POI Updater Freezing. RLC Locations NOT Updating. Help Please.

Help please. Last few times I've run POI Updater it has frozen. With all the new RLC camera locations posted recently, I was able to determine that my Nuvi 1490T is NOT getting the RLC updates before the freeze happens.

Ok, so I just downloaded and installed POI Updater 2.6.1 from Garmin and tried again. This time a lot more happened, but still no luck. A few minutes into the procedure the status was "Transferring Custom POI ...". Very quickly after that, an error message pops up that "There was an unexpected error during the transfer of the custom POI file." The only option was to press finish, which I did. Again, the new RLC's are not appearing in the GPS unit (the old ones still do).

What to do??

Thanks.

SOUNDS LIKE A CABLE

Sounds like the cable or the port on the GPS isn't right. Have you tried another cable? I don't care if it worked with this cable in the past, try another cable.

Will check and advise.

?

By POI Updater, do you mean POI Loader? I've had problems with that before. Try a different browser to download POI loader.

Divide and conquer

To help bring some light on the problem, when you run POILoader select the Computer option and save the file to a folder on your hard drive.

If this works then it would appear to be a problem with the cable or GPS as BoxCar stated. Open Windows Explorer or what ever file manager program you use and see if you can see the Garmin drive connected before proceeding. If the Garmin drive is visible then try to drag or copy the file from your hard drive folder to the Garmin "n:\Garmin\POI" folder.

If it doesn't compile to your hard drive then there it could be a problem with POILoader compiling one of your files.

update

Have to run out in a minute on some honeydews, but here's up to date so far:

Yes, I meant POI Loader, not updater. Sorry.

Tried completely different cable but got same results.

Will try Divide & Conquer's idea, but there's been no problem with the GPS unit being seen and recognized by the PC.

I observed this sequence take place:

Reading data files. Successful or complete.
Writing databases. Successful or complete.
Transferring custom poi file. This is where it breaks down. I got the same message that "There was an unexpected error during the transfer of the custom poi file." And then only choice is to click "Finish".

I have a feeling that one of the poi files I added to the mix a few syncs ago is the problem, but I don't remember which. What is involved in resetting but not losing settings that will be a pain to reinstall and/or download?

Will clicking on "Ignore this file" help weed out the culprit, or does it need to actually be deleted or uninstalled?

When you click ignore it

When you click ignore it will bypass that file.Do you see what the eror message is?By any chance do you have some sound files with the csv or gpx file?

Don't see any other error message. Nothing appears to flash by, and the one that comes up stays there until I click Finish.

The only files are csv and gpx. No sound files.

Maybe I'll try ignoring everything except RLC and Speed Camera poi's and see what happens.

try deleting POI.GPI

Try deleting the POI.GPI file on the unit and then run the loader. 2.6.0 had a problem with not overwriting an existing file. 2.6.1 may have the same problem with a 2.5.4 GPI file.

IIRC, at the beginning of the POI load, it says file exists, continue anyway (or ok to overwrite it - I don't remember exactly).

You should also see delete

You should also see delete files on poiloader before you get to browse.

Compile to Hard drive

Did you try to compile to your hard drive without ignoring any files?

If compiling worked then try to copy or drag it to your GPS. POI Loader could have a timing or interface problem with your USB port and your browser may not.

I guess by now you have tried a different USB port.

Yes, tried different USB port - no difference.

Going to try compiling to PC rather than Garmin. Any particular naming convention or location to put it?

What am I deleting?:
Custom POIs.gpi 2,048kb 3/14/11 and/or
poi.gpi 9,015kb 12/02/10 ?

Just rename them for now

For now, instead of deleting them from your GPS just rename anything in the n:\Garmin\POI folder that has a file extension ~.gpi to ~.gpix so they will still be there incase you can't get your new files copied over but will be ignored by the GPS.

The new POI Loader should give you a filename suggestion depending on the folder they reside, that should be fine or call it whatever you choose.

update

Alright. Renamed the 2 files to .gpix. Compiled to hard drive, ignoring most poi files (RLC, SC, and a small number of other poi's not ignored). Successfully created a 690k CustomPOIs.gpi file on hard drive. Tried to drag it to Garmin unit. Got error window "Disk in destination drive is full. Insert new disk to continue."

Right-clicked the Garmin drive and it is 1.76 GB with only 12.0 KB free space! How could that be? I have no photos or extras that I know of taking up space. There are lots of languages in the Voice folder (ok to delete them? [yes--found the answer here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31831. Did so and now have 293 MB free] but other than that...?

update

Ok, with the disk space freed up on the Garmin (deleted all un-needed voice files and instantly freed up 293 MB), I had no problem dragging the custom poi file from the hard drive to the Garmin unit. Turned on the Garmin (after removing from the PC) and voila, the new RLC locations are onboard. Maybe it will even have fewer un-drawn map instances with the extra headroom. It sure seemed to weigh a bit less with that excess 293 MB gone! wink

Thanks all for your help! Hopefully, when the next RLC/SC updates are posted I will be able to install them the old fashioned way, and without any problems.

You can free up more space

Glad it worked out for you

@perpster

You can now go back and delete the renamed .gpix files on you GPS too.

Thanks again folks. Used the GPS today on the road and the unit was jack-be-nimble. No more undrawn screens and drawn-out calculations.
