How to get proximity alerts to work with CSV files??

I have a nuvi 1450. When I ran POI-loader (2.5.4), I had the cemeteries.csv, cemeteries.bmp, and cemeteries.mp3 in the same folder.

It loaded the cemeteries file, but I get no proximity alerts or icons.

Do they publish a POI Files for Dummies? I've read all of the POI FAQs here and it has yet to sink in.

Did you use the manual mode

Did you use the manual mode in POI loader? Did you enter a valid alert distance? Have you driven by a cemetary in the poi at the alert distance, the POI coordinate may not be on the road but far back in the cemetary itself.
Are you zoomed in to the 300ft scale or smaller to see the icon?

change the file name.

You need to add the keyword "Redlight" (without the quotes) to the file name.

redlight cemeteries.csv
redlight cemeteries.bmp
redlight cemeteries.mp3

Be sure to add it to the bmp and mp3 files or POILoader won't load them. You don't need to do anything special with POILoader.

I'm almost positive

I'm almost positive the 1450 DOES NOT support .mp3 sound files.
I believe you must use .wav sound files.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .You will need sox.exe and wav file for alerts.Once set up make sure to run poiloader in manual model and set distance for alert.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

Needs wav file

see https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=63932#specsTab

It does need the .wav file and not .mp3

Actually, POI-loader ran without allowing me the option of ‘Manual’. The only time I’ve seen that option was when I was trying to load a gpx file. I had tried to use Extra POI to convert the cemeteries file to gpx. When I then ran POI-loader with manual settings, POI-loader froze. When I ran POI-loader using the csv file, I was given no options, just a notice that it was done.

Yes, I drove past cemeteries that the map showed extending to the roadway.

I really don’t know how to tell what scale is being viewed. On my GPS76CSx, it was easy. But if the icons don’t appear on normal viewing conditions, they will be useless anyway.

This is the first I’ve heard of this. Can you elaborate? I understood only that the icon and sound have exactly the same name as the poi file.

I did download the wav sound, but when I went to the sox.exe site, the downloads did not work.

I’ve been using Garmin handhelds for almost 20 years. But this has me feeling like a third grader trying to master trig.

Didn't mean to overlook that

Didn't mean to overlook that I'll be reading all of the suggested links.

Thanks to all.

"Redlight"

Mike1951, the keyword Redlight causes the GPS to give an alert about 1/4 mile from the POI location. Just add the word to the .CSV file name and run POILoader.

There are several reserved words that Garmin uses like Speed and Redlight. Do a search here on the site to see exactly which words are reserved and what they do.

sox.exe

Download the sox.exe from this link http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

There is a Manual option.

Mike,
When using POIloader, when you get to the screen where it asks you where your POI file is, that is where you can choose Manual mode.

Where it says "Express" just use the pull down box and change express to manual.

Yes, the file names need to be exactly the same. So you will have to add "redlight" to all three file names.

There is a very clear

There is a very clear explanation of the filename conventions to be used at the following Garmin official site:

http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/creating_custom_po...

Please go through it. And 1450 does not support mp3 files. WAV files can be used.

Sound Files

I'm new to all of this and have been doing a lot of researching to get proximity sound alerts to work on my nuvi 1490 which uses WAV files. I can't seem to get the sox file to work. I learned is needed for my sound to work with POI's. I know it has to be in the program file with the POI launcher where the exe files are yet still no joy sad

Are alerts turned on?

Did you turn alerts on? I believe it is in tools/settings/proximity points.

There are several gotcha points. Let's make sure you have them covered.

First do this exercise
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

Next make sure of your POI folder and naming conventions. See
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721

Let us know.

sox.exe

Make sure to download the sox.exe from here. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 and place it in folder location of poiloader.Note new download of 2.61 moved the location of poiloader.Mine is now located for windows XP in Local Disk(C),program files,Garmin folder then click Poiloader folder and put sox.exe there in the Poiloader folder.

The 1450 uses wav files and not mp3. Make sure you also have sox.exe in the same folder as the poi loader.
