Loading Streets & Trips onto Garmin Nuvi 255W?

Can anyone give me a hand with this please? I have the Garmin Nuvi 255W. I am going on a 9 day road trip across country so I kind of need to make sure I do this right! wink I have Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011, MapPoint 2011 as well as Microsoft AutoRoute 2011 installed on my computer. I spent a great deal of time mapping out my roadtrip in extreme details right down to where I'm stopping for gas at what time and for how long. surprised Now...the trip won't show up in the unit! sad I tried using GPSgate to detect the unit..nothing. I tried the trick of holding down the screen over the battery to get into the diagnostic screen then plugging it in. That does switch it into USB mode but when I click send to gps the files show that they are there but are not visible when I disconnect my garmin from the USB. I have also tried dragging the 2 trip files into the San Disk card as well as the internal memory, and I tried doing this using every file extension available to me with the software I have. Again, it shows its on the GPS on my computer but not when I unplug it. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!

sorry

The Garmin 255 doesn't accept routes. The best you can do is to load the stops as favorites by exporting them as a GPX file.

Even this will take some editing in order to get the planned stops to show in order.

You enter that day's destination and then add the stops one at a time as intermediate waypoints. It's tedious. What I did before I upgraded to a unit that did routes was to print the daily itineraries and kept them on a clipboard as strip maps my wife or I would follow as we traveled.

GPS Babel

You can also download GPS Babel (link below). It will convert Streets and Trips files to one of many formats. I usually convert them to .csv files. After the file is converted, I number the stops (1, 2, 3, etc) and sort on that field, then load the .csv file via POI Loader. You can then use that file to navigate by simply selecting the numbered stop as you would any other POI in a .csv file. Not the best way, but I, like you, have been unable to get Streets and Trips to load the route to my 765T.

@spullis

A couple of things may help you with downloading routes to the 765 from S&T:

1. You need to have S&T 2010 or higher (2011) in order to download the route to the Nuvi.

2. The download is actually a .gpx file and is done by selecting Data - Export to GPX file in the S&T menu system and directing the GPX file to the Nuvi internal storage drive and the GPX folder there.

3. Once the file has been sent to the Nuvi, before you can use the route, you need to go to Tools - MyData - Import Route(s), select the file you just sent to the Nuvi and IMPORT it. Once Imported you can select it using Where To - Route(s)

Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

Thanks...

Thanks much. This looks promising. I will have to play around with it more when I have time...for now it isn't cooperating...
gpsbabel -D2 -r -i msroute -f C:/Users/Lisa Marie/Desktop/florida trip down.est -o garmin -F usb:

Error running gpsbabel: Process crashed whle running

Right now I'm playing around with Google Maps as well as Bing maps because at one time I do remember sending a road trip out to Indiana onto this GPS unit. Can't remember exactly how I did it though :/

Ok, here is what you do. Grab your 255w and lookup your closest Best Buy or favorite computer store and drive there. Buy yourself a 10 inch netbook for just over $150.00. One with bluetooth would be good. Take it home and load all your map products on it. Plug in the external gps antenna that came with Streets and Trips (assuming you bought the package with receiver) and now you have a very good GPS system for less then most GPS. Streets and Trips has had features on it that most GPS still dont have. Use the bluetooth to pair with your phone to connect to the internet or cruise past the odd wifi hotspot to get updates every now and then. It may be a bit of a problem having a netbook on your dash if you are driving a small car and your passenger may not like you very much after holding it on their lap for several days so you may want to look into the purchase of a large truck smile But seriously, I have several GPS (old and new) and I still bring my netbook with Streets and Trips with me on cross country trips but dont use it while driving.

Enjoy your trip.

.

Might be an easier process overall to just purchase a different nuvi that accepts routes.
