Favorites Issues

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if there is a place on your computer that is backing up your Garmin when you plug it in through the USB port. I have noticed a few favorites that I have removed keep being restored or duplicated after I am done plugging it in.

Thanks!

.

Favorites are *not* automatically backed up nor restored to/from the PC when you connect.

What you're likely seeing is the restoring of your favorites automatically directly from the nuvi. Look on the nuvi drive in the GPX folder for any files with the .gpx extension and delete them. The file current.gpx is recreated by the nuvi on every power-cycle so deleting this file will be fruitless. Any .gpx files that have the name *other than* current.gpx will be read in on a power-cycle and those favorites contained within the file will be added to your favorites (if they don't already exist).

Favorites file

Not to hijack this thread, but what is the file name of the current favorites? I don't want to loose it and so might make a backup on my computer.

.

The name of your current favorites on the unit is current.gpx in the GPX folder. Simply copy the file to your backup location. When you need to restore your favorites from the file, copy that file back to the GPX folder but rename it to anything but current.gpx...temp.gpx or current1.gpx etc) are all fine, as long as you keep the *.gpx extension intact.

On the next nuvi power-cycle, the favorites will be restored to the unit. To keep the unit from loading the same favorites on every power-cycle, delete or rename the file to something other than *.gpx. *.gpx.disabled will work (or anything else for that matter), as long as the extension is not *.gpx

Thanks!

I had the same problem as the original poster. While on the road, I mark a location that I want to save. However, I do not like to fill up my favorites file. So when I hook up to my pc, I transfer all the favorites and tracks to a mapsource file. From there I can move those new favorites to a file that I call "locals" in my Custom POI folder. I disconnect my Nuvi and delete all favorites. Then I hook up my Nuvi to the PC & transfer the waypoints back to the unit where they are stored as favorites.
