Within the year, if not sooner, I-86/NY-17 around Parksville, NY will be undergoing a major rerouting. Construction is currently underway. That route will definitely require a map update in order to work correctly otherwise your GPS will show you driving in free space on the side of a mountain!

Northern Virginia is in a similar boat. They're adding new lanes to the right on I-495 in order to convert the original lanes into HOT lanes. In order to do this, they have redone all of the on and off ramps. So with map update 2012.10 and before, GPS will claim I'm either off-road or I'm driving on an on or off ramp even though I'm actually on a new lane on the freeway.

Since construction is expected to continue for a couple of years, I suppose GPS will never be right until then.

There is a road around here (US 22) that has been under construction for years, as far back as I can recall. Probably 50 years or so by now from what I've heard from family members. Anyway, they are quite good at keeping it up to date, every map update I've taken it on this road and you could see the difference between the versions.

Hopefully for your situation they will have it updated with this version, if not then it could be done the next. I'd suggest checking out www.navteq.com to report the change if it hasn't been done already.

After I got my Android phone I stop paying attention to these map files.

Different everytime

You sure are right about US 22. I avoid it as much as I can. It's just like the PA Turnpike, under construction for life. That's why you need lifetime maps.

I can't use any smiley faces here. Both of these roads are Horrible For Life (HFL)!!!

I was just on it yesterday and while there is still construction, it is almost complete as a 4 lane highway. No 2 lane sections remaining untouched from Pittsburgh to Altoona. It used to be a 2-3-4-3-4-2-4-3-4-2-3-4-3 lane road with speed limits anywhere from 25-55, changing more often than most people's underwear...

Glad to hear

I hated sitting still in the traffic backup with dump trucks and construction vehicles blowing dust all over my car. I have never taken my Harley on US 22 between the Turnpike and Rt 56.

Thanks for the update. I might try it out next time I have to head that way.

Thanks a lot

Now waiting for North America version

A lot of people avoid this road

I know a lot of people that avoid this road, they would rather take the turnpike to head out to Pittsburgh. Strange being around the Johnstown area as it takes so much longer that way.

Head down 56 and you'll end up passing by my house smile

Further north

From Zelienople I usually run north to Rt 422, out to Rt 56 down into Johnstown, just to bypass 22.

I guess I've passed your house a few times.

Has anyone that reported a new road through the Navteq Map Reporter and received an email saying the request has been completed, noticed the change in the next map update? Or does it take a long time before the change actually reaches the map update phase.

A new slip ramp was built near me for the PA Turnpike and I submitted it to Navtec. I'm curious if it will be in this update since I received an email back on 3/31 that the request was completed.

Seeing the leaves change colors is still a special treat for my wife and I, as we in So Cal dont get to see many trees change to yellow, orange, and red. Maybe that would change if we saw them every year.

Many of our trees here go straight to brown and then promptly fall off, usually it all happens during what we call Fire Season. (It is actually a real season out here like spring and fall...HAHA!)

Hope you have a great trip to NE with the new update that should be out soon!

so the only time I saw the leaves change was when I met my wife in 1970 in October! It was beautiful to say the least. I can't wait to return, I think it will be fun for both of us...AND that new map will certainly help. I always take 2 Nuvi's with me, just in case...can't wait!

Bah

It is pretty much a waste of time to bother upgrading from one version to the next. The likelihood of anything truly significant is fairly low as the updates are incremental in nature.

Once every year or two is adequate, so I don't bother rushing over to the Garmin web site to download the updates the second they come out . . . if I happen have my navigator in the house to pull the tracklogs or to drop in a route I'll take the MAP update if one is available, but these days i DECLINE all firmware updates for any of my navigators. Garmin's code sucks the hind tit of late.

Takes Years For Navteq Updates

MAC06,
Folks here have reported that it can take many years for an update to show. I've been waiting a year and a half for a fix that I reported. I remember reading one post here where the guy said he had been waiting seven years. I don't know why it takes Naveteq so long. You would think they would be more on top it.

I've heard it takes a couple of years for roads to get added but I actually got an email from Navteq for one of my submissions that said the request was completed. So I'm wondering if it will make this release.

Change Requests Not Implemented

I have submitted change requests through their reporter 3 times in the past, and each time I got a response saying it was completed. Only one of the 3 ever showed up in the maps. I quit submitting change requests due to the lack of implementation of them.

One of the changes I submitted 6 years ago is a road leading to a campground/marina in Linwood, Michigan, which was closed by the local community so RV's & boats would not be going through their housing development. The campground/marina built a private road into the grounds. As of last month, when we travelled there, the Garmin still directs you to the campground via that old dead-end road, instead of to the private road.

I don't rush out there and

I don't rush out there and update as soon as it is available, either. Four times a year is probably overkill, Most updates are mainly for keeping the POI's semi up to date.

I can't believe it takes over 6 years (and counting) to correct a road. Just seems like it wouldn't be to hard to fix.

The submission I received the completed email for was a new PA turnpike slip ramp, obviously a major road way. I believe it took less then a year to complete the ramp and it opened a few months ago. If it actually makes it this quick, I'll be shocked.

Now I am curious about the POIs. I gather from reading here that actual road updates can take quite some time. How long does it take to get POIs changed? For example, just for the sake of argument, lets say a brand new Super America gas station opened up 01-01-2010. Would it be pretty optimistic to think it might show up a year later on the most recent City Navigator NT update?

my house was added during

my house was added during the last update, the road has been here many years, and the house was here for 5 years, but the address never showed until I added it to the navteq site. Took a few updates, but under a year.

Could be a few months

I submitted a few changes earlier this year around March - May, and checked Navteq's site today and they have been corrected. My submissions were still considered "Open" so I closed them today. Guessing the submissions were also reported by someone else or they corrected them by some other means, but at least they are correct. Wonder if they will be in the next update from Garmin...

I downloaded 2012.20 just fine

I downloaded 2012.20 just fine to my 780. Downloading 2012.20 to my 1490LMT now. I'm using the old GarminMapUpdater_v2.7.10.exe for my downloads.

MapInstall Question

Hello,

I have a nuts-and-bolts question about City Navigator NT 2012.20.

I just updated to 2012.20, but 2012.10 is still showing as an option in MapInstall. I'm planning a trip to London in a couple of months. Do I need to load both the 2012.10 and 2012.12 maps?

The reason I ask is, I noticed the Europe map update is significantly smaller than the original DVD, 2.3 GB versus 2.8 GB.

Thanks very much,

tcascade
