1490LMT voices

I just purchased at 1490LMT and got it all updated and whatnot, and so far everything is pretty dope! Only thing is, the voices are bugging the fire out of me. I need something more realistic and less...fake? I had been borrowing my roommates Tomtom, and there was quiet a large bank to chose voices from, and there were pretty good. The 1490 has three I believe. Any ideas where we can get new voices without paying a bunch? Thanks, and great info on here, I'm learning a ton!

1490LMT voices

hawkens85: I also just purchased a 1490LMT and fouind the same thing as you - limited voices. I had Garmin's Web Updater from my previous Quest GPS so I tried it with the new 1490 attached and it downloaded several more - mostly british and australian accents both male and female.

I checked it out oldhorse

I checked it out oldhorse and figured I'd give a walkthrough for those unfamiliar with installing it, took a bit of searching. Download the most recent version of Garmin's Web Updater here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00...

The install is real quick, then start the program and select your GPS(has to be connected), then go select "Proceed to check for additional updates such as voice updates." Select all the applicable updates, and the program automatically installs them.

Thanks for your help!

I recently got the 1490T. I

I recently got the 1490T. I find that the British voices are better than the American, and the male American is more realistic than the female. The British voices do not say "ramp" at exit or entry ramps - they say "slip road" - so if you can put up with that they are not bad. Anything that is available to add from Garmin do not speak street names and even those that were there were cartoon voices. There is software (free) that will let you create your own voice into a Garmin voice file but again - no street names.

Nice sound

The British voices also make a better job of pronouncing the French street names here in Quebec.
Must be the European influence. wink

I think you'll find that many Garmin users "settle" for Karen. known widely as "The GPS Girl". Both my fiancee and I find her voice the most soothing and I have found her pronunciation actually pretty good. She does have some problems with the streets with Spanish names occasionally.

I have never once heard her use a word that isn't common in the US as Robert reports the Brits do on his...
