help with a Streetpilot 340c, or upgrade suggestions...

I have two 340c's (myself and my wife)... my brother has two 340c's (HVAC business)... my daughter has a 340c, and my son has a 330c...

all of our maps are probably circa 2008... I understand I cannot delete the map files that come with the units, and that I would need an SD card for new maps...

my brother really needs to have updated maps for his business... he would kind of like traffic capabilities as well... the rest of us hardly use our Garmins except on trips...

I'm seeing the Garmin Nuvi 265W/WT for $80 to $100... I've also seen good prices on the Nuvi 295W as well... should I even bother trying to upgrade the old 340c's, or just look for something new...?

if I was to get an SD card/s for the old units, how much capacity does the SD card need to have for the maps...?

is it correct that I can't purchase one map update and install it on all of the units in our family...?

if we were to look into new units, what are some suggestions...? we do like the Garmins, but we have to go 'cheap' as well (sorry to say)... I like the WiFi capability on some new models, though I don't know if my brother is geeky enough to put that feature to use...

I realize that this thread starter is kind of 'all over the place', but I would really appreciate some direction... in my family, it's kind of up to me to make these decisions...

thanks...

New Garmin or maps

I had the c340 and it done the job but was limited on space for custom pois.Traded mine for the 265WT and have been well satisfied with it.It all depends on what features you want in a newer model. With the prices on some models now it is almost as cheap to buy a newer model then update the maps.

You can't purchase one map and download to more then one unit. They are locked to that unit and can not be transfered.

You may want to review the models and features see https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134 .

If you look in the archives

there is a procedure to put maps on sd card and use them. I had a 330c and upgraded and didn't have enough space for Canada so I put Canada on the sd card and when I went to Canada it worked flawlessly. I sold my 330c and the guy that bought it still uses it as the way I had it set up.

still, a couple questions...

I appreciate the replies... thanks...

I think the Nuvi 265WT would be good for my brother... the traffic feature was knocked in several reviews, but he works in the Philadelphia-Baltimore-Washington corridor which is supposed to have better service than out lying areas... still, many people had little good to say about Garmin's NAVTEQ traffic service...

my question about the 265WT... it says it comes with a 'non powered' mount... can I assume that my brother can still charge the unit while driving...? (maybe a dumb question...)

for myself, I'm leaning toward the Nuvi 295W... I don't care about the traffic and I would use the email/browser function, as well as the bluetooth...

once again, on the old SP 340c's... just to be sure, if I loaded the map updates on a SD card, I wouldn't be able to copy that data to another SD card and use it in my other 340c's...? also, again, what size SD card would I need if I wanted to do this map update...?

thanks again...

That is correct. The map update is tied to the unit so you would need a separate map update for each unit. You can put the maps on the SD card.

I still have my C340......

I still use my C340 as a backup - still runs fine & I have the latest maps on an SD card (my wife has it in her car & it's rarely used).

I bought a 1490T earlier this summer & just LOVE it! I still like the older model, but the larger screen (5 inch) and some of the new features of the 1490T are head & shoulders above the 340 (Lane Assist is slicker than snot!)... & the free traffic feature works pretty well ( Ad supported - the ads only come up when you are stopped & are pretty unobtrusive). It even works with the 340 if necessary (it's in the power cable).

You can find them on sale at most BJ's, Costco & the like - I got mine @ right about $200. Check them out....

Powered mount and SD card

As I'm sure you are aware, there is a power cord that plugs into the mount on the c340 which powers the device. With the 265, the cord plugs directly into the unit instead of the mount. It will still be charged while driving.

As for the card size, I use a 2GB SD card which is more than big enough to hold the maps. I doubt you would be able to copy the file from one unit to another, but try it and see.

Don't forget this note from

Don't forget this note from Garmin support on the 300 series. Note: StreetPilot c300 and i-Series units do not currently support the SDHC (High Capacity) cards.

SD cards...

thanks for the info... I can get two 2G regular SD cards for $12, free shipping... I might have to try them and give it a shot...

I wound up purchasing the Nuvi 1490LMT for my brother... a good unit... I paid $185 total... not bad...

I think I might still want the Nuvi 295W for myself just for the internet access, but it's $109.49 right now... I can wait... I'm not desperate...

thanks again for everybody's help...

should I be ordering SD cards for the 295W and 1490LMT as well...? will they take SDHC cards or do they need Mini's or Micro's...?

sorry, I'm lazy... I should be able to look this stuff up...

***update***

done... I ordered the 2G standard SD cards and two 4G micro SDs for the two new units... now, I'll be fetchin' up some POIs...

I really like my old C330.

I really like my old C330. But it was stolen. So I bought another C340 unit from ebay which has TTS & optional traffic feature. Luckily, I got one free update from Garmin 2011.31 I believe & still latest as of this time. They are great units as charlie said but limited space on Custom POIs. I suggest you save them as back up. Of course I love my 265WT & it's one of the best rating GPS out there for it's price & function. Overall, just wait for a great deal if you are not in a rush. Good luck.
