Size of your POIs

In a number of threads, we have discussed internal memory of Nuvis - and - given advice as to how to increase the memory available - and - debated the merits of .csv versus .gpx with emphasis on the fact the .gpx files are larger.

The thought struck me as to whether it was possible to use up internal memory purely through the addition of POI files, so I checked the size of mine. I went to X(Garmin Nuvi):\Garmin\POI and did a right-click and then selected Properties. My entire POI folder occupies 21.5 MB (and I use icons and sound files for everything).

It would be instructive for all those of you who think they have massive POI files to post the total size of your Nuvi):\Garmin\POI folder. Maybe then we could start to isolate why internal memory seems to be a problem for many.

Could it be possible that some people are putting their downloaded .csv and/or .gpx files on their Nuvi as opposed to their PC?

For those units that can play .mp3 files, I can understand how internal memory could be eaten up if one's entire music collection is put on the Nuvi.

My 765T has 4 GB of internal memory (and I still have 1.9 GB free) but I can see from the thread
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33586
that many units have only 2 GB so that implies remaining memory on those units might be tight.

However, assuming other Nuvis are similar in features, I could get over 300 MB by removing voices other than American-Jill. (NEVER NEVER remove anything from your Nuvi unless you have made a full BACKUP).

As a side note - does anyone know where the 6 million internal POIs reside? I can't find anything (based on the number and size of my POIs) that seems to fit.

Anyway, let's together try to get a handle on the amount of space that our poi-factory downloads take up on our Nuvis.

I have

A 750 with 2 GB of memory and I'm using about 1.5 GB. Most of that is the map & POI files. My Custom POIs and audio books are on a 2 GB expansion card. I've never done it but I understand that the maps can be placed on the expansion card and used by the 750. If that is true then there should be no problem with running out of memory, I'll just replace my 2gig card with an 8 gig.

The 6

The 6 million internal POI's are stored in the gmapprom.img file which is the main map file on your Nuvi. 2GB Nuvi models are having (going to have) space issues that require files to be deleted or maps to be placed on SD cards, because of map file size growth. It will not matter much how many POI's there are in the map data.

thanks for that info

Has it ever been discussed what happens if you delete the gmap3d,img file (on my unit that is 133MB)? Since my feeling is that the 3D file is cute but not very useful, I could do without it if i was having memory problems.

Don't think

Don't think much would happen if you MOVED that file off your Nuvi and just kept it on your PC for safe keeping. You can also just turn it off by deselecting it from the Map Info page, to see what affect not having it load will have on your Nuvi experience.

On the other hand why bother doing anything with it? You can always put your POI's on an SD card to gain more space as well as delete voice, text, EULA, etc. files you will never use. The recommended way to install maps that won't fit on the Nuvi is to place them on an SD card.

Safe keeping

A PC is not really a place for safe keeping unless you make regular backups. Between virus issues and hard disk failures, you'd be better off to keep these files on a DVD.

SD POIs copied to device

On my Zumo model, POIs on an SD card are copied to the GPS main memory to use them. (If you write protect the SD card, they stay on the SD card only.) Check your Nuvi to see if it works the same.

POI's can go on SD

POI's can be put on an SD card on a nuvi. That is the way I have them on mine. When you boot the nuvi, and depending on model, a couple things will happen. You will be asked if you want to put them on internal memory. You push the button fo NO. On some models you will be asked to never see this message again. You click on NO. On other models you won't get that message and need to say NO to putting the POI's on internal memory everytime you boot up.

SD card or not

@dave817 - They can be used from the SD card also. My zumo 660 works the same as my 2 nuvi 765Ts do. When you place new POIs on the SD card on bootup the GPS asks if you want to move them to the GPS and has a checkbox to click that says 'don't ask this again'. I always say NO and check the box. Though I have plenty of room on all 3 units (4 GB) I put everything on the SD card except new vehicles which have to be in internal mem to be used.

@all - The maps are the memory hogs. So why not go right to the solution that will provide the biggest increase in memory. I haven't searched but I'm sure there is a thread or 2 detailing how to place the maps on the SD card. Users with 2GB of internal memory should probably just be directed to these posts or a new, step by step instruction post be put together for quick linking. Then they don't have to settle for partial maps.

I have never had to put maps on an SD card myself so it would be like the blind leading the blind if I tried to list the steps.
