Garmin GPS Repair

My Garmin 2559LMT died. I attempted to replace the battery and ended up breaking the battery clip off of the system board. I called up Garmin. They offered me a refurbished GPS in trade for $100. I thought my unit was toast. I looked up a place that I bought Garnin parts from previously. I contacted the owner Chris Short. He resoldered a battery connector onto the system board and replaced the battery. The unit is working great now.

Here is the info:

Good to know, although for many years a dead Garmin was an excuse to get a new Garmin. I’m not crazy about some of the new stuff so in the future I might need a repir facility.

Ebay, Amazon for refurbs and/or use Google as well. By the time you pay shipping both ways, the repair cost and time without the unit it maybe easier to pay for the replacment.

Thanks!

Thanks for the repair reference. Finding someone willing to work small electronic devices these days is quite rare. We have a cell phone repair shop in our local mall, but I think they mostly replace batteries, etc. I am not sure what they would do if you took a GPS device needing a solder repair in to them.

If you have a CB shop in the area that actually works on CBs they might be able to help. Most CB's these days have surface mount parts, some of the transistors and whatnot are smaller than a grain of rice soldered to the board. In other words they are good at soldering very small parts and in tight spots.

Some of the older units such as the Nuvi 1370 and the Nuvi 2559 have lifetime maps for both Europe and the USA. Garmin discontinued the units that had lifetime maps for both Europe and the USA. That is why I opted to get my unit fixed.

The price was reasonable. It was a little over $60 with two way shipping.

It is getting harder and harder to find places that actually do soldering and board repair rather than replacing entire boards.

Thanks

For the info

Thanks

Good to know. I have had a kindle and a laptop repaired when batteries or the plugs to charge have worn out or broke. Not always cheaper to repair given how electronics continue to drop in price (other than smartphones that are going the opposite direction) but a good option to consider rather than the trash.

battery always an issue for

battery always an issue for old gps.

Alan, it appears Scharcnet-USA is still in business since Jim still has his website.
For those who are not familiar with Scarcnet-USA, Jim is a member of this site and has repaired GPS's from our members.

The only problem is I'm not sure if he is still making any repairs sine the message on his site indicates "Repair Schedule “FULL”. Checked this on 12-10-19as well as other times that shows FULL.
The sites shows only older models and may not apply to the newer models.

Good Luck w/ Sharc-net

I kept a browser tab open and checked it daily (or more often) for months on end and the status never changed (for me, and no the page wasn't cached locally). I received 1 email during that time, but never got the opportunity to send him my older GPS for a non-rubberized replacement case.

Jim hasn’t posted at the Poi Factory site since 5/30/18, but worth a try to possibly get a response from his contact member page.

Sad truth ...

Although Sharcnet's rates are very reasonable and they have a great reputation, the sad truth is that it really makes little sense to repair most Garmin road navigation devices for $60 or more when you can buy something like the DriveLuxe 51 refurb for $99. It may make sense to repair an expensive zumo, or one of the more expensive handhelds like the Montana. But for a nuvi or Drive device you are probable better off just buying a replacement, even taking a chance on a used device on eBay.

Yeah, CB shops aren't as popular as they once were but the folks still into them like mods and mods mean soldering, so chances are if you have a nearby CB shop they do work on them.

With technology it means change in how we lead our daily lives.
With these changes, sometimes things are better or can be worse depending if you view the glass as being full or empty.

I think the we are living in a throw away society where every few years we have to replace items that were once quality but now are cheaper to replace.
Case in point, I still have a Sears dehumidifier in my basement for 35 years, it still works as good as when I bought it.

I guess I suppose I'm reluctant accept change in my old age, but why do people need a refrigerator that to remind them they are low on milk. grin

This is a throw away society.

My dishwasher needed new racks because they were rusted out. They cost more than a new dishwasher. I bought a new one. My clothes dryer is 55+. It's still running I just put a new belt and idler on it.
