Lost Junction View

to
N41 34.245 W87 43.928

is a stretch of I-80 in Illinois that used to reliably display one Junction View file and is now MIA in 2012.1

I just was able to get Junction View to work on a couple of known locations in California on my 1450LMT so it appears that some Junction Views were deleted to make room for the ever increasing size of the map install (including Junction View).

My first attempt at updating crapped out with an error and no Junction View. A re-installation would only allow installation of "lower 48" and gave a Junction View file size of 304,878 ... smaller than your Junction View, but remember, I could only install the "lower 48" so all of Canada, Alaska and Hawaii are missing (along with the corresponding junction views

Hoover dam bridge on I-93 is on the map. Not bad considering it was opened last November.

Not showing for my 765t :(

They must be staggering release so they don't clog the servers.

They must have taken it out, bud. I don't see it either.

On the 3790

On the 3790 the JCV file has gone from 106414KB for map version 2011.40 to 243431KB for version 2012.20.

That's smaller than the 358MB posted above but is probably do to the actual pictures not having to be as big on the 3790 as that unit supports 'split screen views' where half the screen is junction view and the other half is the normal map screen.

Still the new file is more than double the size of the old one so there must be a lot more view data in this map version. Now if Garmin would only fix the problem with the 3790 that allows only the first view in a route to be displayed we'd be able to actually see all these new views.

Thanks Juggernaut ... Guess the Garmin Gods had to delete some of the Junction Views to make room for the new and improved Junction Views. The I-80 Junction View was one of the first ones I ever saw ... and now it's gone.

JVC File

Where does the .jvc file live on the unit? I haven't been able to find a file on my 1490.

.

It's in the JVC folder on my 775T. Or, just do a search for *.jvc on the drive.

Interesting

I have a directory called JCV under the .System Directory. In there is a *.sum file. and its only 4bytes. I cannot find a JCV file anywhere on this unit.

Oops my Bad. LOL must be the first thing it deletes. Its there now after the update.

2012.1 update

I would advise anyone who has the 1450 not to upgrade at this time. It appears we 1450 owners are getting a error message at the end of the upgrade procedure. When I attempted to run the download program again, the message is not enough memory. I'll have to call garmin in the morning to figure out whats wrong.

It's in the JVC folder inside the .system folder (note it's DOT system). The .system folder is a hidden systems file under Windows so you'll need to alter the folder view options in order to see this folder in Windows Explorer.

I found the .jvc file

I had to tell windows to let me see system files. I do have the file it is 367.5KB. I was thinking that I had no junction views. I based it on 4 views when traveling from Fort Worth to DFW air port via I20 and 360. They are now gone. There are others around but not many. Must have lost them to NY or CA.

The same goes 1490

Do you mean 367,560KB or 367.5MB? I'm just trying to be clear for others with jcv files that are about to update or want to compare theirs to what we're seeing and my nuvi 855 file is 367,560KB.

The manual method still works despite it not being nearly as convenient. I had this error so I downloaded the maps to just the computer. I moved the old gmapprom.img off the GPS and then ran Mapinstall.

No problems here.

Junction View

I think it's pretty obvious why they are taking out junction views, and I think it's because in a couple of updates we're going to get the photoreal junction views that Canada now has. I'm not sure if all locations that have or had junction view will get the photoreal, but I'm pretty sure that's the reason why some are being deleted.

They definitely have changed the look of the junction views. I ran my example trip from Providence to Moncton. Each and every junction view was more accurate in reflecting the actual look of the highway. Whether that means these are photo-realistic I don't know. The biggest thing I noticed was that the signage bars above the road were present in the new images, whereas in 2011.40 they weren't there at all. The other thing I noticed is that to make it more clear which way to go they dimmed the sign for the direction in which you are NOT supposed to go. This is a good thing.

I do agree on one thing: expect any missing junctions to appear soon in a future update.

1490 Error

I got the same error everybody with a 14XX is getting!

1490 Error

Now, this is odd!!! I was downloading the update and got the error other 14XX owners are getting but when I turned the unit on and checked the map info it tells me I have 2012.1
Should I believe it is OK or do you think I should try to download the update again?

