Next big POI project

I know that we are all very diverse in our interests, and I don't want to sound too eager or anything, but what's the next big POI project? What are people interested in?
Since finishing the Olive Garden project I've been trying to brainstorm and come up with another good project but thus far I'm not getting much inspiration. I was hoping that if we start throwing out some posibilities we could come up with something good.

No great suggestions here

OG was a good one, mostly a nationwide place - reasonable number of locations, and widely eaten at smile those I think are best for projects - something most of us are comfortable with, preferably nationwide, or at least regional. I guess it doesnt have to be food related, but I self admit, thats where most of my POI's are....

While Waiting for the Next Big One

'ryates' would like some help getting a poi on 'Build A Bear Workshops' at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/3164. Maybe we could help him out while waiting for the next Big One.

my 2 cents worth...

I'm far more impressed with city profiles created by locals, giving the hot spots to go, and how to get there easily. I'd like to see stuff done for San Francisco, Chicago, LA., Philly, etc.

I don't see the attraction for knowing where e.g. Home Depot, is located in every state of the country, given that I know the one in my city and that's all I really need to know. Plus the GPS' have a decent file of big places, like restaurants already, so it seems like duplication to me.

Yes, I'll dive into this one tonight.

Yes, I'll dive into this one tonight. I agree a good project.

Just couple of Ideas.

Well I had some ideas, not sure if people had worked on them or not.

1. Cracker Barrel Locations
2. Waffle Houses! (hell that would just be every over pass in the south)
3. Basspro stores
4. Gander Mountain stores
5. Cabela's Stores
6. chevy Dealers
7. Frys electronics (if you have not been in one of their stores, do not go unless you have money in your account as they have lots of neat things)
8. Pet Smart stores
9. Waterfall Data base
10. Off the wall one! Public tours! Corvette Plant, Beer brewries, Jack Daniels, and ect.

You asked these are just a couple of thing that I would would put on a chip.

new poi project

I have one that I believe would be great. It is Dollar Tree , I think everyone would love that but when I go to website They give me only the 5 nearest locations, I have emailed them for a more intense list of locations but no relpy

That's a good idea...

That's a good idea. Which chain should we start on?

Hotrel Chains....

Personally, I would like to see Hiltons, Hampton Inn's and/or Starwood Hotels.

Great idea!

Great idea!

Next Project should go Smoothie

How about Jamba Juice, Robeks, Juice It Up in 1 file so we can find a healthy alternative to fast food?

Double check the alphabetized list.

Cabela's stores were already submitted by lsmonop on Mon, 01/15/2007. Please double check the alphabetized list and maybe even post here that you are working on a project so we don't duplicate our efforts. I have already spent hours researching and find someone else has already submitted.

Really???

So how do I get that when I am on the road? Having it on the site does not make a useful list for finding them on the road.

Obviously, you would use the information on the web site to compile the POI list for Cabela's to load to your GPSr.

Yeah, we really need the big ones, such as Hilton. I normally use Hampton Inns, but insist that it be at some sort of Hilton (so I can get my points).

I'll check into Hilton and see how cooperative their locator is on their website.

Miss Poi, did you ever get that letter hammered out to send to various businesses with regards to creating POI lists for their locations? It was you who was going to do that, right?

we are still hammering out

we are still hammering out how that will work.

I agree, I'd like to see a nationwide list of the Hilton chain hotels (Hilton, Hampton Inn, Doubletree, Hilton Garden Inn, Embassy Suites, Conrad Hotels, Homewood Suites, and Scandic Hotels. I think I got them all)

A lot of business travelers, myself included, use the hilton chain to accumulate HHonors points.

Hotels then maybe....

Cheesecake Factory restaurants; P. F. Changs.

Possibly some mom and pop ice cream shops; clam shacks, mini golf that are off the beaten path. Now that the good weather is coming motorcyclists(and four wheel vehicle drivers) will be looking for fun destinations.

I was just on Hilton's website and it looks like we should be able to pull address by state. Their locator asks for city & state, but if you leave the city field blank it seems to pull up all locations for the state. So it looks like pulling address should be fairly straight foward. Maybe I'll start a thread in the open projects forum for this. (uh, oh...I think I just put myself in charge of another project.) sad

A lot of these are good group projects

I'd be up for helping with Fry's in Northern CA and Pet Smart in Northern CA. Also Petco while we are at it. I think I could cover Dollar Tree in my area, too.

One I'm interested in is Papa Murphy's Pizza. For those of you who don't have one, it is take and bake pizza and is really really good. You never know when you might want to pick one up on the way home wink from wherever.

I like the idea of a lot of people making manageable contributions to larger projects.

I'm going to be gone for the weekend but when I get back I'm ready to roll on it. Just let me know!

campgrounds

Would like to see campground POI's. I know there a million out there in the US. But maybe free campgrounds(if there's any left). Or maybe state park campgrounds. Not including KOA's or private sites. I started to do a little research for CA campgrounds, but stopped while I did L & L BBQs and Hot Springs in CA. I'm trying to find a site that has Lat and Long for campgrounds. I probably will pick up the quest for campgrounds in CA in a few weeks while I catch up on other stuff I've been putting off.

