How to Use Custom POIs?

I just loaded a bunch of custom POI files onto my micro SD card in the Nuvi 855, but want some very basic help on how to use them. For instance, with the file for Yellowstone Nat. Park, how would I use its many specific points versus what is built-in by Garmin? Can I somehow display all those custom points on the screen while travelling inside the Park? Or am I limited to searching my Garmin “Extra Files,” and selecting just single points at a time, as I drive thru the Park (which seems like it would be unnecessary effort, in comparison to following the main roads and detailed map guidebook in hand…)?

Similarly, I also loaded a Custom POI file for all US/Canada National parks onto the SD card. Of course, the Nuvi itself will take me to any park entrance. How would I take advantage of whatever specific points are built into the Custom file, when visiting INSIDE any particular Park? Thus, is there a way to use the Custom Parks file to more efficiently view ON SCREEN what I expect are dozens of viewpoints / scenic attractions in that file, versus the built-in Garmin Poi’s?

One last general question concerns other files for Highway Rest Stops, McDonald’s, and KFC: In the future, when on a Custom Route, how would I perform a SEARCH for whatever range of Rest Stops or KFC’s or McD are upcoming, and have the results of those CUSTOM FILES show up on the 855 screen? In other words, will the Nuvi screen show icons for all nearby Rest Stops, etc. (say, the next 10 or 20 miles)? Will the Nuvi screen differentiate whether the POI’s are from the Custom List OR the Built-In Garmin list?

At this point, I am such a newby to Custom POIs that I don’t wish to complicate things with adding special warnings or alerts, as I near specific locations...maybe that will come later.

Sorry if these questions seem so inane. I did search through the Poi-factory FAQ, but did not see anything that seemed to address them. Please feel welcome to point me to specific FAQs that will help this Custom POI rookie.

Go To/Extras/Custom POIs

The custom POIs you loaded will show as a dot on the screen when it is zoomed in close. Only the nearest POIs would show up.

To access all your custom POIs, click on Go To/Extras/Custom POIs. Categories of custom POIs will be listed in the menu if you created a folder for each category in the PC before running POI Loader.

Under Go To/Extras/Custom POIs/Rest Stops a list of the closest rest stops will be there listed by straight line distance, including those behind you. I find this list more useful than icons on the screen. You can select one POI from this list and click on GoTo to be routed there, or if it is on a route in progress you can be alerted when it is nearby, if you set up a proximity alert in POI Loader earlier.

In addition to following Dobs108's instructions, make sure that you turn on alerts by
Tools > Settings > Proximity Points > on

The custom pois and the internal(Points Of Interest)are located in different locations and do not show together. In other words with you search custom pois it will not include the internal ones.Same for searching points of interest they will not include the custom pois. One feature I use a lot when traveling is the near tab at bottom of screen when in route. It will give option to search along the route or the destination.Along with that may include a certain category.Like all the custom poi hotels.Again you have to search custom pois and internal separate.

Since your unit does routes and there is a Yellowstone Park custom poi file. Why don't you just make a route for the stops?

Annoying Message to transfer Custom POIs direct onto Nuvi

Per dobs108:
"To access all your custom POIs, click on Go To/Extras/Custom POIs. Categories of custom POIs will be listed in the menu if you created a folder for each category in the PC before running POI Loader."

I thank you for your earlier, specific advice to create separate folders for each of the 7 (or so) Custom POIs that I downloaded: This makes each list immediately searchable from "Extras."

However, now I have one more issue: Each time I turn on the 855, I get a message offering me the NO / YES choice to install my Custom POIs directly onto the Nuvi. I prefer to permanently keep them just on the micro SD card. It is annoying to see this message EVERY time I turn the 855 on: I fear that I will mistakenly answer "Yes," eventually.

I have tried removing the battery, and restarting; I have also removed and reinserted the SD card, but I keep getting this message.

HOW DO I GET RID OF THE ANNOYING MESSAGE?

That wont work.

At least not on the 1350 and there are a lot of others that it wont work on. You have to just say no.

Doesn't work on the 1490LMT either. They removed the options "Don't ask me again" and "skip".

Not sure but it may work on

Not sure but it may work on the 855. That feature went awy on a lot of the newer models.

Responding YES leads to Solution!

Charlesd45 is THE MAN!

TA-DA, Success!

I was initially distrustful of following the advice in your poi-factory link, BUT...after reading subsequent responses (that it did not work with some later units), and realizing that the 855 and 265 were built about the same time...I realized that I had no choice but to try the suggestion.

And YES, I answered "YES" (to install to Nuvi), and was presented with the promised screen of another NO/YES choice, as well as a box to check NO (...and the equivalent to "Don't bother me again").

It is amazing that such a counter intuitive response, i.e., answering YES, does lead to the Solution.

I have since powered the 855 On and Off several times (and removed the battery twice), and now I boot without the annoying message.

Another round of huzzahs for poi-factory advice...and the wonderful community of fellow Nuvi users, always chiming in with their experience and advice.

It does make you wonder when

It does make you wonder when you say yes what may be the results. They could have made it much simpler.
