2012.10 map update

When I start the mapupdater program to install the new map, it states that my computer does not have enough space for update and it requires 5 GB.

This has never happened before. Can anyone help.

FAQ

Darn, there's a FAQ for this but I can never find it.

First off, don't panic, this is a common issue and it can be cured easily.

The short answer is to--after making a backup of all your nuvi files to a computer--remove unneeded voice and help files. Assuming English is the only language you'll be using, with your nuvi USBed to your computer, navigate into the nuvi and look in the \garmin\help and \garmin\voices directories. Delete all voices you won't be using (knowing that you can always restore them in the future from your computer backup). The big files most advantageous to remove are voice files. To keep English, delete all the voices except American English, Jack/Jill, Karen/Lee, and Emily/Daniel, then delete all the non-English Help files, too.

This will give you more than enough room to install the full 2012.20 All North America to your nuvi.

Good luck and report back with results of your success--or request for further help.

[Edit] Whoops, I answered the wrong question. I'll keep the above for folks who need help with their nuvi. But your issue is your computer. What size hard drive is on your computer. How much free space is on the drive? If you're low on room (and Garmin suggests you are on your primary hard drive), are there items that can be deleted?

Yes, the map update download is about 2GB in size and during installation, something like 5-8GB of space is temporarily needed. At least Garmin checks and reports a problem before you start the update process rather than try to overfill your hard drive, resulting in a failed installation and possibly even an unusable computer.

thank you

I did as you said and it is now installing as we speak.

Can't find the map on my computer

when I installed the maps, I had them installed on my computer and 765t. But now I can't find the map on my computer. Any idea where Garmin would put it.

Mapsource

Assuming you're on a PC and not a mac, start the program Mapsource. Your maps, including the new 2012.20, should be usable there. If Mapsource doesn't have a desktop icon, look for it in your Start menu, probably in the Garmin folder. Good luck.

couldn't find it

but I am re-installing it on my computer.

Going round in circles

I did the update last night. After approx 5 hrs it finally finished and then a message came up saying that there had been an error in the install and to run the install again. I tried this and I got the "not enough memory" message. I disconnected the unit (1490LMT) and looked at the map info in the settings menu and it shows "CN North America NT 2012.20" which I think is the update. Now every time I connect the GPS to my computer Garmin’s life time map updater pops up and tells me that an update is available, I connect the unit and I get the "not enough memory" message. I have tried doing a smaller down load, just Canada or lower 49 states etc but it always says I do not have enough memory. I have deleted just about every file on the unit that is not used, voices, keyboards, help files and the only large file that seems to be left is the GPX archive folder. I have a total of 62.7MB of free space on the unit and am beginning to think that the next map update will be a washout. Any ideas on how to get the Life time updater to function properly or do I have to join the long line of customers on the Garmin help site. I have tried to do the download the old fashioned way but Garmin now insist on you installing the auto update program.

If the

If the Nuvi actually has 2012.20 on it then go into the Mapupdater program and delete the Nuvi from the list. Just click on the X icon beside the entry for your Nuvi.

Once deleted and with the Nuvi attached to your PC, go back into the Updater program and click on Add Device. This will register your Nuvi back into the program and hopefully clear message pop up.

If you only have 67.7MB of free space, you better start shopping for a SD card as your probably going to need it for the next version.

In the select download method, use option 2 and it'll download the old fashioned way.

Cheers

I have the 1490LMT and before I updated, I removed unused files (Voice, text, Help files, etc.) and I had 317MB of free space. Perhaps you are missing some files you can delete.

When I updated to 2012.10 I selected North America, got to 70% and got the "not enough memory message". I lost my junction views after that. When I upgraded to 2012.20 I selected lower 49 and it ran without error. I later added the 752mb Junction view to my microSD card.

Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT, Nuvi 750, Nuvi 255LT

thanks.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. As I said, I have nearly cleared every useless file of the unit. I do have a memory card installed and was thinking of doing the install on that. Will the unit “read” that file rather than the map that is installed on the unit or do I have to delete that one for it to look for any on the memory card. One other thing, can I delete the GPX archive folder?

That did the trick, cheers.

IT WORKED

In the select download method, use option 2 and it'll download the old fashioned way.

I did it using option 2 and it worked just fine, no "not enough memory" messages and it was quicker too, only just over 2 hours. I am going to uninstall theLifetime map updater and stick with "option 2" untill I see that they have ironed out all the bugs.
Thanks guys.