#7 on your list

Hell yah! Frys is a big people toy store. I work there weekends trying to interest customers in TomTom

Hotel chains

Don't most hotels come p0re-loaded?

Since I got my Nuvi last month

I've stayed at 3 hotels. The Residence Inn and the Affinia hotel were not listed and I had to enter them as favorites by hand. The Queen Mary Hotel in Long Beach was listed. So in my experience not all hotels are listed.

DOG PARKS!

I think dog parks throughout the US would be a great one. It would be great for anyone with a dog going on a road trip, or moving across the country. There’s no easer way to give your dog exercise in a short time, well on the road. smile

Next Big POI Project

Sheraton hotels would be nice.

Next Big POI Project?

There are 420 Krystals restaurants.
I emailed the company and asked about
a poi file. They said use the finder
on the site. What do you think?

Dan

I have a couple of requests:

I have a couple of requests: Krystal (www.krystal.com), Macados (www.macados.com), Firehouse Subs (www.firehousesubs.com) and 5 Guys Burgers (www.fiveguys.com)..all in csv and ov2 format... guess now everyone knows where my favorite eating places are at...

Ski areas

How about a POI with the best ski mountains around the country. or maybe a regional list of all ski mountains for each state.

New Ideas

If you are looking for new ideas I would like to make a suggestion.I have done a lot of travel by car. What I do for ideas is go to the bus tours sight and look at the route and stops and from that plan a trip.Done several cross country and Canada trips with great results. One sight I use a lot for ideas is http://www.gosunshinetours.com/.I find most of the tours have a good plan of events and need very little change from their plan.I used a computer to print out the maps and such since at the time I didn't own a GPS and I am now in the learning process.I think if it is ok to use that information on this sight and convert it to POI trips it would be useful to some of the members.Just a suggestion.

I Haven't

seen locations of State Troopers of each State, or Police Stations of each major city. If they are listed, I missed them.

For instance, State Trooper location for Barrow, AK. is (N)71.290560° (W)-156.788610°.

POI Projects

Bank of America branch and ATMs nationwide. A very large project for one. A lot of zip codes. I have spoken to customer service. They refer me to the website. I have done a limited list for the Atlanta area and parts of GA but haven't uploaded it because it is limited. Will if there is interest in a partial list

ideas

Some of the ideas mentioned here are great. so whos going to get started.

Hilton,csv

Just wondering.... Are there problems with the Hilton.csv found under the Lodging category on this site?

NEXT BIG POI PROJECT

I had been thinking about this as well and had started to put together a .csv file for CHOICE HOTELS. This list would include Comfort Suites,Comfort Inns,Quality Inns, Sleep Inns, Clarion, Cambria Suites, and Maistay Suites and Suburban Extended Stay Hotels. I hoped that we could find enough interest in building this file to have several of us build files by State/Province, and contribute to Miss POI for creation into one single nationwide file.
Another thing on my "to do" list is to enlarge the auto dealer files (by state and Province). I was hoping that we could have a file started for all of the major auto manufacturers --- ie: Ford,GM, Chrysler Dealers for starters.
Your comments are welcomed!

Next Big POI?

I'm working on two things and I'm wondering if there is any other interest. Haven't seen this, but I'm assembling a database that capture "all" POI files in MS Access database. Then, with a pop up window, all you have to do is type a key word for POI and then a key word for zip,City or State.. you then would have a custom POI file assebled on the fly for your trip. As an example, maybe you want Starbucks and repair shops in MO.??

The POI I'm working on is a list of attorneys. As a sales rep, this will help me... any other interest?

New Ideas

What about Dance Halls or at least Places to Swing Dance
there are quite a few i don't know how hard it would be to find them but there are some people that travel every weekend to them
i know pittsburgh has a website with a bunch
pghdance.com

Odd sites

I don't live in the US but I believe there are some towns etc. with really odd-ball sights to visit like 'Worlds largest ball of yarn.', 'Crashed car statues', etc.

If I lived over there I think it would be interesting and fun to find all these wacky sights along a route if travelling on a road trip...

tire shop

Is there a POI db for something like 'the tire factory' or 'Tires for Less'?

One Stop Hotel Information

Most of the hotel chains have locator books in the lobbies that you can get information from if you are building a POI database. Of course, some of us uber-geeks could have a hard time dealing with hardcopy information. wink

One of these days I have to start building my own database of motels with truck parking and internet access located in the region I cover.

(Currently sitting in a Super-8 in Shelby, NC)

College motels

Small motels that cater to universities or colleges. Jacksonville State University has "Game Cock Inn", North carolina A&T has "Aggie Inn" just to name a few. When traveling to these cities, or visiting for homecoming, will be great [['

new -poi "Goodwill stores"

I would lonve to find a POI of all the Goodwill stores that are in CA/Nevada. There always fun to rumage around in smile

How about a cave listing...

I travel alot between VA, WV, KY, & TN. I know the area is riddled with Caves, Public and Private. I would love to have a listing of all caves in the area, I usually carry my gear with me wherever I go so stopping for a quick bit of spelunking on a whim would be nice if I have a few hours to kill, Just an Idea....
