Windows 7

Poi Loader works fine with garmin csv files on my Windows 7 computer.

What is the source of your csv files and are they in garmin format?

do you see any extensions?

If not, you may want to look at this link.

You windows 7 pc would not

You windows 7 pc would not have caused this problem. If your prior pc worked with these files, then something had changed when you transferred those files from your old pc to your new pc..

More info needed

Are you sure you are directing Poi Loader to the right folder? Have you looked into the folder and verified that there are csv files in there?

What message(s) is Poi Loader giving you or what is the indication that it does not recognize the csv files?

Just a thought

Just a thought here. Is it possible that the OP is falling into the trap that many do when first using POI Loader?

TIP: There’s a tricky spot in POI Loader (PC Version)

When you're inside POI Loader on the page where you tell it where the files are located, POI Loader shows folders but not the files inside them. Users are often confused because they don't see the files.

POI Loader let's you proceed if it finds files in the directory you've selected (even though it does not show them).

Looking for the csv files

Good thought Craig, that may be the reason the OP thinks that Poi Loader can not find them. It is one reason that I asked the questions about what the indication is.

rockyankeeswon: To clarify my post, when I asked "Have you looked into the folder and verified that there are csv files in there?" I meant by using Windows rather than POI Loader.

i have created a folder and called it poi files and many sub-folders inside for each category. But it doesn't matter which folder i choose as a target....it says:There are no data files in the folder. Please specify a folder that contains at least one file with a .csv or .gpx extension.Ihave my main folder on my desktop and have visually observed all .csv files in the folders.I also chose the main folder and sub-folders separately and got the same message.

puzzling

maybe you have some anti-malware software that is blocking Poi Loader from the csv files.

Try moving the Poi Folder to the root of the c: drive.

Also I think Poi Loader will not look more that two folders deep, counting the one you point to.

I think i saw that your target folder is supposed to be the one that has the files in it not the root folder? I will try moving the folder off my desk though!Do you think it is a problem because i put the files in sub folders....but i would think it wouldn't matter if i point the loader at the target folder?

Windows7/Poi Loader folder test

On my Windows7 computer I put a folder named Level1 on the Desktop

Inside the Level1 folder I put a folder named Level2

Inside the Level2 folder I put a folder named Level3

Then I downloaded RestAreasCombined(Ver.AG).csv from poi factory and put it in the Level1 folder. Poi Loader found and loaded it.

Next I moved the csv file to the Level2 folder. Again Poi Loader found the csv file and loaded it.

Then I moved the csv file to the level3 folder. Poi Loader gave the message: "There is no data in that folder. Please specify a folder that contains at least one file with a .csv or .gpx extension".

Note: In all three cases I directed Poi Loader to the Level1 ("target") folder.

I then moved the Level1 folder (with the same subfolders) to the root of the C:drive and got the same results by directing Poi Loader to the new location of the Level1 folder.

In summary, the "target" (Level1) folder can be anywhere on the computer. The csv file(s) can be in the target folder or in a folder or folders directly inside the target folder. Poi Loader will ignore csv files in folders that are inside any of the second level folders.

Folder Options via WindowsKey-E

Of course you can get to the Folder Options via control panel but on that "page with all my drives on it" you can click on "Tools" at the top of the page and then click on "Folder Options" exactly as stated in Step 2 of the link posted by jgermann.

Thanks to Evert

Evert, your post of the testing you did was excellent. I am trying to think of an appropriate title for it to be placed as a FAQ, but have not yet gotten it. Why don't you consider it.

You did something that made clear to everyone the concept the rest of us were trying to explain to rockyankeeswon, but were failing.

success is as success does

Thank you for your kind words but my intent was to show rocky that the information you linked to works in Windows 7.

I think the posts by you and charles45 that you linked to already very well describe the concepts and procedures.

Whether any of us have succeeded remains to be seen.

I learned back when I was writing procedures for installing equipment in nuclear power plants that people will misunderstand instructions no matter how clear you think they are written.

Have POI loader run with xp

I know when I got my new laptop with Win7 the poi loader would not work until I changed it to run using xp SP2. It might be worth a try. Left click on the icon, go to compatability and change to run with Windows XP (Service Pack 2). I've head numerous programs I had to do this with.

Poi Loader version?

Do you recall the version of Poi Loader you had to do that with?

You definitely do not have to do the XP compatability thing in Windows 7 with Poi Loader 2.6.1

May have been privious version

It was a previous version. I can't remember if I had to do it with the current version though come to think of it maybe I didn't.

64 bit no problem with Poi Loader

rockyankeeswon wrote:

No. I have tried it on both types as have others.

32 bit and 64 bit has to do with the width of cpu registers, data bus, memory and other system architecture.

64 bit Windows can deal with the new computers that have the larger width components.

Most 32 bit software will work ok with 64 bit Windows because Windows can be the go-between for the 32 bit software and the 64 bit architecture.

I have even run some old 8 bit DOS vintage software on a 64 bit machine.

Device drivers are a noteable exception because many of them work directly with the hardware and Windows would not get a chance to act as go-between.