I downloaded to my 760T No

I downloaded to my 760T

No problem

Your 2012.1 map was installed

Edserrano, your 2012.1 map was installed, but I'll bet you don't have a Junction View file under .system/.

Like yours, my 1450LMT crapped out on my first attempt. When I investigated, my GPS had the 2012.1 mapset installed (or atleast it said it did) ... but my Junction View file was missing.

Second installation attempt only allowed me to install the lower 49 ... and the install program correctly installed the junction view file.

Still a bit bummed that KNOWN Junction View locations near me were apparently taken out to make room for the new and improved.

Please check

Strephon_Alkhalik, you said the manual method worked, installing 2012.1 on your 14xx GPS (downloading the update ONLY to your computer, then running Mapinstall.

Could you please check the date and size of your Junction View file.

I'm not sure this method would update the Junction View file.

Hey Lurking

Hey, Lurking ... no need to call Garmin.

I think the problem is there is not enough memory on the 14xx series GPS to install the entire map and the new and improved junction view files

I think the install program fails to accurately account for this ON THE FIRST INSTALL ATTEMPT.

Try a second install, but select "Lower 49" or one of the smaller install options.

(Before anybody says 'delete your help, vehicle, voice" ... my 1450LMT was pared down to the Max (Min?) and I still received the error.

Kind of a bummer that a relatively new GPS doesn't have enough memory ... but we've already discussed that to death.

It is 367,560KB.

My unit had 189MB free before the install. The update said there was not enough room. It loaded US and Canada. Now there is 25MB free.

Any problems

Just d/ld to my 755t. Went OK, but when I go into tools- setings-system and ask for version, it shows that detailed maps are version 2011 not 2012. Am I the only one seeing this? And no my firmware remains the same

Did you try turning the unit off and back on to reset it after the update? I always do a hard reset after an update.

Update

You are correct, I just have a folder named JCV with a 1 kb file named "D1279060A.sum".
I would hate to install just the lower 49 since I do travel a lot, mainly Canada and Puerto Rico!

Is there a way to install the map upate to the micro SD card and use it from there?

So, I wonder how long it will be before the 2012.20 thread is started?

I'll get this map update at some point, haven't seen anything incorrect on 2011.4 that has been updated on Navteq's site, so don't really see a need for 2012.10 just yet.

New Garmin Update Out 19 May 2011

All,

I've been checking every other day and today I downloaded the North American update for my wife's nuvi (1278.0 MB). It's installing as I write. And just in time, We leave in an hour or so for the drive to Santa Fe, NM. That's why I checked the Garmin Web site for updates.

I won't know what the map's called until installation is complete, but suspect it is 2011.20.

Get it while it's hot!

Bill

Watching

It's great reading all the comments and see what unit are having problems. I may wait till next week to do the upgrade after the proverbal dust settles.

finished

Finished downloading the new map to my 3790 last night, and the new map is showing more junction views (split screen). I live in CT and I never see any from CT and RI but now I do! That's a nice change. However, this one road to our friends house is still telling us to turn left and then make a U turn when you can just turn right from the start.

With this update, the only thing I have noticed that has changed is I'm finding lane assist literally EVERYWHERE, even on old country roads that I thought would never have it. Definitely a positive thing. Haven't really found anything negative with this update.

This map hates interstates

I have a 1390, and I noticed after updating to this from the last map,2011.40 I think, that my routes get taken off the major interstates very easily.

For instance Macon,GA to Johnson City, TN used to have me route through greenville, up through Asheville...Now it takes me straight the mountains--something I will never do.

options??

What's your routing options?

Setting the unit for shortest will have an affect, also using ecoroute.

Eco-Route tries for a route that will have speeds below 50 MPH as around 40 is the most fuel efficient speed for most vehicles. These units don't understand there are things such as stop signs, cross streets, traffic lights and whatever. They just see a road with a 40 MPH speed.

My experience is also the newer maps make no differential between "faster" and "shorter" in a lot choices. They will route you from an Interstate or multilane highway onto city streets because the distance is shorter going through town than it is staying on a bybass around the town that may be a tenth of a mile further, and higher speed than the route through town.
