Next big POI project

I know that we are all very diverse in our interests, and I don't want to sound too eager or anything, but what's the next big POI project? What are people interested in?
Since finishing the Olive Garden project I've been trying to brainstorm and come up with another good project but thus far I'm not getting much inspiration. I was hoping that if we start throwing out some posibilities we could come up with something good.

Next big POI project

I actually am starting a file of all the US based boy scout camps. Going through each state (A-W) I've worked my way to the M's. Of course the number of camps in the rest of the states are in the 100's. Since this is a "spare time" project, with spare time being limited, I hope to complete by the end of Feb.

It's called boondocking and

I have discovered a very interesting turnkey web-site that enables people to upload their boondocking locations into a database that can be downloaded as a gpx or csv file. In case you haven't guessed already, it's located at http://www.boondocking.com . Even if you are only interested in POIs you will want to check it out.

I think you meant .org

Juicarians unite

I think this is a great idea. I normally make my own juice but when I am on the road this is quite difficult. Unfortunately not only do most of these places use centripetal juicers which not only do not produce as much juice as a grind and press but do a very poor job of extracting nutrients. Furthermore some of these actually use organic fruits and vegetables Therefore I suggest some guidelines such as indicating which type of juicer is used, what vegetables and fruits are juiced and whether these are organic. Also, in addition to the chains you mentioned, many Whole Foods, their associates and independents also serve fresh squeezed organic juice. May I suggest that Jamba Juices, Robeks and some others be left out as these chains can already be found in the nav GPS data base and will make the list quite long.

Canada Hockey locations

Anything with hockey in Canada would be nice. Like the hockey hall of fame in Toronto etc. Also, I stay in Windsor Ontario when I go see hockey games in Detroit. Information about Windsor would also be great. Thanks

Working on a Huge Project

Presently working on a huge project which involves POI's for Canadian Provincial Parks for all Provinces in Canada. It's coming along quite well but is slowwwww work. Between fishing and ATV'ing hope to get time to spend on it. At least a little every day or two. Have most of the coords now and am doing some data entry.

Here’s an idea...

How about creating a “TourGuide” section on the website, so those who know how to create them, can create them and those who don’t know how, can learn...

Just my 2¢

I wonder if..

.. would be a good idea to create my Offbeat poi to a tourguide section.

Never did that and if I do, maybe get users that has seen the fun places to send in a photo of it so to put it in with it.

Is that even possible to do? just a thought - might be to much work.

re: Cory's post, I agree, dog parks would be great, I noticed some States are already up. I've just uploaded dog parks of NC, if someone wants to merge this file and the ones for all the rest of the states into one complete list, I'd sure as hell use it! smile

Dog friendly hotels would also be useful!

General Question

When creating/adding to a poi file, If I have the coordinates, but instead of a street address only a po box, or rr #, does anybody know if it would still work if someone searched via name?

Yes it would. You may want to

Yes it would. You may want to go to Google maps and put the name, city and zip in and see if it pulls out a address.

I would strongly advise against using a PO Box for the address field. Why? Because if your coordinates are even a tad bit off then the user won't have any way to find the actual location.

Why not just call the business and ask them for their physical address.

geez..

look how far this thread has come. Hotel chains, olive garden etc. have all been accomplished for the most part. Nice work you guys.

obtaining the addresses

Has anyone come across a way to get large amounts of addresses from a search on Google, WhitePages, ect? WhitePages.com has an API for their site, which maybe someone has made a web page where you could extract the information is a CSV format. I wrote to the United States Post Office and asked them to consider submitting their address information. It is a great marketing tool for any company.

CU Service Centers

I would love to see an all inclusive poi of Credit Union Service Center locations for the US and Canada and also indicating whether it is a VCOM location or a Full Service Center.

opposite of attractions?

Twin engine, tricycle gear, Kelly Johnson, P38, lightening,,,

Would they be called, "quarantines?" A list of places that anyone would avoid might be very popular. You'd have to download info from lots of health districts, but I wouldn't drive down a street that had plague un-necessarily.

I've listened to a report on the spread of bed bugs on NPR. I'd hate to put a good motel out of business by starting a false rumor, but I would also appreciate a way to find bug free motel rooms.

