Drive from Chapel Hill, NC to Bar Harbor, ME. The Trip-Tik basically said "Follow I-95 most of the way", could almost do it in my sleep. A few years ago did a similar trip, now we have to follow I-95, I-395, I-495, I-695, back to I-95, etc.. Dead easy with a 3597 but with a Trip-Tik?
