Borders Liquidating all Remaining Stores

Another sad day for book lovers

I enjoyed browsing around these. There is no "computer" experience that can replace this.

I'm sure amazon is happy

We are becoming less literate

The repercussions of this new age is that Americans are becoming 'skimmers' and we're losing a lot of our ability to spell and apply grammar.

grab it now

Time to get the Border's POI to find all the liquidation sales.

Gift Cards !!!!

If you have any Borders Gift cards NOW is the time to use them, usually once a company 'officially' goes into liquidation (Borders goes before the judge this Thursday) gift cards are no longer acceptable.

Agree

I couldn't agree more ! Nothing like killing a couple of hours in a bookstore....whether it's browsing the stacks or checking out your favorite magazines...etc. I remember in the 70's when I traveled on business to the Detroit area alot, I'd stop at the original Borders in Ann Arbor and browse. Always thought that was such a cool store! In Chicago at the time we only had a small chain called Kroch and Brentano's bookstores.

Will be missed

Checking out all the different books at Borders and other big stores like B&N will definitely be missed. On-line may be cheaper but there is something special about being able to walk around the store and looking thru the books.

we also had a number of independent bookstores

Actually, we also had a number of independent bookstores that were all put under by the chains ability to undercut on price. The local bookstore could not even purchase wholesale books at the price the chains sold at.

I miss bookstores but have little sympathy for the chains being brought under by their own game.

Thanks for the headsup.

Thanks for the headsup. I've removed the *.csv file from my system & next time I update my Garmins, Borders will be gone, sorry to say.

Brick & Mortar Bookstores...Book Showrooms

Sad to see Borders go. I used to go and buy a book or magazine and sit in the coffee shop with an iced coffee mocha to pass the time.

But really, unless someone wants a book "right now", my observation is that a lot of people go to the book store "window shopping" and then go home and get on their computers and order the books from amazon. With the economy the way it is now, people are finding different ways to save a buck... I don't blame them. 30 to 40% off retail, no sales tax and orders over $25...free shipping. Hard to stay in business with that kind of competition.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Sad but .....

With the invention of the internet, and now e-books, people can use their PC, iPad, etc. to download books to their device. My wife has told me that many of the books she wants to read are only sold via e-books. You can't get them in the stores anymore. She uses her iPad to download from Kindle, Nook, or i-books. It's quick, easy and many times cheaper than driving to a real store. You can now even preview the book before buying it just like if you were at Borders.

You better wait

The firm running the liquidation--and this is par for the course when a retail store chain is liquidated from bankruptcy now--RAISED their prices in Borders' stores
before the start of the sale. They will slowly start to discount but you may continue to be able to find better deals at amazon for a while.

Shame. The Barnes stores

Shame. The Barnes stores around here are small and never had the "big open come browse" feel that Borders here had. I'l miss the 40% off coupon each week in my email that always got me in the store.

Bad News

It is unfortunate that Borders is going out of business. We always enjoyed shopping there.

Barnes and Noble

Now you can go to Barnes and Noble (at least as long as they are around) to shop....One of the big problems with these book stores is they want to charge full retail price. You can go to Amazon and usually save at least 25%.

Unless you had a Borders card almost all of their books were sold at full retail. Sometimes they would have a sticker on some of the hardbacks for 20 - 25% off.

I went into the local Borders the other day to check it out. Pretty sad. The place was in a mess, bargain hunters grabbing books and just throwing back onto the shelves or on tables. The coffee shop was already closed up. As far as the sales... mostly 10% off on the paperbacks and 20 -30% on other books. Not really a good sale at this point. When the price drops to 50% or more then the books they have left are the ones nobody wants.

Even with their "sale" it's cheaper to go to Amazon. One of the reasons they're closing up shop IMO. Now to see how long B&N lasts or if they try to do something different to stay afloat.

I'm gonna miss Borders though.

Barnes & Noble

With only one national chain surviving I wonder how long we will be able to purchase books at all!

No great bargains

Our Borders store closed down a couple months ago during the first attempt to salvage the chain. People waited in line for over an hour the first weekend to buy books at 10-20% off regular price. It's funny how when a "going out of business" sign goes up, there must a mass exodus out of the WalMart parking lot so all the dealhunters can think they're getting a great bargain.

The so-called liquidation deals still end being more than what you can find in a regular sale price or online. By the time they discount to 70% or more off, the only stuff left is what no one ever wanted in the first place.

Ditto

That was my experience, as well, mpatoka, with Round 1 of Borders' liquidation. And it's not just Borders. It's true of liquidation sales at most any chain store where they are closing more than one location at a time. The liquidator--the chain corporation management is often already out of the store when the liquidation sale begins--tends to play games such as pulling merchandise off the shelves that they can sell wholesale elsewhere once the price is about to fall to a tempting point, and they bring in junk from other sources to sell marked way down later in the liquidation, but since it's junk, you probably don't want it, anyway. For week one, the liquidator will actually raise some prices on some merchandise to take advantage of big crowds. And as you said, checkout lines can be 30-60+ minutes early on, making it a poor investment of your time. Going to chain liquidation sales is rarely worth the effort, especially in weeks one or two.
