Sorry..newbiew POI problem.

I follow all the instructions and the POI loads into my 1390LMT and I can see the file in the POI folder. But, I go to Extras and there is no custom POIs there. What am I doing wrong? I am using POI Loader. I have tried two different POI files, Good Sam and Rest Areas. I am sure it is something quite simple.

Thanks,
Ken

Are you telling POILoader to load the contents of the folder or are you telling it to load the file?

POILoader loads the contents of folders, not individual files. If your file is in a folder POI, then tell the loader you want to load the folder POI and it will read and compile the contents of the folder into a file with the extension GPI into the poi folder on your Garmin. The GPI file name will be the same as the folder containing your the file(s) you want loaded.

Did you go far enough?

Maybe you did not go quite far enough

When you tap "Extras", you will see "Custom POIs" at the top of the screen. You need to tap on those words in order to see a list of your POIs.

Thank you, it was more than simple.

I feel pretty dumb for the posting. When I looked at Extras there is Custom POI (which I thought was a title rather than a category). Yes, the POIs where in there. It is confusing in that the directory structure it uses puts the POI file into a folder called POI when you look at it from Explorer. I like the Garmin, but looks like I need to do some playing. Thanks!

If it makes you feel better, ...

POI Problem

I have recently purchased a 3790LMT and have loaded some custom POIs such as red-light camera alert into the required folder with picture icon, alert sound, and file. The POIs load into the proper folders and I have the alert sound enabled. Yet I do not get the alert sound, or the icon, or the notification that I am approaching one of these POIs. All of the files within the folder have the same names with the exception of the extensions. I've owned two previous Garmins and have loaded POIs with alerts and they all alerted when I approached them. Is there a step I'm missing?

BTW, the POIs show up when I look in the Custom POI screen and I can select them to show me where they are on the map, but the icons show up only when I magnify the screen to its max zoom level and the alert sound does not sound.

Thank you for any insight - Dan

Did you turn your alerts on?

Did you turn your alerts on? It is probably in the tools section.

On the alert question.By chance are you trying to use mp3 for the voice alerts? You will need sox.exe and wav see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730.

When I got my new 3760 and did not get the alerts, someone reminded me that I needed sox.exe. redface

Sox.exe is an easy thing to forget to load when you haven't needed it before or when you have used it in an older unit for a long time. smile

yes, I am using mp3 for my alert sound. Here is an example of the files I'm using in a folder:

Redlight-Cameras.bmp
Redlight-Cameras.cvs
Redlight=Cameras.mp3

Thank you, I'll checkout the sox.ex and load it. This is a new step for me, since I didn't need it on my 660 or 885T.

Typo

Was the typo (= instead of -) in the mp3 file name you used or only on your post?

Also, I think you need wav files not mp3's on your 3790.

Thanks for checking on my

Thanks for checking on my file name. Yes the (=) was only on my post. I've converted my .mp3 to .wav files formatted as Linear PCM, Mono, 44.1 kHz with the sample size of 16 bits, and placed the "sox.exe" file in my "Garmin" folder. The next time I'm out and about I'll see if it works.

Thanks to everyone for their help

The newer models will not work with the mp3.Have to use the wav and sox.exe.You shouldn't have any problems now as long as you put the sox.exe in the correct location on your computer. The latest poiloader changed location to program files.

Short note to say thank you

Short note to say thank you to all of you for your help. My alerts sound and the icons show up. Using the wav file and sox.ex did the trick.

Now for a second question, since sox.ex is a PC file, how would this work with a Mac. Since I use a Mac and run both PC and Mac operating systems, this solution wasn't a problem. Does that mean those who have only Macs operating systems don't need to include a sox.ex equivalent.

Not a Mac user but it has

Not a Mac user but it has been reported from some Mac users you don't need the sox.exe but you do need the wav depending on the gps you have.

sox.exe wav mp3

What happens if someone has four files:
bmp
cvs
mp3
wav

and sox.exe in the poi loader folder.

Will the resulting gpx file work on both models that support mp3 and models that do not support mp3 ?

with SOX

With SOX WAV files play on either unit.

I'm curious also. If there is both a wav and mp3 file in the same folder, which will POILoader use when it compiles the file? (assuming sox.exe is in the POILoader foler)

Dunno

I have avoided this exact scenario because I didn't want to create a possible conflict.

One of you brave souls just needs to try it and tell us what happens. wink mrgreen

I tested this on my 765 (which has a mp3 player) and POILoader choose the wav file

Thanks Jgermann

I was going to set this up and test it this evening but you just saved me the time. I guess I can go riding now instead.

using sox

I just tried it, and while running POI Loader, Vista asked permission to run SOX.exe

So it looks like it uses the wav file.

Flowchart

When software is faced with decisions, it has to establish a priority.

My guess is that the POILoader flowchart looks at a folder for .csv and .gpx files. Finding a .csv or .gpx file, POILoader would then look to see if there a .wav file whose name matched that .csv or .gpx file. If it found one, it would cease looking for a "sound" file for that particular .csv or .gpx file, but if it did not, then it would look for a .mp3 file (if the GPS supported them).

Lot's of possibilities but the one above would not be out of the question.
