It Feels Strange

It feels strange to look at the screen and see that it shows seven years and four weeks.

I remember clearly that the first time that I looked at this thread I was thinking that 3 years was a LONG time in the future. It appears that I was wrong . . . smile

11 years for me

Got my first GPS in 2005. It was big fat brick with a small screen. Hard to believe it was a real luxury at the time. Upgraded to a Garmin 660 in 2007 In preparation for a cross country trip. It was a vital part of the trip.

Today, even though I have Apple CarPlay showing a beautiful 8" map in my car I still keep standalone GPS. It always works, I take it to new cities when traveling in a rental car, and keeps up with traffic issues better than the phone.

My guess is that the consumer GPS industry has matured to the point where it is a commodity, so this type of forum does not draw enthusiasts like it used to. That, plus the acceptance of smartphone navigation apps and built-in devices that don't accept custom POI's has caused some members to become inactive.

Many of the other GPS enthusiast forums have declined to the point where they only get a handful of posts a week. It is a tribute to JM, Globe Turtle and the active members that POI Factory has remained as popular and relevant as it is.

Agree.

My vehicles, for many years (except one exotic collector car), all have built-in GPSs.

The last time I used the Garmin was years ago as a double, for backup purposes and for RLCs and custom POIs on a long cross-country trip. It didn't take long before I just turned the Garmin off, put it back in the box and put it in the trunk where it stayed for the remainder of that trip. It's stored in the house...not in the car.

Personally, I would never consider buying a vehicle without a built-in GPS. I don't recall being in anyone's personal vehicle in the last few years that didn't have a built-in GPS.

Having a vehicle without built-in GPS nowadays is like using an old rotary dial telephone.

I enjoy visiting POI Factory to see what the members are talking about. And, since I have lifetime maps I always update the old Garmin when a new map is released 'just because'.

@alandb It would be nice if

@alandb

It would be nice if garmin developed a smartphone app with the same UI and capabilities as their PND's. I'm sure many of us would even be willing to pay a reasonable amount for it. They'd save mega $$$ in the hardware dept and android/iphone api's are relatively standard these days. Something like their street pilot app from half a decade ago.

Agreed.

I agree that Garmin should be in the smarphone navigation app market. They had a great start a few years ago with Viago, but sadly they discontinued it.
