Walmart POIs

It seems like every time I look ay my Favrite Files, I see another update for Walmart. Just how many stores can the build every week?

Walmart

I don't think the changes to the file are necessarily new stores. I think it is more tweaking & refining the information in the file for the existing entries.

Just my guess.

Walmart POI's

People are constantly sending updates to locations (fine tuning). I may be a block or 2 off so users give me better coordinates. I like coordinates for the front door of the store while a lot of coordinates are just to the street address which is not always accurate.

That is why I normally say what the update is so you have a choice of whether or not to download.

How many Walmart Stores?

I don't know how many there are, but I heard the other day that the USPS has more offices than McDonald's, Starbucks and Walmart stores combined.

Anybody out there want to do a Post Office POI file?

Regards,
Bill

Just sayin

I wanted a list of post offices, but only for mailing postcards when on vacation. Where to> Points of Interest> Community> Post Office gives an accurate list for around here and in Florida. In Florida even some contract stations were listed.

Driving Or Walking?

Those coordinates might look nice in Google Maps, but if the front door is ~200 yards from the Interstate and ~600 yards from the nearest entrance to the parking lot they can lead to some bizarre and very unhelpful driving directions.

30 meters

I did some testing (using my 765T) to show that 30 meters from the center of the route on which the GPS is traveling is the maximum perpendicular distance from the route at which an alert will sound. This is 98.4 feet so we often say that the maximum distance that the coordinates should be from the route is 100 feet.

To visualize how an alert you have established works, imagine a rectangle that is roughly 200 feet wide with a height of whatever distance you gave POILoader in manual mode. Imagine your vehicle on the bottom side of the rectangle at the center point on that bottom line. When the coordinates of a custom poi come within the top of the rectangle, the alert is triggered.

The GPS is smart enough to account for the fact that roads are not straight but curve from time to time. So, for our purposes the road can be considered essentially straight.

If the coordinates of a custom POI location does not come within this rectangular box, the alert will not sound.

That is why the advanced members of this site recommend that coordinates be set at that point at which someone would exit from the route into the parking lot of the custom POI location. That way - if someone wants an "alert along the route" it will sound at the specified prior distance (say 1000 feet) set in manual mode of POILoader.

If it were a personal file and one wanted to be taken directly to the door (or ticket office, say) of the custom POI location, then setting coordinates would be a matter of personal taste.
