40 stopped working

All of a sudden, when I powered my NUVI 40 on, all I get is the "GARMIN" and the blue triangle. Won't hard reset, and my PC does not find it.

Bad cable with low battery?

I'd check for a bad cable with low battery dual issue before looking deeper.

Well David,

We have heard you figuratively kick yourself in several posts for not getting a higher end nuvi with Lifetime Maps. Maybe your 40 is trying to help you out?

Just kidding ... hope you can get it working.

Reached the useful life limit?

I guess you must have reached the useful life limit of the nuvi 40. laugh out loud

Sorry David

Tough Group Here - Means You Have Friends

Sounds like a bad battery to me as CraigW mentioned.

If you have a wall charger leave iit plugged in overnight, if not, let it charge in your car.

It should still be under warranty but doubtful if batteries are covered.

If charging doesn't work give Garmin, a call and see what they say. If the battery is not covered how is one to know it's not another hardware issue that is covered.

If

If the PC doesn't see the 40 I'd suggest it's something other than a battery issue as the USB connection shouldn't need a good battery on the Nuvi.

If the Nuvi is under warranty, I agree that Garmin should replace it, no matter what the cause (other than abuse)

Battery Not The Issue?

I'm not convinced that statement is true for all Nuvi's, although it might be for the 40 model being new.

Before my 660 is recognized by the PC it boots, then loads maps before the computer icon appears. If there is insufficient battery life it may not be able to load the maps and hang up, thus won't be recognized by PC.

My 2460 does not behave that way and does not load maps first. Perhaps it's the behavior of older units using USB1 instead of USB2 on newer units. I don't know the answer to that.

Battery

I'll leave it hooked up to the PC overnight and see if anything changes in the morning.

No luck

Left it on charge, both on the USB to the PC and the vehicle charger, for several hours. No luck.

Oh yeah, also tried a soft reset.

At least it hasn't been 12 months since I bought it.

And to top it off, I'm going on a trip to WV this weekend. GARMIN-LESS sad

Argh

A day later, my computer crashed.

Having one heck of a week!

No Luck

Well David seems like you have to send it in to Garmin for a replacement.

Oh my, you are having a bad week with Nuvi DOA and your computer crashes. And I thought these things only happened to me.

Enjoy your trip to West Virginia, you need a break.

Return

Yeah, they sent me the authorization to send it in. Probably will get a refurbished one back.

Had relatively good time visiting relatives. Good to be back. Can't pick up my dogs until Tuesday, which stinks.

225W

My boss let me use his 255W during this trip. Nice, but I like my 40 better. The 225W seems to have no lane assist, and I like the stats on the map page better on the 40.

I'm confident the refurbished one you do receive will look like a brand new one.

Put the old one in the mail today. We will see how long it takes. I miss it.

I assume they will de-register the old one?

ouch

David, it sounds like you are having my kind of luck. I hope things turn around for you.

I may have my user name and password confused or switched! Can I get confimation of my user name????

David, I just went through

David,

I just went through a similar situation with mine (see my "Be careful - killed my 50LM last night" post) and Garmin was pretty quick. Returning mine took a couple of days to get there and they sent the replacement 2 days after receiving mine, and it took another 2 days to get from Kansas to Illinois.

When I logged into MyGarmin with my usual login & password I noticed that they indeed had de-registered my defective one and replaced it with the new S/N of the refurb unit. Had no trouble updating it to the latest software & maps.

The refurb I got looked identical to a brand new unit fresh out of the box, it even had the thin peel-off film covering the screen. Haven't even really used it on a trip yet but I've had it on a few times and it seems to work just great.

Thanks For Informing

Appreciate you sharing your experience so others will now know what to expect when returning a unit under warranty. Garmin did make the effort to un-register your old one and register the new which saves you time.

From all the posts I've read, eveybody has stated the returned refurbished unit they receive from Garmin looks brand new. I think this is a good policy of replacement since the turn around time is fast and one doesn't have to wait for a repair to be done on the defective unit.

Good Experience

They confirmed they got it this morning and say it would be 1-3 days to check it in and send a replacement. Very nice experience so far! smile

Got my 40!

Got the refurbished 40 Tuesday. Looks brand new. Simple matter to copy over my saved Favorites and Custom POI files.

Interesting point though....a number of months ago, I accidently deleted my Cyclops RLC file, and Recuva could not find it. Anyway, I asked Garmin for another. They said they could not recreate it and suggested I get their RLC subscription. I did not yet qualify for this Factory's RLC file. The refurbished 40 has it.

The refurbished 40 also has the 2013.10 map. My old one had a previous version. Yay.

I did notice, however, that the map changes I sent Garmin many moons ago are not on it. Boo.

Good News

Now please do a FULL backup before toying with the files.

Glad you got a newer map and the unit looks brand new.
