Junction View - Use it or Lose it?

We just got back from a 1200+ mile trip to and around Southern California. Previous to this I had not seen any Junction View (JV) displayed on my unit. This trip I finally got to see it in action.

I have to say I'm rather unimpressed with the feature. I already knew the lane I needed to be in for the interchange because of Lane Assist (LA). The change in screen, loss of the other information normally displayed, and the fact it pops up and only displays for several seconds before vanishing again, made the JV feature something I found distracting just at a time when I didn't want any additional distractions. For me I find LA is much better in many respects.

On returning home I updated my 1490T's firmware and maps. As reported elsewhere the latest map update has many new JV locations, including here in Tucson.

On searching this site I found a simple way to disable JV is to just rename the file extension so the JVs no longer appear. Simple, but that got me thinking...

I'm curious how many other users actually find JV useful, more useful than LA, and actually use it. I'm also interested in how many of you are like me and have disabled JV too, finding it more distracting than beneficial?

Junction View not as annoying as Zoom effect

Junction View and Lane Assist are helpful, but a little distracting on my Garmin 1390's 4" screen. However, MUCH more annoying is the feature that zooms in on an upcoming intersection or junction. That gets on my last nerve. Just when I look over to see how traffic is piling up on my commute, the screen zooms in to 800 ft and I can't see anything but the immediate area. I am so tired of that I am getting a new system. I have ordered a TomTom with a larger screen, so at least if it does anything stupid like Dynamic Zoom I have enough screen to see past it.

Junction View

I find the Junction View to be more accurate than the Lane Assist.

I'm often driving an RV pulling a tow vehicle (toad), and when in unfamiliar territory really like knowing as early as possible which lane I need to get in. It's hard to change lanes at the last minute.

Junction View is a nice tool to confirm which lane is best, especially those times when there is another turn coming shortly after this one.

JV

Didn't find it a distraction last time I was somewhere that data existed for. It comes and goes before I even notice it usually.

comes up about 3/4 mile before the turn and stays up

On the units that show JV graphic with a split screen junction view on the right and the map on the left half it is far more useful. When split screen JV pops up it comes up about 3/4 mile before the turn and stays up until the maneuver has been done.

I like that so much better than the full screen JV units that comes up for such a short time it is gone by the time you see it is there.

Definitely helpful

I drove from PA to TX a couple of weeks ago in a moving truck with a car behind it. The junction view was very helpful as I could actually see a picture of the ramp before I got to it. Like Roy said, you can't always just change lanes at the last minute in a larger vehicle like that.

Useful when accurate

The large JV file gives me a JV for every exit off the interstate around here. That is not very necessary but is OK. In bigger cities with more complex intersections I find JVs to be quite useful. Occasionally I have one that is not real close to what the signs really say and then it is more confusing than nothing. But that rarely happens.

Jim

Worse than useless ...

The worse thing about "junction view" is that with each upgrade there appears to be less local terrain & minor street detail (not an insignificant issue if you are a rural user & your primary Nuvi use is driving to obscure trailhead locations). Regional routing seems to be deteriorating also.

Junction view, lifetime traffic, bluetooth, voice command? Marketing aimed a Sunday advertisement circulars!

I love it

Me too, and if you want to get rid of jcv sooner than normal, just touch the screen.

Zoom feature

Garmin should create an option in their software to disable auto-zoom feature.

auto zoom disable

It is hard to guess Garmin's thinking on this. The autozoom enable/disable feature seems to come and go when new models are introduced. My old 855 has it, my 755T doesn't. The feature came back on the 37xx series, but was missing again on the newer 34xx and 35xx series. Also, if I remember correctly, they sometimes have or don't have this feature on the same model series, depending on what part of the world you are in or purchaced the device in (NA or Europe vs Asia or Australia)

Auto Zoom 1490lmt

The auto zoom nearly caused a problem a couple of times while navigating through a complicated interchange. I think the 2555 or 2595 birds eye view would work for me.

This option is available if you set up the unit using Germany. (Not sure about other European countries). I have mine set up this way. You must change the language, keyboard and a few other features, but it's very easy. An option with the set-up is to disable auto-zoom. There are a few other minor changes, such as the red circle for speed instead of the square "speed limit" sign. You can also manually select your traffic provider if you have more than one installed.

Re: my previous

Re: my previous post....

Setting it up this way also stops the zooming at random junctions along your route, especially interstates. I used to think it was only doing this at -major- junctions (where two main interstates cross) or at complicated places such as left-hand exit lanes. But also I have also seen it happen at random points along the route in the middle of nowhere; places where there is no way that you might be confused about which way to go.

Interesting, on the 855, you can turn auto zoom off under Settings -> Maps.

JV

It's only on for a short period and I find it a nice touch.

2597 Sometimes I wonder..."Why is that Frisbee getting bigger?"...and then, it hits me.

Junction View

It can come in handy when there is a complex interchange on an Interstate highway. An example is exiting from I-85 going to the Atlanta International Airport. If you get in the wrong lane, you could end up right back on the Interstate and miss the airport altogether. Another is going through Nashville, TN on I-65. There are a number of merges necessary to pick up I-65 northbound. JV helps to stay on the correct path. It's especially nice in my new 2595LTM, which splits the screen when JV pops up.

PIttsburgh Jct View

On a recent trip to Pittsburgh PA we saw some unusual Junction Views. If you navigate from Hwy 28 N40.47426 W79.97185 towards the Airport, you will see 3-4 quick junctions, including one that has the Fort Pitt bridge and and tunnel. Try running this in Simulation mode

Start: N40.47426 W79.97185
End: N40.42076 W80.03197

junction view

It seems helpful, it might be better if it stayed on longer

JV usage

I used it quiet a bit on trip to Las Vegas from Florida. In my Rand Mc Nally Trip Maker And found it helpfull except for one time going out of Vegas to salt lake city It popped up and before i could cross to the exit. Another one popped up to show me lanes on the previous exit i missed. So many overpasses/exits lanes close togeother missed first one before next one popped up. out of the numerous times it helped me. that was one area it let me down. also my GPS voice Samntha spit out the first one instructions followed by the second exit after i already went by first exit instructions. But i gotta say this new Rand mc nally with its many features including JV is an amazing unit. With its hughe data base for RVs. i better shut before i sound like im doing a review for the unit instead of replying to your post on JV
