2012.1 Map update

Does anyone know when this update is coming? 2011.4 has been out for 24 hours now and is old news. This is the internet/information age where things happen more rapidly than ever. If Egypt and Tunisia can overthrow enitre governments in a few weeks, shouldn't we expect to get map updates at least that fast? wink

No Enough Memory

The only problem I had with it was that I could not get it to install on my nüvi® 1690 -- said their wasn't enough memory. I was able to downsize the map by selecting only the US and Canada. I had already cleaned things off the 1690, such as unused voice & text files, so I couldn't find anything else to do with the unit.

For the life of me, I can't understand why Garmin puts so little memory in their units! If the Droid smartphone comes with 1Gb of memory, why can't Garmin put a little extra in their units?

no problems noted, seems like someone else pointed out they have expanded the lane assist, it shows up now on approaches to the Interstate, also it seems to show up sooner gives you more time to get in the correct lane, the only possible problem here in Utah is the number of lanes is incorrect but that could be because UDOT is putting more lanes on the interstate and it seems it takes about 2 years for Garmin to catch up.

GMA Authentication The Root Cause?

The solution to that error I mentioned in the other 2012.10 thread. Copy the map files to the computer ONLY, then run MapInstall to transfer the map to the GPS, once you cleared the old map off the internal memory. It's a workaround, because the installer shouldn't require anyone to do that. But Garmin's new GMA authentication built into the maps I believe is causing a few issues here.

The lack of memory in Garmin units has been discussed before. I happen to believe it to be a cost cutting measure on Garmin's part, since adding a decent amount of memory to the unit would increase the cost of the unit to a price point Garmin considers unacceptable. In any event, whatever portions of North America do not fit on the internal memory can be placed on the SD/MicroSD card. Yes, it's more work because you have to run MapInstall twice (once for the internal memory and once for the SD/MicroSD), but it works.

This is something I do all the time with my 200W since it only has 1GB of internal memory. In fact, for 2012.10 I swapped out the 1GB SD card I was using and put in a 2GB card for further expansion. It's my test mule, so I doubt I'm going to need more than that by the time it finally dies.

Look again for the 3D file. Mine didn't show up until after I turned the unit off and on. I also do a hard reset after a map update but I believe the 3D file showed up just after turning the unit off and on.

Got the answer after 3 hours. I had loaded the maps from Mapsource, not direct to the GPS. Direct gets the 3d file, Mapsource does not.

Updated My 660 As Well...

As I've done in the past, here are the free space stats on my 660 before and after the map updates.

The new maps will overwrite the previous one. HOWEVER - each map release is bigger than the last which means the free space gets smaller and smaller. Here are the free space numbers:

New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB
After 2010.40 update - 365MB
After 2011.10 update - 270MB
After 2011.20 update - 252MB
After 2011.30 update - 217MB
After 2011.40 update - 176MB
After 2012.10 update - 128MB

I did not have to delete any of the "optional" files like voices or vehicles to make this version fit. I installed all of North America which includes Canada and Mexico. grin

I am getting close however to having to delete some unnecessary files, or picking a region NOT to install. neutral

Yep, more lane assist

One of the first things I noticed after the update, was enhanced lane assist, in less than 20 miles from my home. And I live no where important, and not close to any metropolis. Showed multiple lanes, and when exiting onto the interstate, showed a static picture of lanes, well before the actual exit. Also, more 3D buildings. The 3D buildings I can do without, but the lane assist I really appreciate!

I backed up the .jcv file on my 855 before making the update available in February, and that for my 855 was 49,356,526 bytes.

This latest release gives me a 376,381,191 byte file.

Sorry I failed to backup the immediate prior release, so can't give the intermediate size on my machine.

Not all junction views in the US are PhotoReal.

Simulate a route south on I-5 from Portland Or. to Phoenix. If the Nuvi is set to Faster Time, scroll thorough the 'turns page' and you'll see 6 or 7 views in the LA area that are still the regular quality although the ones around Portland and the one that displays on I-10 toward Phoenix are the new higher quality.

Junction View and Lane Assist improvements

I got my garmin nuvi 765t less then a year and a half ago and in that time, I have noticed that both lane assist and junction view have steadily become more and more frequent with each map update. When I first got my garmin, I rarely saw this feature to the point where I would only see it if I was actually IN a REALLY big city. Lane Assist and JCV were so sporadic that they were far from being useful. But with this latest update installed, I literally have seen lane assist everywhere I go now no matter what, even if I'm not in or near a large city. As for junction view, I'm noticing many people reporting that many junction views being improved to photoreal, and other large cities (like Pheonix and Calgary) now have it when they didn't have it before. Probably by 2013.10, lane assist and junction view will be as consistent and numerous as the speed limit indicators are now.

FYI, my old faithful vintage Nuvi 350 accepted a 4GB Kingston SD card Class 4 with no problem. It is a SDHC card (over 2GB) and the older unit was not supposed to recognize it, but it did just fine.

My 750

Pointer.SD wrote:

My 750 has the (short-lived) 5.1 firmware update and runs well with map 2012.10. Note that firmware 4.90 is now the current latest version. I believe that there are only 2-3 of us here at The Factory that installed and kept the 5.1. My guess is that your 760 will do as well as my 750 with the new map. My 750 was getting low on storage so before trying the 2012.10 map update, I finally did go in and remove the unneeded voice files to free up some room to guarantee that I'd be able to install the full North America.

Go big or else

I've got 16GB on advice through another posting. Seems that the best advice is if you need larger try it. On some units it works and on others it doesn't

Route Preferences changed

Just back from a quick trip to Indianapolis, IN. I installed 2012.1 before we left but didn't have a chance to give it a trial run. It changed my route preferences, Garmella tried to route me across town through downtown Indy instead of taking the direct route to I-70. Routing preference had been changed from "Faster Time" to "Shortest Distance".

Check your personal options after you update to 2012.1. A pretty minor complaint but aggravating none the less.

360 and 2460LMT

Both garmins updated ok in about 1-1/2 hours each. However, the Mydashboard feature on Garmin website isn't finiding the plugged in unit. NOt sure what that's about.

So far ok but speed limit

Updated to the new map 2012.1 and no real problems. Took a trip from Toronto to Baltimore yesterday and all worked fine. One thing though, I like the new speed limit showing up for the 401 and QEW but my unit indicates 63 miles as the speed limit instead of 60 miles. I always drive with the miles as default in Canada so I don't know if the Kilometers are correct and show 100KM as speed limit. Anyone have the same issue?

Correct, only units capable of displaying Lane Assist and Junction View or 3D building view, etc. will display these features. The new 2012.10 map does greatly expand Junction View for those nuvi models that display them. Since your 255W doesn't offer these features, no map update will add them to it. Sorry.

I had exactly the same problem. I have lost junction views at three places that I had it before, what gives Garmin. I buy a unit with lifetime maps and now find that the unit does not have enough memory to do the updates.
