Basecamp search failure (sometimes)

As I was planning a trip to Wellfleet, Ma (Cape Cod) I came across this problem with Basecamp:

I have the latest 2012.30 NA map installed on my computer as well as my nuvi 1450LMT. When using Basecamp the search function fails in some areas. I was able to find my own address in Upstate NY but it doesn't find any street or address in Wellfleet, MA. Mapsource has no problem at all. This has been repeatable. Go to Wellfleet, MA on the map (at least Basecamp can find the city). Input any street or address visible on the map and try to search for it - it will not find it in Wellfleet; the search results find similar street names in other cities 20+ miles away. Whether "Center of Map" or "Near" (in this case Wellfleet, MA) is chosen makes no difference.

This problem may occur with other areas as well, but I haven't tried many others.

I just emailed Garmin support with this report. I guess I will stick with Mapsource until it doesn't work anymore with newer maps.

wellfleet, MA

It found Wellfleet. I tried to search NEAR Wellfleet, MA for a street (Rose Lane) that was visible on the map and it could NOT find it either.

Though it finds my home when I search for it BaseCamp also finds a whole bunch of items that have NO relation what-so-ever to the parameters I placed in the boxes. I haven't understood BaseCamp since the 1st time I opened it. It is a major step backwards into total confusion as far as I am concerned.

I needed help from this site to learn how to search the 1st time in BaseCamp. Seems I misunderstood what I was supposed to be puting in the boxes altogether.

I was heading out on a trip and wanted to make a route. It became so tedious and never came close to what I wanted so I just dropped the whole thing and winged it while on my trip.

We need programs that are straight forward and simple to understand, and yes, programs that work. Not programs where we have to study them to figure out how to use them. We have better things to do. Like going somewhere using our GPS.

I still have it loaded but it is junk IMHO.

I agree

I find it useless for transfering maps, other than a Garmin map, to an SD card. I can't determine what I am selecting. MapSource or Map Install is much better.

Garmin's Reply

Yes, it seems like Basecamp is a dumbed down version of Mapsource with a clunky interface - not really ready for prime time.

I did get a reply from Garmin support. It seems they take these kinds of reports seriously and look into them. Here is the reply:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Thank you for this information I have forwarded on the issue to our software support department for review.

Having worked in software support many years ago we referred to that response as "the black hole." Like the astronomical phenomena, things went in but never came out.

Tried Basecamp again

I tried Basecamp again today. Shut it down and used Mapsourse. Just too much to learn when I know other software that works just fine for me.

Will stay with Mapsource as long as my maps will go in it.