Dog Parks

Hi,

With everyone traveling by car and RV these days, how about a Dog Park POI?
I found this site : http://www.dogparkusa.com but have now idea how to get the data into a POI.

Suggestions/Thoughts?

HISTORICAL MARKERS

My ongoing project is historical markers.
As we drive every so often we see the sign "Historical Marker Ahead" which makes me wonder what it says and do I want to stop.
I found the Historical Marker Database website which has an ongoing collection of markers across the USA which is updated almost daily. http://www.hmdb.org/
I made two gpx files one for eastern states that I visit and other for western. I have two SD cards and insert the one which direction I will be going. It will notify me at 1500 feet and my wife will read what it is.
Each card also has motels, truck stops and rest areas for those states so that I do not have too much data in the Garmin. The database has over 32400 markers for the USA

Muffler Man

All,
Bill Griffith draws the "Zippy the Pinhead" cartoon strip. Zippy talks to advertising statues, often the Muffler Man. Where are the advertising statues? I know of the Lumberjack in Flagstaff, and there was a giant statue in Farmington New Mexico that held a tire...Discount Tire?
Kids would love a GPS app that alerted them to such.
Would Mt. Rushmore SD count? Where exactly is Babe the Blue Ox?
Inflatables don't count.

Be safe, watch for ice on the roads as the season get colder.

Every State has a fairground or 2. I wasn't able to find a definitive list anywhere. This would be a good one if it doesn't already exist somewhere.

hotel chains

yes please yes!!!

Hotels by stars

Maybe instead of hotels by chains, hotels by stars (diamonds). I've got a few chains I like, but when I'm traveling I'm looking for usually 3 or 4 diamond hotels. Unless I'm really desperate, I don't usually do the discount hotels. (Not that I have money to burn, but I've been burned by bad neighborhoods, and some horrible experiences in the hole in the walls).

So, luxury, nice, and bring your own gun lists would be nice. Cross reference the AAA ratings or something. It would allow me filter out tons of them I'm not interested in above or below my preference.

Hotel chains are done

My next POI project? Canada

My next POI project?

Canada Rest Stops. Yes, I know there are some files regarding that on POI Factory already, but they don't cover the entire country.

I mapped out the entire Trans-Canada Highway System, West to East. The aforementioned POI files did make Québec a lot less of a hassle and did provide a small amount of help in Ontario. But for the rest of it, I had to look through 5,000 miles of roads for turnouts, rest areas, and visitor centers. In some instances, I had to do it twice.

Needless to say, a tedious process that could have been made a lot easier if the provinces simply listed the locations on their websites. They don't, and contacting the provincial ministries for information turned out to be useless. So I had to do it the hard way.

It won't be as well done as the Combined Rest Areas file for the US, but given the lack of information from the provincial governments, I think I did ok.

I've submitted it to POI Factory but it hasn't been approved as of yet, so I can't offer a download link. Once approved, I'll set up a discussion thread for it.

Re: I'm creating a list of AAA & CAA offices

dconsolla wrote:

I have a printed directory of all AAA and CAA locations

I just got, from someone inside AAA, a complete list (in a spreadsheet) of all the offices of AAA and CAA. Because they can't provide POIs, there's no coordinates with this data.

The data provided to me does *NOT* include the coordinates of the offices so I sent them through a geocoding website and then BACK into my handy spreadsheet.

So, my entires are geocoded for their locations and contain the full address, including the city & state. They also have the "club number" and the "Office number" and an entry for "Updated" meaning when the data was generated (and sent to me).

I'll upload it shortly as a GPX file.

I second this one

I can definitely vote for this one. I'm in need right now for the Hertz return location for the Montreal Dorval airport (YUL).

If the group thinks this is a worthwhile endeavor, I'm even willing to help with the data collating and publishing. I'm not in a position to actually collect the data as I don't fly and rent cars that often. About once or twice a year when on vacation.

If anyone has the Hertz location for YUL, I would appreciate it. In any case, I'm going to give this some thought, and start a new discussion as to how we can, as a group, create this POI file.
